Natalie Wood was Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy (1962)
Christopher Plummer was Rudyard Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King (1975)
Robert Redford was Bob Woodward in All the President's Men (1976)
The movie is Inside Daisy Clover (1965).
Next: After 'Uncle' Joe Grandi hides him from advancing enemy forces, Otto Koster tries to protect himself by switching identities with a dead man, only to learn from Captain von Rauffenstein that this means he must now act as an enemy spy.

Hi Terrence, no, I don't believe it is. As far as I know, the film I'm thinking of is the only one where she does die.
Hint: sequel

Ronald Colman was with Beatrice Lillie in Around the World in 80 Days 1956 and with Harpo Marx in The Story of Mankind 1957 next: Lana Turner and Tanya Roberts
Surprising (to me) but correct answer: I was actually thinking of Franklin Pangborn in Exit Smiling (forgetting that Beatrice Lillie was also in Around the World in 80 Days).
This means The Story of Mankind was simultaneously the very last film for Ronald Colman, Franklin Pangborn, and Harpo Marx (unless you count the "lost" film he supposedly made in 1962). What a way to go!

Fausterlitz, can you give us a little hint on this?
Hi Terrence,
sorry I didn't see your message in time, but it looks like CoraSmith's correct answer arrived almost immediately after you asked anyway.
Her answer is probably the most famous of Lee J. Cobb's onscreen deaths. (Onstage, of course, he was famous for playing the title role in Death of a Salesman.) Just for the record, the others are:
The Moon is Down (1943)
Man of the West (1958)
Party Girl (1958) [...he did a lot of dying in 1958]
Green Mansions (1959) [...then he took a decade-long death break]
MacKenna's Gold (1969)
Macho Callahan (1970)
Lawman (1971)

Maggie Smith was in Othello (1965) and Clash of the Titans (1981) with Laurence Olivier, and in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) with Clémence Poésy.
Next: Beatrice Lillie and Harpo Marx
hint: one of the two films involved was the very last film for the linking actor/actress (and unfortunately a famously bad movie)

Keanu Reeves was in River's Edge (1986) and Speed (1994) with Dennis Hopper, and in Much Ado About Nothing (1993) with Emma Thompson.
Another option would be Gary Oldman: he was in Chattahoochee (1989) and True Romance (1993) with Dennis Hopper, and in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) with Emma Thompson.
Next: Ralph Richardson and Joaquin Phoenix

Almost by definition, a series called The Essentials will tend to show movies that many members on these boards are likely to have already seen, perhaps multiple times. And yes, one could perhaps argue that the show creates the illusion of a "special event" by simply re-framing films the channel often shows anyway.
But that doesn't mean the show doesn't still serve a valid purpose within the broader ecosystem of everything the channel broadcasts (which, it's worth noting, has gradually expanded over time to include increasingly arcane repertoire--underground films, foreign films, etc). The Essentials is presumably aimed mainly at less experienced moviegoers who are looking to acquaint themselves more thoroughly with films that might be considered "canonic," and who might also be interested in the accompanying commentary (depending on who's doing it). And at a predictable prime-time slot that they don't have to fish around for or remember. I don't personally watch it that often, but I don't resent the fact that it exists. To do so would be to expect the channel to magically conform to my personal interests 24 hours a day.
I do agree that it might be possible to expand the definition of what is considered "essential" and thus allow some less predictable titles to emerge more frequently. But the Essentials hosts are already, in effect, long-haul guest programmers: their definition of "essential" is already going to be, one hopes, at least somewhat different than yours (as in the Ava DuVernay example mentioned above).

3. Burl Ives was only one year older than his on-screen son, Jack Carson and 16 years older than Paul Newman.
This is interesting, because Pat Hingle (who had originated Jack Carson's role on Broadway) was only 6 months older than Paul Newman--although, like Burl Ives, Hingle could easily pass for a decade older than his true age (as in Splendor in the Grass, as Warren Beatty's father). The brothers' exact age difference isn't specified in the play, although Gooper (sometimes addressed as "Brother Man") is implicitly the older one.

5. Taylor fell ill only a week into shooting--which, ironically, prevented her death: she was too ill to travel with husband Mike Todd to New York for a ceremony honoring him. His plane crashed, killing everyone onboard. (It was nearly a month before she recovered sufficiently enough from this event to resume filming.)

2. In order to comply with the Hays code, the screenplay deliberately obscures the nature of Brick (Paul Newman)'s sexual orientation, to the point where the exact motivations of several main characters becomes unclear. For this and other reasons, and despite the undeniable skill of the actors involved, playwright Tennessee Williams was less than thrilled with the result (reportedly warning those waiting in line, "This movie will set the industry back 50 years. Go home!")
