*After the article was published,.Gable married asap at Selznick s behest.*
I know and so did Stanwyck and Taylor (though not at Selznick's request). But as far as I know, Gable's irregular romantic status was not a huge concern in the matter of him playing Rhett, yet one of the main (again, as far as I know) reasons Goddard did not get Scarlett was her unconfirmed marital status with Chaplin. By helping Gable pay off the wife so he could marry Lombard, Selznick was, I think just covering all his bases in case someone protested.
I realize it was just the times and all, but it hurts my feminist heart. It really does.

For Elia Kazan's birthday, here's TOQ on A Streetcar Named Desire :

Yesterday would have been the birthday of Elia Kazan, one of the best directors of the 50's and 60's (well I think so anyway...) Here's a tribute to his body of work:

_argo, when I was young, there was talk of cars that would be motivated by following radio type signals put out by wires implanted in the roads, and all a driver would do is start the car, program in the destination and sit back. By the early 1980's, they tried this type of system in the warehouse of the plant I worked in to move stock around. It didn't work so well_.
I remember this from a Robt Heinlein book. _To Sail Beyond the Sunset_, maybe? Anyway, they referred to cars with "bugs" that would allow the car to drive itself down most highways and would alert you when you got to your exit.

Thanks for the pics of the Cinerama screen. That's not what our theatre had. It was three screens and not rounded like that.

And to Bob Newhart...the theme to the 70's show. Brings back memories...didn;t there used to be a drinking game based on this?

I'm still missing the old swing "Roll Film" intro that used to be the lead in for general movies...
