Hello, Dolly coming on Blu-ray April 2nd.
-
She did star on Broadway with "The Boy Friend" costar Tommy Tune in My One and Only. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and she was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, and Tune won for Best Actor.
-
Another Olive title on Blu-ray and DVD:
Magic Town starring James Stewart, Apr. 23

I'm not sure. My first thought was something DIsney since they control the theater...but then I began to wonder about Hondo, since it is in 3D and the El Capitan is set up with it...but I think it is likely to go to the Egyptian. Kismet and South Pacific would be good since the El Capitan has shown musicals and have a great sound system.

Christopher Gable, who plays Twiggy's love interest, had a very nice, natural quality on screen in this film. He had been a ballet star prior to this but took up acting when he developed a rheumatoid condition with his feet. He founded a school for ballet, and later was given the honor of a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to dance in Britiain. He appeared in a number of TV productions, including portraying Jack Buchanan (who co-starred with Fred Astaire in MGM's The Band Wagon) in "Remember Jack Buchanan."

How many watched this Ken Russell tribute to the musicals of stage and early sound films? I saw it when it first came out and still enjoy it. It's fun. Twiggy is actually quite likeable in it. Plus you have cute Barbara Windsor (of the Carry On films), future Broadway star/director Tommy Tune, and a surprise appearance from a famous actress from the early 1970s as Rita, the star who twists her ankle and can't go on (shades of 42nd Street!).

The Big Parade??!!! Funny, I can't think of anyone on the whole board who would show up for that.

I am excited by Max Von Sydow attending!
-
Though that picture looks like a circus is going on, seeing a film at the El Capitan is one of the greatest movie-going experiences there is. The opening of the curtains is worth the price of admission!

Three more titles are coming from Olive Films on *April 23rd*. All will be released on both standard DVD and Blu-Ray.
The Red Pony (1949) - Myrna Loy, Robert Mitchum, Louis Calhern, Shepperd Strudwick, Peter Miles
Santa Fe Stampede (1938) - John Wayne, Ray Corrigan, Max Terhune, June Martel
Wake of the Red Witch (1949) - John Wayne, Gail Russell, Gig Young, Adele Mara

I also recommend the Ellery Queen TV series.
-
And it goes without saying that the Prussian director is Eric Von Stroheim. So, I won't say it.

I think it is just a fictional story of Hollywood, populated by people who resemble real ones, but the real ones were not connected in an real incident like this.

Think "cheap."
-
Harry (Walter Pidgeon) could be any studio head, but mostly Harry Cohn.
And I would equate the English director (Leo G. Carroll) with the woman right behind him as Alfred Hitchcock and Alma Reville.
-
Obviously, Georgia (Lana Turner) is Diana Barrymore.

Sigh, another thread about this.
Maybe you can find an old 4:3 TVand just watch the SD version. 'Course you will probably never want to see any movies after 1953 because widescreen will be so small on it. Or if you like your HDTV but hate the bars on the left and right, duplicate the theater experience...add a towel rack above your screen and slide the towels left and right to suit yourself.

1. ARGO
2. LINCOLN
3. ZERO DARK THIRTY
4. DJANGO UNCHAINED
5. LES MISERABLES
6. SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
7. LIFE OF PI
diana, don't be too put off by some who will not even acknowledge that movies are still being made. I am older but still go to movies. Personally, I think that those who won't watch a current movie are as poor off as the younger audience member who won't see a film that is more than ten years old. Both are missing out...but with younger audiences, they have a natural resistance to anything older. In the case of older people who just refuse to see anything after a certain year, I think they are living in a bubble. I wonder if they ever leave their home or room. and keep the wall clock unplugged. Nostalgia is wonderful, but we still have a wonderful world to live in.
