  1. Things are really getting hot and heavy here tonight with all these schedules. (Unfortunately, it's the only "hot and heavy" I am indulging in this Saturday night.) Keep the schedules coming, everybody. You have until September 30th to get your own in.
  2. pancakes barbara, a superb schedule. "So this is...," Jessica Tandy's 100th birthday, Mary Pickford, the Warren William films (I've always liked him...gad, what does that make me if you think he was a sleaze?), the Wampas Baby Stars of 1929, and so much more. I especially like the way you tied in the "Old Grey Hare" cartoon into your time travel section. Great job!
  3. MattHelm, You sit yourself down and get your schedule in. Wouldn't be a Challenge without you.
  4. ChipHeartsMovies, another excellent schedule from you. The Joan of Arc tribute is great, and something I would definitely watch. I've heard of Veronika Voss but never seen it, so it would be another definite for me. "First Talking Appearances by Silent Film Stars" is a brilliant idea, one that I hope TCM picks up on. And so many other great choices throughout the week (picking Hayley Mills is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon, which is probably when I saw most of her films when I was a kid). Terrific job.
  5. pancakes barbara, you are not required to use a film that has been used in The Essentials before. It can be any film that you think is worthy of being called an essential.
  6. kubrickbuff, Good schedule. One slight thing missing and you can just go into your old message and click on edit to add to it (you don't need to reprint it in a new post, just use the old message to make your change in)...on Monday morning, you've missed putting in a movie for 6AM.
  7. Amazon has a special Buy One Get One sale of packaged DVDs (some containing Cliff Notes with the DVD, some containing a CD of music from that decade). So buy one title, get another title of the same value or less for free. Some classic titles are: with Cliff Notes $9.99 each Moby Dick Inherit the Wind Wuthering Heights (1970) with Decades CD $13.99 each Carrie West Side Story The Graduate Mad Max Guys and Dolls Fiddler on the Roof 12 Angry Men Chitty Chitty Bang Bang When Harry Met Sally Some Like It Hot Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_7439872_1?ie=UTF8&plgroup=1&docId=1000270861&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=right-3&pf_rd_r=1MY652HCAHJ950RY15PA&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=434752501&pf_rd_i=130
  8. I realized I haven't been mentioning any sales of *Blu-ray* high definition titles here but thought I would start doing so _when it comes to older titles_, which is what this forum is about. So to start it off, Amazon has a sale on several WB films that are up to 52% off the normal price: The Shining $14.95 (48% off the regular price) Enter the Dragon $13.95 (52% off) Bullitt $13.95 (52% off) A Clockwork Orange $13.95 (52% off) Every Which Way But Loose $13.95 (52% off) The Gauntlet $13.95 (52% off) The Road Warrior $13.95 (52% off) The Omega Man $14.95 (48% off) http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_7363252_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000254951&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=right-1&pf_rd_r=13Z26H1JX755YY7GYSC6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=435172001&pf_rd_i=193640011 And because Blu-ray is still fairly new and that it is high definition, I thought I would let you be able to cross-reference titles at the following site first so you can see how individual titles are reviewed. (Just because it is high definition doesn't always mean that the studio did a first-rate job of a print.) It is ALWAYS a good idea to look up reviews first: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/reviews_alpha.html

  10. Great schedule, movieman! I am glad you put Death of a Salesman in there. I was about to recommend it to the programmer because TCM should be able to get it since it is Columbia, and I haven't seen it in forever. I like the title for the evening, "Noir Night." That would make a great regular feature for TCM. And seeing Somewhere in Time in your time travel evening makes me smile. I love that movie. Thanks for entering!!!!
  11. Beat me to it, Lynn. I was just going to post it. I thnk it is a mistake to be starting all the films at the same time and just the one night. I mean, how do you choose which one to go to???!!!!! I'd like to see Sean Connery, but I'd also like to see Shirley MacLaine talking about The Apartment...but I guess I am going to go with my heart and see Cameron Diaz.
  12. In addition to Joseph Cotten as Star of the Month, I'm looking forward to Drums. Always like a good Alexander Korda film. And starting at noon on December 7th is a tribute called "The Disney Classics" and it runs each week for about 12 hours each week. Very happy to see Treasure Island, Swiss Family Robinson, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Old Yeller, Pollyanna and The Parent Trap all in one sitting. Yay! And a night called "Based on Rudyard Kipling." Wow, the 10th should be very interesting because they have Frank Miller ("300," "Sin City") as Guest Programmer. He's chosen Naked City, High Noon, The Bishop's Wife, and The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3. Robert Osborne has picked for "Bob's Christmas Eve Picks": The Cheaters, Cluny Brown, Remember the Night, Meet Me in St. Louis, and The Shop Around the Corner. And a birthday tribute to Humphrey Bogart on the 25th (though that was purportedly a myth about him being born on that day). On the 29th is a 5-film tribute,"Ron Howard - 50 Years in Film." Should be interesting. And for New Year's Eve, the three That's Entertainment films, plus the 1950 short, "The MGM Story." It's going to be a great send off for 2008!
