  1. Brian Maxwell also had this to offer today under upcoming items: (I've skipped the mentions of the *Murnau/Borzage* box set and the *Griffith vol. 2* because they have already been listed here.) "Legend Films will have four releases on October 21st - *Bride of the Monster (1956), Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961), The Devil Bat (1940), and Phantom Planet* (1961). All will be single-disc releases containing both restored B&W and colourized versions. The Milton Caniff Estate through its website (stevecanyondvd.blogspot.com) will be releasing the complete 1958-59 live action Steve Canyon TV series on DVD beginning on November 18th with *The Complete Steve Canyon on TV: Volume One.* It will contain the first 12 episodes in their correct running order with some accompanied by audio commentaries. Some 60-90 days later, Volume Two will be released (the next 12 episodes with some commentaries) and a further 60-90 days after that, Volume Three is planned (the final 10 episodes with some commentaries). Although the first two volumes will have some other extras, the third volume will also contain the bulk of the supplementary content for this endeavor. For the time being, the releases will only be available through the website noted above. Timeless Media will release *Wagon Train - Going West* on October 7th. It will be a three-disc set containing 12 black and white episodes from the popular Wagon Train TV series. These particular episodes star John McIntyre as the wagon boss, with guest appearances by the likes of Leonard Nimoy, Jane Wyatt, Brian Keith, Janice Paige, Dennis Hopper, Eddie Albert, and Dean Jones. Following on November 4th is Wagon Train: The Complete Color Season. This will be a 16-disc set containing the 32 90-minute color episodes from the series' 7th season plus a selection of 16 episodes from the other seasons (all black and white). New interviews with series regulars Robert Fuller and Denny Scott Miller will be included." (I've also not included the info he had on Fo*rgotten Noir and Crime vol. 4* because I posted that a few weeks back.) http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/barriemaxwell/maxwell092408.html
  2. Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) in "Casablanca": "The politics of the world are not my department. I run a TCM Programming Challenge. Lay off politics or get out." We were doing great, folks, eight terrific schedules so far, and then we had a page of jury duty. Time to get this back on track to the schedules. Time is going by...tick tick tick. Midnight PST on September 30th is the deadline for getting the schedules posted. Remember what they sang in "Gypsy": "Your schedules will be swell! They'll be great! Starting here. Starting now. Do it for Mama!"
  3. This is for the Sony S300, which I have. I love this player but I wanted to point out who might be thinking of getting it, it is what they call profile 1.0. It isn't capable of 1.1 profile (which is the picture-in-picture that some newer Blu-ray movie releases have) or 2.0 (which is for connecting to the internet to access certain movie websites or download material). If you would like those features, you might want to get the Sony S350 which came out a few months ago and is currently about $379 (but supposed to come down in price by $100 around the end of September). Personally, I do think the S300 is a great player and this price is wonderful.
  4. I'm putting together an alphabetical list of upcoming classic film releases on DVD & Blu-ray _and_ the dates they were first mentioned here with two hopes in mind: 1. People can go to the date of the post to read up on a title 2. So that a certain poster who will go nameless (okay, you know I mean CelluloidKid), can see at a glance if something has been posted already and he can avoid his duplicate posts. I will periodically update the list and move it to the top so we can stay up to date. I figured I better do it before we get more duplicate info from CK. (I figure the upcoming D.W. Griffith Masterworks vol. 2 set containing "Abraham Lincoln" and others will likely be his next mentions (though the info was posted here back on 9/13.)) ..
  5. CelluloidKid, you're posting old news again. I listed all the features for the Last Emperor Blu-ray release over a month ago, on August 16th.
  6. No, that was in reference to a post I made a few days ago: "We're doing really great. Seven schedules so far and still almost two weeks left. (Of course, I am starting to tap my toe impatiently by now, hlywdkjk and lzcutter, wondering when you are going to get yours in.)
  7. Everybody, there are now 11 days left (including today) to get your schedule posted. (As a sidenote: Tap, tap, tap, Kyle and Lynn.)
