  1. THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH (1963) last night on TBS I think starting at 3am it ran until 4:15am but I conked out at about 3:45... I've seen it before, it's dreadfully dull... yet, I have become interested in the "estate" it was filmed at (fascinating... with a BRICK pool...?)  but most of all I hadn't realized I had been looking at MARIE WINDSOR the first time or two I'd seen this fascinating BORE.

The film has Darryl Hickman as Mercedes younger brother.     This guy appears to have issue with his relatives.    If it isn't a sister-in-law in Leave Her to Heaven its it own sister in Lightning Strikes Twice!

I haven't seen that, though you're right, MERCEDES is good at crazy... her specialty!

I saw most of The VIPs on Margaret Rutherford day. This was retro even in 1963--it's basically Grand Hotel in an airport--but well-made. Terence Rattigan's script construction is old-fashioned and predictable, but he understands how to get the most value out of dramatically familiar situations, like the subplot about the boss who doesn't appreciate the quietly efficient secretary who's in love with him. Of course, having Rod Taylor and Maggie Smith in those roles helps a lot! I found Orson Welles' scenes to be fast-forward material, but otherwise the cast, the views of London Heathrow Airport, and Elizabeth Taylor's fur coat and cap held my attention.

THE V.I.P.s is a dumb movie... was ORSON WELLES in need of a paycheck to play Max Buda...  Yes.  "Max Buda"... yuk yuk .  I think it was a big financial success.  LOUIS JORDAN as Mark Champselle (what was that?  what was that noise...?) goes into the "mod" room nodding his head approvingly..."very nice...very nice..."

This is a film I still haven't seen.

Sometimes I keep missing a classic, waiting for the right time for it to find me.

That hasn't happened yet with THE BIG COUNTRY.

But I am glad others are so enthralled with it. So when I eventually do get around to watching it, I probably won't be disappointed.

Speaking of westerns with soapy themes, I'd say THE FURIES (1950) is one of them. As well as BROKEN LANCE (1954).

THE BIG COUNTRY has great performances in it, but I can't say it's a favorite (though BURL is always a pleasure - particularly as a villain).   THE FURIES is like a Noir Western.  I own the DVD.

  5. I watched much more of THE OMEN last night than I expected to.  I had forgotten how that film is drenched in bad taste.   Unlike THE EXORCIST which is shockingly tasteLESS (it's also masterful)... THE OMEN is only a lame knockoff.

Dave Gilmour is a fine musician,  as well as composer and I find him highly interesting,   but I favor Howe just slightly more (but more so for what he has done in the last 20 years which isn't Prog rock, per se).

Cool.  I only listened to a lot more PINK than YES, but live STEVE HOWE was... stunning.  I've seen a lot of shows, and that was one of the good ones!

All that Prog Rock commentary made me choose this tonight : PINK FLOYD  Meddle

Steve Howe is the prog-rock guitars, I find the most interesting.

I saw YES at the Spectrum in Philadelphia around 1990... all former members participated... two drum sets, two keyboardists...  No DAVE GILMOUR for most interesting Prog Rock guitarist...?
