The TCM board uses UBB code, a sort of knockoff HTML. I'm going to add spaces inside the tags to demonstrate. To post a URL as a link, type [ url ]http://www.tcm.com[ /url ] Removing the spaces in the above tags makes it work. Note that in the example above, the board automatically recognizes that as a url, so you shouldn't have to use the tags for short links. To hide a long url or to fit it into a block of text, do it like this: [ url =http://www.tcm.com]The greatest channel on earth![ /url ] When typed correctly (without spaces), that would appear as the link The greatest channel on earth! A lot of the UBB codes are not supported by this board, such as the quote tag and the img tag (used to embed images).

Ok, so Rashomon didn't do it for you. But that may mean that you're not that big on Japanese movies, or maybe Kurosawa movies, or maybe just that particular movie. All foreign language films are not alike, so don't be too quick to dismiss them all out of hand. I prefer Seven Samurai to Rashomon. The latter feels more like an exercise in storytelling, the former packs a huge emotional wallop. My biggest problem with The Outrage is that I keep waiting for the preacher to yell "KHHAAAAAAAN!!!!"

And a ridiculously small photo of Mr. Zombie. (Any one know his real name?) His real name is Archibald Leach. If TCM is going to the trouble register a new and separate domain name, I expected more. Of course, the first installment is a month away so maybe there will be more added to the site soon. I'm probably just asking for trouble, but I would hope that TCMU fans would come here rather than require a separate message board system. Maybe it could be an added topic under the genre forums. I would love to meet Eli Wallach. What a great actor.

...began effectively enforcing it in 1934, and abandoned it in 1967 in favor of the subsequent MPAA film rating system. The Production Code spelled out what was and was not considered morally acceptable in the production of motion pictures for a public audience. Note that enforcement began in July of 1934. Movies released in the first six months of 1934 are pre-code.

"HOLLYWOODLAND" A nice place to visit!
JonParker replied to spencerl964's topic in General Discussions
Is this a movie that is currently out in the theatres or something? Yes. It's based on the conflicting theories over the death of "Adventures of Superman" star George Reeves. -
The next person to post in this thread is a ****-eater. So there.
-
Birdy, feel free to bring it up with me. It takes me at least a week to get caught up.

You don't alphabetize, JonParker! How can you find a movie when you really, really need it? I hunt for it. I'm at the point where I'm keeping my burned DVDs in boxes under the bed, and VHS on the shelf in my closet.
-
Wow, you have even more DVDs than I do. I also have more than one top shelf, but since one of them is nearly half taken up by all seven seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and all four "Futurama" seasons I thought that the one I chose would be more representative. The other one contains more box sets, including "Kids in the Hall" and the Busby Berkeley set. The Art of Buster Keaton box set is great. I have that one too.
-
Oooh, that sounds good. I don't get FMC. It used to annoy me quite a bit since they were the only station that showed "Call Her Savage" with Clara Bow, but I got a friend to burn a DVD for me.

This was inspired by The Evil Thread . What's on the top shelf of your DVD (or VHS) collection? Rules: No fair rearranging it or leaving things out to make yourself look better. If you have a copy of "Meet the Fockers" or "Dude, Where's My Car," post it. No fair making fun of other people's taste, although discussion about the titles is encouraged -- otherwise this is just a silly list thread. This obviously works better if you're like me and don't bother to organize them in any particular order. Ok, here's mine: Xiu Xiu the Sent Down Girl Badlands M Dr. Strangelove LA Confidential First National Collection (Chaplin) The Wild Wild World of the Batwoman (MST3K) Road to Perdition The Abyss The Man Who Would Be King The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys Sanjuro High and Low Fast Times at Ridgemont High The Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney silent version) From Hell The Omen Seven Samurai A Nightmare on Elm Street The Kid/A Dog's Life Heathers So how about yours?

How did this ridiculous movie become the favorite it was? Even the ending sucked ! ! ! The Graduate hasn't really stood the test of time, mostly because it was about issues that are not so important now. It's very much a movie of the Sixties. That said, I do love the ending, where Ben and Elaine get on the bus and look at each other and realize that not only do they not know each other, but that there's very little that separates them from their parents. It's a powerful ending. Overall i tend to agree with you, though.

Claudette Colbert in "It Happened One Night" wasn't topless, but her camisole was definitely see though. She was topless in "Sign of the Cross." Violence, nudity and swearing do not in and of themselves make a movie good or bad. Sometimes they are necessary, and sometimes they aren't.
-
Anne, I don't disagree with you, but if that happens there's nothing any of us can do. But for the time being I will go on enjoying a nearly perfect channel for what it is, not for what I wish it was.

I think you need to direct that to him. It is obvious he is not presenting a different view, he is being condescending. I don't think he was being condescending at all. I thought it was a well-reasoned post that explained his POV and how he sees TCM very well. I'm in full agreement with everything he said, and he didn't feel the need to call anyone names to do it. There's some sort of weird emotional attachment to the TCM brand going on here that really doesn't bear much relation to reality. It reminds of the sort of cognitive dissonance I'm seeing from Bush supporters lately. We have had TCMProgrammer's assurance that TCM is signing contracts to bring us more and more classic films. 95% of the programming is classic films, and what isn't relates to classic films, such as Dick Cavett's star interviews. Seriously, this whole thing is just weird. There's nothing wrong with a heated debate, but when you let it degenerate into name calling, you lose, and the boards themselves lose. We all lose. Attack the points, not the person.

BRAVO -- used to show better than average shows, usually imports. Then, it was bought by GE and now is in the gutter with AMC. Any channel that can come up with a show like Project Runway is ok with me. Message was edited by: JonParker

Well I'm with you on Busby Berkely. The box set is amazing. And I don't think everything is classic. Let's face it, a lot of the old programmers from the 30s aren't good at all. I think TCM is devoted to promoting film heritage, and I think they do a damned good job. I've been trying to leave Rob Zombie out of this discussion, as it's been done to death.
-
AHAHAHA! That's pretty good.
-
They do show quality programming throughout the day. I think the difference between us is that my view of what constitutes quality programming extends beyond my own personal taste.
-
From my standpoint the good stuff has always been on during the day or in the middle of the night. I want pre-codes, silents, noir, and crime stuff. I'm not at all fond of most musicals, romance films, or other stuff that falls outside my personal interest level. But looking at this week's schedule, there are three movies being shown that were made after 1980, a couple from the 70s and several from the sixties. The bulk of the schedule is movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s. That certainly sounds like classic movies to me.
-
And this affects you because you watch 24/7?
-
All me? No it is not all me. Many others feel the same way I do. TCM is the channel we turn to for the old classics, that is what the C stands for. And you feel like TCM is no longer showing classic movies? Please explain, because I really don't get it.