  8. Web, LOL, I know I am talking because I can feel my lips moving. We already have a Special Sales of Classic DVDs section here on this board...and have since December of 2006. And I know you know about it because you have contributed to it. LOL, we don't need another in the GD section since everything you could ever want to know about classic DVDs for sale already exists here: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/forum.jspa?forumID=362 People can either use the link above to get to it, or can go to the TCM Forum Home page, then down to Genre Forums, and we are the last one there, the "Classic Film DVD Reviews" section. When you click there, you will find sections on "Upcoming Releases," "Special Sales of Classic Titles on DVD & Blu-ray," plus many threads in which people can posts their own reviews of different genre movies to let others know what to buy or not to.
  9. Hi, Chip, We've had the sale info in the Special Sales of Classic DVDs section of the TCM Classic Films on DVD Forum for awhile now. http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=93301&tstart=0 It's worth everybody clcking on the link and coming in to take a look. The TCM Forum for this keeps up to date on new classic releases, sales, and when we can get them in, reviews from TCM members: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/forum.jspa?forumID=362 filmlover
  10. While Blu will take a little while to gain a massive audiences (this Christmas should be very good), I noticed that in the current issue of Home Media Magazine that the sales for the first week of the new edition of "How the West Was Won" on DVD and Blu-ray, 34.76% of the total sales (over a third) of the title went to Blu-ray. That's encouraging. : )
  11. The "Planet of the Apes" Blu-ray boxset has been mentioned here before, but now it is stated the titles will also be available individually on the same date the set comes out, November 4th.
  12. MattHelm, Glad you felt inspired to do a schedule! I wasn't aware there were silent Boston Blackies, but I want to see them!!! The "Kids Get in Free" reminds me of my youth (except we had to pay) and I would very much like to see "Toby Tyler" again. Some nice days with tributes to authors Faulkner and Fitzgerald, and British actors Finch and Howard. The only way I could see for you make your schedule any better is to take that one Bardot film and program a whole day of her. (Sigh....) And you end with one of my favorite films, "Brief Encounter." Great job!
  13. Word is coming in that the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" will be released on Blu-ray on December 2nd, the same day as the standard DVD 2-disc edition. Extras should be the same as the DVD set: Commentary by Robert Wise and Nicolas Meyer Commentary by Film & Music Historians John Morgan, Steven Smith, William Stromberg & Nick Redman Isolated Score Track The Making of The Day The Earth Stood Still Decoding "Klaatu, Barada, Nikto": Science Fiction as Metaphor A Brief History of Flying Saucers Edmund North: The Man Who Made the Earth Stand Still The Astounding Harry Bates Farewell to the Master: An Audio Presentation of the Original Short Story Fox Movietonews from 1951 - Featuring the Film's Premiere Restoration Comparison Theatrical Trailer Still Galleries http://www.classicflix.com/earth-stood-still-bluray-december-a-349.html?osCsid=018ef7bf27e6ccad9764a9de586bac38
  14. We're doing really great. Seven schedules so far and still almost two weeks left. (Of course, I am starting to tap my toe impatiently by now, hlywdkjk and lzcutter, wondering when you are going to get yours in.) Thanks so far to: movieman1957 kubrickbuff ChipHeartsMovies pancakes_barbara ydobon ILoveRayMilland sugarpuss To all who haven't yet submitted a schedule, you still have until midnight PST on Septemeber 30th to do so. Remember, this is open to all members here on the TCM message board. For information on how to do it, see the very first post in this thread.
  15. CineSage, I looked at the chart earlier and saw that only a handful of seats were in the last row for Connery. I figured they would put him in the biggest theater as he would be the major draw. I forgot to relate my own story of when I saw The Man Who Would Be King in its original run. It was in North Vancouver at some theater I went to with a friend. There was excitement with the peolpe manning the refreshment counter and we found out that Pierre Trudeau was in the audience. He was on a date with Margaret, before they were married. When my friend and I sat down near the front, I looked back and saw him about halfway back. I got a chance to speak to him for a moment after. I think it is amusing that he was at a movie called "The Man Who Would Be King."
