I agree about Cher. She can act and she does it well. I like Johnny Depp as well. Another modern actor who is good (as long as he's sober) is Robert Downey Jr.

She's kind of an acquired taste, like dark beer or coffee--you either love or hate her. And it is possible to develop a liking for her, with repeated exposure.

Wow. Youre about as imaginative as me! LOL Mine is my first name, last initial and year of birth. In my defense, I will say that I use it for everything so I don;t have to bother with remembering...lazy, that's me!

Listening to Bobby Darin's version of Mack the Knife, followed by Hazy Shade of Winter by the Bangles, These Boots Were Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra and several songs by Green Day. My playlist is a little eclectic today.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think it's Carol Monda. She also narrated the TCM Film Festival:
-
I never really liked Ginger in dramas. I hated Kitty Foyle--too melodramatic and boring. Maybe I missed something, but I don;t see how that performance earned her an Oscar--she was up against Bette Davis in The Letter, Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story (though maybe Hollywood wasn;t ready to forgive Hepburn just yet) and Joan Fontaine in Rebecca. I like Ginger best as a wise-cracking comedienne. She should have gone the Carole Lombard/Jean Arthur route and done screwball and romantic comedies. She was soo good in The Major and the Minor !

Love EEH! He's one of my favorite character actors. No one could do flustered like him. I like him unflustered too--his performance in Holiday as the wise-acre professor, bantering with Cary Grant, Hepburn and Jeanne Dixon is wonderful--funny and sharp.

A Fractured Fairy Tale...
-
And remembered by whom? I'd say most people would at least recognize the names Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino, even if they couldn't give any real details. But Swanson, Pickford, Lloyd, Gish and so forth? Not many people on the street could accurately identify them. Even Jean Harlow would draw a blank for most people--unless they were Madonna or Gwen Stefani fans. (Or they might say, "Harlow? Isn't Nicole Ritchie's baby?")
Bette Davis is remembered, if mostly for "Bette Davis Eyes" (which thrilled her at the time--she was glad to have her name out there in another media) And Joan Crawford will be remembered, sadly, for "Mommie Dearest..."

Oh and I don't know if some of these are out, but Fox precodes, like Now I'll Tell, Broadway Bad and Born to be Bad.

I'd watched Bewitched for years--one of my favorites as a kid (my mom swears I looked just like Tabitha) and later watched Robt Montgomery movies without knowing they were related. I remember reading that her father's name was Robert Montgomery, but I didn;t make the connection. Then, I watched a Bewitched marathon with my sister and not long after watched Private Lives and BING! the light went on, based entirely on the smile and the funny faces they both make.
Sardonic--is that the word I want for Robert? I think so. Possibly.
-
A couple of favorites:
Clara Bow in Call Her Savage

Tallulah!

-
I really like Robert Montgomery! His films in the 30's are wonderful, especially the precodes. He has an edge--not really mean, just enough of a jerk to be interesting. And he doesn't let his female co-stars get away with much typical female nonsense. A sort of modern day Rhett Butler, maybe?
And, has anyone noticed how much Elizabeth Montgomery resembles her dad? Not so much in looks, but her expressions and gestures.

> You all know he also "worked with" Loretta Young, right? He and Loretta have a child, which I only recently found out in watching a Gable bio. According to the child, she said she saw him only once when she was around l5, and he never admitted to her that he was her father. Loretta managed to hide the scandal, and later said she had adopted. However, when you see this woman in her youinger days, you can definitely see both her parents. She was quite beautiful. How sad she couldn't have known Gable. What happened to Gable's son by his fourth wife, who was born after Gable's death? Anyone know?
He's still hanging around. Apparently he did a little acting, but never really made a career of it. No idea what he does for a living--maybe works for his father's estate?

> I went to a kid's show a few years ago -- *Shockheaded Peter*, which has been a great hit around the world. It's based on a children's book and is VERY gory (as fairy tales tend to be). The kids in the audience loved it, the adults were kind of weirded out. One of the characters is the Scissor Man, who cuts off a little boy's thumbs because he disobeys his mother and sucks his thumb as soon as she leaves the house! Here's a version of the song ("Snip Snip"), beloved by kids and eschewed by parents:

> I don't want to get into too much psychology, but I have a few friends who tried to keep their kids from seeing depictions of evil and violence. Those kids are now on anti-depressents. Violence is part of life; we need to exercise discretion, but we can't pretend it doesn't exist.
Oh wow, I've seen those tales before--Der Struwwelpeter stories. Pretty bizarre stuff. But it was Victorian Germany--what can you expect? LOL

> Although now that you mention it, she did almost always play variations on the same kind of character -another reason why I think she's over-rated. People go on and on about what a great actress she was, but she never demonstrated the versatility of, say Bette Davis or even a lesser-known star like Ida Lupino.
I think she tried to expand her range or maybe do projects she felt were "meaningful" when she was younger, and made some really bad choices and nea;ry ruined her career. I think that scared her (so to speak) and when she found a "winning" formula in The Philadelphia Story, she sort of stuck with it for too long a time (haughty, intellectual heiress-type brought down to earth and made human by love or tragedy), then later, her "spinster" roles (Summertime, Rainman and African Queen ) She did vary her roles over the years, though--her character in Song of Love, for example was very different and likeable (though I hated that stupid little bun on top of her head--ugh). And as she aged, she did some very good work. She's devestatingly good in Long Day's Journey into Night and pretty wonderful in The Lion in Winter and Love Among the Ruins.
