Rock stars in leading roles? (Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, James Taylor, David Bowie) [although Taylor is more of a folk-influenced singer-songwriter]

Oh, I think you're right! Samuel Hinds is in Stage Door but not as her dad.
No, he actually does play her dad in Stage Door, and I wasn't at all implying that you were wrong--I just didn't remember that it was him. I do remember the character, though (a wealthy guy who's hoping his daughter will actually fail and give up the whole acting thing).
Fwiw, none of these actors looked much like Katharine Hepburn's actual father, Thomas Hepburn:

That's it, Peebs! I didn't realize Hinds and Gwenn had played her father more than once--I actually had different films in mind for the two of them (Little Women and Sylvia Scarlett, respectively). I've seen Stage Door many times, but somehow forgot Hinds was in it.
Nice work, and the ball's in your court. 🙂

I'm not sure about your list. Do they have a role in common?
Hi Peebs, yes: they each acted with another well-known performer, to whom their character bore the same relationship in each film.
I enjoyed your "bed" titles, which must have taken some sleuthing to ferret out! Fortunately, the films in my question are mostly much better-known than those you found. They're also listed in chronological order.
Another example (although in a lesser-known film) would be Leo G. Carroll.
Thus endeth the hints (at least for now)... 🙂

So I guess she dies in two of her films-- HUMORESQUE and I SAW WHAT YOU DID.
She also dies in Queen Bee (unintentional car crash), and in The Story of Esther Costello (intentional, suicidal car crash).
Plus, there's a dream sequence in Sudden Fear where she dies in yet another car crash.
(With our apologies to Miss Wonderly for briefly dragging the thread back to this side topic, we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.)

Vous avez raison, monsieur! As a reward, here's a link to du Maurier's "The Birds":

Thanks, Peebs! I actually read "The Birds" recently, and was surprised at how vastly different it is from the Hitchcock film, which is a very free adaptation of her short story.
Re Jules Furthman, he also co-wrote the screenplay for The Big Sleep (which doesn't seem to have made the plot any easier to follow!) 😉

Elaine May wrote or in some cases, punched up the script?
Yes: wrote the last two, co-wrote the first, and (as you said) was brought in to "punch up" the dialogue in the other two (at which she was apparently extremely adept).
A unique and (I think) criminally under-used talent, Ishtar notwithstanding. Her daughter, Jeannie Berlin (unforgettable in Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret) is also a superb and rarely-seen actress.
Nice job, Peebs, and back to you. 🙂

Thanks, Peebs! I overlooked the Oscar-nominated part, but in his case the odds of that being true of any individual film seem to be about 50-50! (Since Schindler's List, for example, he's scored 37 films and been Oscar-nominated for 21 of those, which is pretty staggering.)