  13. It was only temporary, the price of the Godfather set has gone back up to $74.95. Luckily I had placed an order much earlier today at the $61 price.
  14. One I like a lot is "Round and Round Hitler's Grave", with the tune based on "Old Joe Clark". I've heard it used in Norman Corwin's great radio broadcast, "On A Note of Triumph." (By the way, if you would like to listen to what I consider the greatest radio broadcast from the golden age of radio, here is a link to it: http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=4668028&m=4668044 Now I wished I had a bushel Wished I had a peck Wished I had old Hitler With a rope around his neck. Chorus: Hey, round, round Hitler's grave Round, round we go Gonna lay that poor boy down He won't get up no more. Mussolini [Hermann Goering] won't last long Tell you the reason why We're a-gonna salt his beef And hang it up to dry. The German army general staff I guess they missed connection Went a hundred miles a day But in the wrong direction. I'm a-goin' to Berlin To Mister Hitler's town I'm gonna take my forty-four And blow his playhouse down. How Hitler went to Russia In search of Russian oil But the only oil he'll find there Is a pot in which he'll boil. [Hitler said to Goering Here's what he did say I can't understand this Russian snow, It's getting too hot for me.] Now Mister Hitler's traveling mighty fast But he's on a one-way [single] track Started down that Moscow road But now he's coming back. (There are variations on the lyrics.) Message was edited by: filmlover
  15. re the Osborne times... If you have a movie that is exactly 90 or 105 minutes or 120 minutes, you are allowed to schedule it if you want without adding in the Osborne time. I am just trying to suggest that when we watch TCM at night, Robert Osborne is going to talk for a few minutes at the beginning and usually a miunute or two at the end. So that would take a 90 minute movie and make the total time with intro and closing closer to 94 minutes, and so the next movie woul start at 9:45. But I will be nice and say if yo have a 90 minute movie, for example, you can start it at 8 PM and start the second movie at 9:30. HOWEVER, if a movie is 91 minutes or 106 minutes or 121 muinutes, it MUST go into the next quarter hour. No shaving off a minute to make a 91 minute movie fit into a 90 minute slot. 16. You can use any American International film that TCM has shown...but any AI new to TCM will count as a premiere, sorry.
  17. You can definitely add a film to your Silent Sunday Night, TCM Underground, and TCM Imports. I've had two each sometimes. And the four films for Star of the Month, can be five, six, whatever you can fit into the hours from 8:00 pm until 6 AM.
  18. Back on August 14th, I mentioned that "Timeless Media plans a September 23rd release of Lee Marvin's 1957-60 M Squad - The Very Best Of. It's a 14-disc set that contains 100 episodes, all of the show's 117 episodes that Timeless has been able to get a hold of. The company is still trying to find viable copies of the missing 17 episodes and they will be included if possible." Well, it looks like they have found them. Amazon now has it listed for sale as a 15-DVD set (and a bonus CD of The Music from M Squad) with the title of *M Squad - The Complete Series*, and that it contains 117 shows. Streetprice $119.98. The release date will be November 11. The link below has pictures of the cover and the insides. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ECP576/ref=nosim?tag=dvdbeaver-20&link_code=as3&creativeASIN=B001ECP576&creative=373489&camp=211189 The link below has the info on the individual discs and the episodes. Other than the music CD, it doesn't look like there are any extras. http://www.timelessmusic.com/DVDs/msquad.html
  19. I thought it might be interesting to start a thread about film books. I have just started reading the new book, "You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story", which ties in to the upcoming five-part documentary. It is quite big (definitely a coffee-table book), and is filled with several hundred photos. Since it is written by Richard Schikel and George Perry, I am certain it will be very fact-filled, not like some film books you come across. One thing I find kind of sad is that for the golden age of movies, they had such great photographers who turned out such incredible shots. But when you get to the later part of the book, so many of the shots from films of the last few decades are so lacking in any kind of quality. It used to be such an art form.
  20. I thought that might be a possibility, too, but the boxes don't have the half English/half French wording. All English.
  21. Sigh. Why do I try? Why do I even bother to try?
  22. This is something I just posted in the DVD forum section but thought it worthwhile enough to let others know because of how scarce this title was and possibly still is: I am over at Costco this afternoon, looking at the new releases and I see the new Fox Film Noirs, Moontide and Road House, at $8.49 each. So I take them off the shelf, and I notice they have a few other recent titles from the Fox noirs...but then what do I see behind them? *Boomerang !!!!!* My eyes bugged out. And at $8.49. They had several copies of this Dana Andrews classic film. And yet, is it really available anywhere else??? All the stories of being held up for U.S. distribution! I've just looked and deepdiscount.com shows they are selling it for $10.49 but they don't have any in stock. Classicflix wants $49.95. Click on the Boomerang pic in DVDplanet.com at $9.95 and it says it is no longer available. DVDEmpire.com doesn't have it all. Amazon...nothing. Just a heads up for those who may want to grab this. the item # is 334149. I doubt you can get it from them online, probably only availble in the stores.
