They all feature aviators as central characters? (The third and fourth films depict real historical figures. The others are loosely based on Amy Johnson, Amelia Earhart, and Ormer Locklear, respectively.)

You got it, C-Man! (Apparently his real name was Skippy, but at least in the Thin Man films he was credited as Asta, since that was his name in the scripts.)

People running (or being chased) through cornfields?

aka: Spartacus π

I was actually waiting for the full answer, but here it is, just for the record: Sayonara: Red Buttons (won AA as Best Supporting Actor) The Diary of Anne Frank: Ed Wynn (nominated as Best Supporting Actor) Save the Tiger: Jack Gilford (nominated as Best Supporting Actor) Harry and Tonto: Art Carney (won AA as Best Actor) Driving Miss Daisy: Dan Aykroyd (nominated as Best Supporting Actor)
-
Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you, Terrence--this list is actually a mixture of winners (2) and nominees (3).
-
Yes, Terrence, nice work! That's more than half the answer. There's also an second commonality about these performances that involves awards. Can you figure out what it is? (btw, the actor in question in Save the Tiger is not Jack Lemmon)
-
Thanks, Broadway! And thanks for joining this thread (it can have a tendency to become ping-pong between only a few players otherwise). π Next: Sayonara (1957) The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) Save the Tiger (1973) Harry and Tonto (1974) Driving Miss Daisy (1989)

Well, other actors were almost cast in lead roles in each film: His Girl Friday: Walter Winchell as George Burns (Harry Cohn's idea, before they hit upon the gender switch concept) The Maltese Falcon: George Raft as Sam Spade (he turned it down, not wanting to work with a first-time director) Ball of Fire: Lucille Ball as Sugarpuss O'Shea (Gary Cooper recommended Stanwyck instead; Ginger Rogers and Carole Lombard had already turned it down) Gilda: Humphrey Bogart as Johnny Farrell (he turned it down, feeling Hayworth would draw all the audience's attention) High Sierra: George Raft as Mad Dog Earle (Bogart talked him out of it, and Raft "didn't want to die at the end" anyway)
-
Lead characters with Irish last names? His Girl Friday: Walter Burns (Cary Grant) The Maltese Falcon: Brigid O'Shaughnessy (Mary Astor) Ball of Fire: "Sugarpuss" O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck) Gilda: Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) High Sierra: Roy Collins (Humphrey Bogart)

Hi Broadway, since this was posted three days ago, it looks like everyone needs a hint (including me)... π