  16. Well, the event went on sale today. Did anybody get tickets? The L.A. Times this mornign had a full page advertisement for it and I still think it is so hard to choose just one film that you can go to, because that is all you are able to attend since they all start at the same time. Passing up Sean Connery. Hard. Shirley MacLaine introducing The Apartment. Hard. Dustin Hoffman talking about Tootsie. Okay, excellent movie, but I've seen Hoffman talking on awards shows and I can do without this. Still, to see Hoffman would be interesting. But I went with my initial choice, Cameron Diaz introducing There's Something About Mary. What can I tell you? Sigh.
  17. sugarpuss, it is so funny but I was thinking for the next time around I mighthave Aline MacMahon as my Star of the Month. I get such a kick out of her in those early WB films. Glad to see you got to her first. I'd love to see the 1927 "Chicago." Just when someone thinks there are no more ideas for themes in this world, you come along with an excellent one based on balloons. But, what, no "Around the World in 80 Days"? Gasp! And the "A Salute to Working Girls" would be a great day of programming on TCM. Heck, it would be a great theme of the month. Superb!
  18. ILRM, great schedule. The tweaking you did with the time travel theme was fun. The Dean tribute would be good to see, and I enjoyed the Six Degrees idea. And the family movie day appeals to me, ending with one of my favortites, Bye Bye Birdie. Wonderful work, so glad to see your schedule.
  19. Sorry that I am a few hours late chiming in on the two new schedules, but I had to work very late last night and when I got home I was so tired fell asleep on the couch in a sitting position...all - night - long. Woke up there about 5 AM. Ouch. Just so anxious to head in again in this morning. But, first to the schedules...
  20. sarah, you should also check out the section we have already established here on the TCM Forum, "Special Sales of Classic DVDs & Blu-rays" in the DVD forum here on the TCM board. We list often when there are good items for sale from online sources and in-store specials: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=93301&tstart=0 There is also a section in that forum where we list news about upcoming classic film releases, reviews, etc. http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/forum.jspa?forumID=362 You will find here the general rules about that forum: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=122907&tstart=15
  21. *The Professionals (Blu-ray)* A spiffy little western from Columbia Pictures in 1966 starring Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, and Woody Strode as 4 men hired by Ralph Bellany to rescue his wife (Claudia Cardinale) from bandito Jack Palance, who has kidnapped her. The storyline is good, and has some good characterizations, with several twists thrown in for good measure. Picture quality is terrific, at least 4.5 out of 5 stars, and the sound is excellent. There are three featurettes in standard definition, and each ois interesting, with personal reminicenses from Claudia Cardinale and Conrad Hall, the cinematographer. Definitely worth seeing.
  22. Makes you wonder what were they thinking? I mean, surely, if they are going to do something on a director or two,. as a followup to Ford at Fox, there must be someone better known to appeal to the Christmas buying crowd.
  23. Here's artwork, inside and out, for the new Fox Murnau & Borzage set: http://www.classicflix.com/artwork-added-murnau-borzage-a-347.html?osCsid=af8b56d0d4db53adfebe2b77cf283329 They've also posted details of the individual films, much of which has been reported it here. Much as I love classic films, I still think this is an odd choice to release...for the holidays...at this price...for the general public. John Ford, yes, because he is well known...but this one I have to admit that when you count that it is only about 12 DVDs, about two directors many people have not heard of, films even many film devotees have not heard of (let alone the public), and a $240 price tag...I will be surprised if they sell 100 copies.
  24. ydobon, excellent schedule! I am in favor of any time in Ann Sothern's career, so you have a fan in me. And I'd like to see more Luise Rainer, too. But, gee, "Big City"? Isn't that on too much already? ; ) Nice use of the names of TV series for older movies with no connection. The "Bumbling Thieves" group would definitely be a fun time.
