  1. In addition to having great style sense, you're a terrific photographer.
  2. The Academy has a NY branch and they often show the same programs there a few weeks later.
  3. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences just sent out an announcement about their summer series of films. This year it will be a 9-week "Summer of Silents: Photoplay Award Winners of the Silent Era." Tickets go on sale June 7. The pass for all 9 evenings is only $25. *********************************** Some of the great classics of the silent film era will be returning to the big screen when the Academy presents the films chosen as recipients of the Photoplay Magazine Medal of Honor. With thousands of readers sending in their votes, this award pre-dated the establishment of the Oscars and reflects the films that contemporary audiences of the 1920s thought were the best films of each year. Today these films tell the story of the American film industry?s first true Golden Age, and offer work by some of Hollywood?s most influential directors and performers. The nine evenings will feature the best available prints, music performed and composed by a variety of accompanists specializing in the period, a comedy short featuring a different silent screen comedian each week, and surviving fragments of lost films from the era, introduced by film historians including recent Honorary Award recipient Kevin Brownlow. For silent film buffs and novices alike, this series will provide a unique window into a lost era whose influence is often underappreciated. Check back for updated information on shorts, guests, and other surprises. 6. I am still feeling completely exhausted (and happy) from my four days. My fourth day consisted mostly of panels, talking with people I know, and the party! I look back at the program schedule and think how there were some films I would like to have taken in but that would have meant missing others. Next year, I must makes sure to take two weeks. the first for the festival, and the second to get back my sleep and to catch up on all the work I need to do, LOL! I had a very great pleasure on Sunday evening in the Hollywood Roosevelt lobby. I was waiting to talk with Charlie Tabesh, who was discussing something with Robert O, and before I knew it Robert turned to me and shook my hand, remembering me as a guest programmer from 2009. He was so charming and nice. (By the way, Sunday evening's party was tremendous...and the spirits were very up because of the bin Laden death, the news of which came an hour before the party started.) I have nothing but kudos for TCM and its fantastic staff!!!
  7. Hi, I will be posting today's late tonight. LOL, still exhausted from the film festival and have to get ready for work (groan).
  8. Two things of note for Blu-ray Dumbo will be released on Sept. 20th And there was a New York Times article that mentioned five Marx Bros. movies are coming to Blu-ray: On June 7 the Marx Brothers? campaign to destroy any semblance of sanity of order reaches Blu-ray, as their early comedies ? ?The Cocoanuts,? ?Animal Crackers,? ?Duck Soup,? ?Monkey Business? and ?Horse Feathers? ? are released. And you can?t get them unless you say ?swordfish? (see ?Horse Feathers?). http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/01/movies/summer-dvd-releases.html?pagewanted=2&_r=4

  10. I have been having such a terrific time seeing movies and stars these last few days, I suddenly realized (sadly) that tomorrow, Sunday, is the last day. To those who didn't make this year or last, I must tell you there is nothing like seeing the classics shown on the huge cinema screens. You REALLY must come next year! Tonight, I saw Breakfast at Tiffany's on the enormous Graumann's screen. Believe me, you have NEVER seen Breakfast until you have seen it here. And having Julie Andrews talk with Robert O. about Blake Edwards...what a great treat. Earlier in the day, I saw Carousel, the 55mm version and this film got to me really hard. The first time I ever saw it was when I was a kid and my Dad took me to see it at a second-run theatre. Those memories were still present. And to see the beauty of this print on a great screen, stretchingside to side forever...wow, I was knocked out. And by seeing it so large, I saw something that I never spotted before. The tale is set in the late 1800s, I believe, but there in the background of a shot of a number of sailboats heading out was a speedboat barrelling away. The TCM crew is working so hard. They each deserve a round of applause on Sunday night. They are racing from place to place and they are the most remarkable people I know. I _hope_ they know that. Also caught today Summer Magic with Hayley Mills speaking at the end. And Hoop-La, a brand new print that the rep from MOMA said we were the very first people to see! Yesterday was the maginificent Spartacus with the legendary Kirk Douglas being interviewed by Robert Osborne. And an almost 2-hour interview with Peter O'Toole by Robert Osborne at the Music Box. I think that is the highlight of hghlights. And now to rest for another full day. Thank you, TCM. I think this year's festival is even greater than last year's. I can't wait for the third!!!
  11. Gregory Peck and Tim Holt are on TCM today Edited by: filmlover on Apr 28, 2011 6:40 PM
  12. Friday, April 28th, 1939 This ad is very large, and what you see here is small compared to the original
  13. But it must be said that a DVD playing on a Blu-ray player will look a lot better than on a standard DVD player.
  14. Apr. 27th, 1939 What a week for releases....Stagecoach, Dark Victory, The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, and Zenobia
  15. Kyle, sounds great! I have this week off, so I will be there for that.
