  1. I would love to see a day devoted to Deanna Durbin films. I'd love to see Lady on a Train, Christmas Holiday and see her sing "Danny Boy" in Because of Him and the glorious "Nessun Dorma" in His Butler's Sister. And 3 Smart Girls. I've always adored Ms. Durbin's movies and her incredible singing voice. Oh, please, TCM? Do a tribute day to her.

  2. I wonder about her private life, too. Especially if she sang for others. It is sad to read that she was not happy in HollyWood, so much so that she left at age 28 and never came back. I'm so sorry for her unhappiness because her movie persona is so filled with joy and that beautiful voice, that her pain doesn't show to her audience. I truly hope she found peace, love, and happiness later in her life. Deanna Durbin was a rare treasure of HollyWood's Golden Age and everyone who saw her movies, then or now, or watches her sing on YouTube will always love her and will never forget her. Rest In Peace, Deanna Durbin.

I didn't say it was a neglected film. ?:| I just haven't seen it since I was a child and I was looking forward to watching the movie because this is the 100th anniversary of Jim Thorpe's great performances at the 1912 Olympics.

    Peace.

I didn' t say it was a neglected film. ?:| I've just not seen it since I was a child and thought it would be especially interesting on the 100th anniversary of Mr. Thorpe's accomplishments at the 1912 Olympics. So I was looking forward to watching the movie that day.

    Peace.

  5. Thank you for the information! I hadn't seen the promo for the movie rescheduled for Wednesday! :)

I think that a lot of people will find the film interesting, especially since this is the 100th anniversary of the Stockholm Olympics when Jim Thorpe was called "the world's greatest athlete."

    Peace.

  6. I was looking forward to seeing Jim Thorpe, All American on Thursday night. I hadn't seen the movie since I was a child. And I totally understand honoring Ernest Borgnine with a movie night. I'm a fan. But I was all ready to see JPAM in honor of the Olympics and all. I couldn't find anything about when this movie will be shown again on TCM. Does anyone know?

    Peace.

  7. This is such an interesting thread that I thought I'd say something, too (if I'm not butting in?)

Of the two sisters, it's Olivia for me. I think she is one of the best and most beautiful actresses ever on film. I disagree with some posters who thought she "didn't age well" or some such nonsense. All someone needs to do is look at her (46 years old) in "A light in the piazza" or "Hush, hush, sweet Charlotte (48 years old)." She's gorgeous and so stylish (Love her clothes.) Since I mentioned those two films, I'll also say that her range as an actress from the gentle and determined Meg Johnson in ALITP to the kindly, stylish, 2 faced, conniving Cousin Miriam in HHS. I wish she had been "I" in Rebecca because, in spite of her beauty, she could make herself very ordinary and plain.

I didn't know there was a rose named after Ms. Fontaine. Her autobiography, No bed of roses, was very good.

I can't wait for her autobiography to come out. I've read for years (as some of the posters here) that she was writing one. I would NOT read any book that Porter and company wrote about anyone. I checked a book out of the library about Merv Griffin that was written by Darwin Porter and it was nothing but "a fly on the wall" type of sexual stuff. It was awful. If he writes anything about Olivia or Joan, I'd not read it. But that's only my opinion as we say on the internet ;)

I didn't know that they'd made those earlier movies together. I'd love to see those first two films. Maybe TCM will show them some day.

  9.

Ginger Roger's blue feather dress in Top Hat is my absolute favorite movie dress. It's breathtakingly lovely. And, for different reasons, Marilyn's polka dotted halter dress in her opening scene in The Seven Year Itch. My reason for loving the dress so much is that I wish that I could have looked like that just one time in my life. Oh, and that gorgeous red dress that Scarlett wears to Ashley's birthday party near the end of Gone With The Wind.

I wish TCM could do a special about the unforgetable dresses worn in the movies. When you think about it, those dresses were stars, too.

  10. Dear Scarlett,

You've made me feel so much better. I'm sorry about your basement flood, hope all is well. I am beginning to doubt the Kirk Douglas part now (as I recall he was indeed married to Ann Sothern in the movie and no "juice bar was in the scene....) but I seem to remember something about the radio sponsors (the woman) not drinking liquor or something like that? Does this sound familiar? Wonder if Kirk is jokingly making "potassium" cocktails for them?

I know the feeling about that potassium cocktail thing. I remember hearing it in a movie somewhere but WHERE is the question.

I used to have A Letter To Three Wives on tape and I stupidly taped over top of it one mistaken evening. It's one of my all time favorites, too.

Thank you for making me feel wanted :-)

    Peace,

    Kat

  11. Mongo,

I feel so guilty. I read that movie question on another forum and no one could discover which movie it was ( the Kirk Douglas potassium cocktails movie ;-)

so after going crazy trying to find out...I thought I'd post the question here and now I've haunted the nice people here with what in the world is this movie..............

I appreciate the help and suggestions so much. It appears Mr. Douglas may not be the actor at all...... It serves me right for reading the question in the first place............

    Peace to all,

    Kat (Dysthymia)
