  1. That's so great that your son loves the silents! When I was his age a local theatre showed Laurel and Hardy and Keystone Cops movies on Saturdays (this was during the 1960's). The theatre was always packed and we LOVED them. We would watch one after the other every Saturday during the winter.
  2. I was also saddened to hear of Shelley Winters' passing. I'll never forget her fantastic performance in "A Patch of Blue." I think it's rather a shame that the news reports solely associate Shelley Winters with "The Poseidan Adventure" when her career was much more than one picture. I'll also look forward to seeing a tribute to her on TCM.
  3. Hi...I am also new to the message board, and it's great to find so many kindred spirits who love old movies too. I have alot of favorite actors actually. I love Clark Gable and William Powell, and Cary Grant, James Cagney, and George Brent. I love Robert Montgomery's movies from the early 30's. I agree that Vivian Lee is Scarlett and Clark is Rhett. I read GWTW after I saw the movie and Margaret Mitchell's descriptions of her lead characters perfectly match the actors who portrayed them (except Vivian is much more beautiful than Margaret's Scarlet). I especially love the female stars: Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Myrna Loy, Irene Dunn, Jean Harlow, Norma Shearer, and so many more...I could watch their movies over and over again, and do! I also love silent movies...among my favorites are "Greed" with Zasu Pitts and the many Pickford movies.
  4. I think TCM should consider diversifying to, for example, TCM and TCMII, so to speak. Like MTV...TCMII could be movies made before 1960 and TCM, films termed classic to 1980 for instance. Personally, I love movies which were made prior to 1960, preferring the earliest films to 1950. For me a classic is a movie that has stood the test of time...that is timeless in message or is historical in its format. But I also love B movies - just so they're from the right time period. I think when TCM experiments by putting on more "modern" movies and the Japanese anime on Thursday nights, they are jeopardizing the formula that has made them successful. To me, the anime should be on an independent movie-type channel or foreign production channel. Please stick with what has made TCM the best classic movie channel. Keep giving us true time-honored classics by legendary movie stars. This is why I subscribe to TCM. I can watch "Sleepless in Seattle" and other so-called modern classics on many other movie channels for which I don't have to pay extra to access.
  5. I agree with the majority consensus. I've never heard of Miyazaki Anime, and one look at it makes me switch the channel as fast as I can. Subscribers to TCM want to see classic movies by the classic stars we know and love. I cannot judge the work of Miyazaki and don't really know how this qualifies as classic fare, but it is certainly not what I pay extra every month to watch. I also agree that TCM is becoming TCM Lite. Why subscribe to TCM if they're showing something like "Sleepless in Seattle" or Elvis movies? You can see these on so many other channels. I don't care what movies qualify as new classics...I want the old "tried and true" classics and stars like Greta Garbo, Ginger Rogers, Clark Gable, Bette Davis, etc. TCM - please don't deviate from what has made your channel unique and special. Look at what's happened to AMC...it's truly terrible.
