  1. According to homemediamagazine.com: "Fox...is a flagship sponsor of Silver Screen Selects, a traveling film festival targeting baby boomers who enjoy classic movies. The weekly screenings in such locations as Key West, Fla., and Santa Fe, N.M., will feature Fox films from the recently released Bonneville to the Tyrone Power Matinee Idol and Alice Faye collections." Anybody know of any other locations?
  2. LOL, sorry, Edgecliff, you did get it right that Film Fatale was the one to post the info, but I am the one on the boards who is gung-ho about Blu-ray. Sorry about the confusion. Christmas will be a good time to get a player (or even the Thanksgiving sales) because the new models will be out from a number of manufactures with either 1.1 profile or 2.0, and the prices will be down a buit by then. As for the prices of Blu vs. DVD, they always will be higher because of the work involved, I would guess, on making a title high def (cleaning, etc.). But sometimes, LOL, I have found the Blu price to be less than the standard DVD. For example, the new release of Mad Men Season 1...Amazon has the standard DVD set at $31.99, while they have the Blu set at $31.95. I think a lot of pricing is based on studios. I don't understand how a new single standard DVD movie can still be released at $25-$30 after so many years of when they told us that prices would come way down. Well, actually, I do understand...greed.
  3. Actually, Edgecliff, I am the one who is gung-ho on Blu-ray. After you have seen high-def done right, like on The Searchers, it is hard to go back to standard DVD, By the way, I still collect DVDs (and have just gotten in the Popeye vol. 2, Carmen Miranda, and a bunch of others), but maybe you didn't know that you can play your DVDs on the Blu-ray player and it upconverts tehm to near high-def. I have the Sony S300 and the upconversion of DVDs looks better than on a standard DVD upconverter player. Sony is releasing their newest Blu model in about a week, the S350, for about $399 (will be cheaper on Amazon and other places, I am sure) and it will have profile 1.1 (picture in picture) for Blu discs that have that feature. It will also be 2.0 ready (just needs a free download of a update when it comes available) which will allow access to internet features. (Personally, I don't care about the internet capabilities, but a great many discs will be sporting extra features for 2.0 come this winter). Getting this is really a no-lose situation. You will be ready for Blu and you can play your DVDs on it, too.
  4. Donna, thanks for the link. A great bunch of titles in the new set. I think it's terrific we are getting this one, the Popeye vol. 3 and the Three Stooges vol. 3 coming out, all with WWII items. Unfortunately, I don't see Bugs Bunny **** the ****. I wonder if they are going to continue stopping this one from being released due to the stereotypes? per digitalbits.com: Disc One (Looney Tunes All Stars) - Hare Trigger, To Duck... or Not to Duck, Birth of a Notion, My Little Duckaroo, Crowing Pains, Raw! 5. *Batman the Movie (1966) on Blu-ray high def* I never realized how very funny the writing was for the 1966 movie. I remember it being very camp (a stigma that movies about comic book heroes had to endure for some time), but having watched it again last night for the first time in many a year, I found myself laughing at a lot of its outrageous gags (one of my favorites was when they report they are just passing the Benedict Arnold Monument?like someone in America would build a monument to Arnold, LOL). The picture quality for the Blu-ray high def release is excellent, with vibrant colors and the audio is good. There are a number of extras that fill out the disc. There are two commentaries, one by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, Jr., and the other with Adam West and Burt Ward. There is a short featurette with George Barris, creator of the Batmobile. An interactive map of locations can be played while watching the movie, and while the map spotlights can jump from Santa Barbara (for the wharf where Batman runs with the bomb) to the studio in Culver City where interiors were shot there is an option to pull up ?factoids,? photos, and map directions to the locations. There are featurettes on the heroes and the villains, and more. All in all, an excellent Blu-ray disc to purchase?when the price comes down, because it has a hefty street price of $39.98 (though Amazon has it as $26.95).
  6. Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, and The Final Countdown have all been set for release on Blu-ray in October.
  7. ff, is there any explanation for this being the final cartoon set? There are still hundreds of cartoons to go, I believe
  8. CelluloidKid, question for you: Since it is an Amazon.com exclusive, why would you depend on info from other sources. Why didn't you just go to Amazon? So, no, you didn't do your research. And, also, as mentioned, the item had alread been posted two weeks ago, something you should have checked on before posting yet another info release on the title. You've come barging into this forum, as you do with others, and pay no attention to anything anyone says. You post piece after piece containing lots of puff pieces and repeated information, taking up pages after pages. I've asked on several occasions for you to respect the formats of the DVD forum, which you continously ignore. I've tried to help you but I can see it is useless. I waited to see if you would straighten up but I see now I now have no choice but to contact the web administrator.
  9. Good news. We have already been informed by Warner Bros. that we can expect gift sets of Casablanca, JFK, and A Christmas Story, among others before the end of the year. Now, according to Home Media Magazine, WB says that there will be a total of 25 gift sets released in the final four months of the year, priced from $40 to $200. Some are the titles above, some are recent films such as Batman Begins, some will be for TV series such as "The Flintstones," Peanuts holidays specials, Batman the Animated Series, Get Smart, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E....but that still leaves a bunch more titles to be announced. Cross your fingers for more classics. http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom365581NLK/#/20
  10. CelluloidKid, you are AGAIN reporting old information...and giving wrong info while you are it. Film Fatale reported the info about Kiss of the Spider Woman back on June 25th...and the release date is July 22, not October 21. 1. Search before posting, you have been told this MANY times. 2. Make sure your data is correct. You are nearing the end.
  11. *CELLULOID KID, I HAVE TRIED TO BE NICE...* Not only do you repost things that have already been posted..."Metropolis" was already posted here by film fatale...I posted the Robin Hood info a page back...now you are copying your own posts, for you already listed the Godfather contest a page back!!!!! I will ask again, politely, *one last time,* please check previous posts before you list an item. The "Search" feature works very well! If you ignore this and continue the way you have, I will contact TCM to get you banned completely from the DVD news and reviews areas. Doing so may also affect you from being able to post in the regular forums. Think about it.
  12. VCI has a 50% off all DVDs sale from July 4th-7th. Use code DHGURU. http://www.vcientertainment.com/
  13. Yes http://www.amazon.com/Collection-Washington-Hollywood-Cavalcade-Broadcast/dp/B0018RKEQ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1215105482&sr=8-1 I think it has been discussed several weeks ago.
  14. I noticed that the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood will have Celeste Holm in person for a pair of her films, The Tender Trap and All About Eve (a newly restored print), starting at 7:30. http://www.americancinematheque.com/archive1999/2008/Egyptian/specialevent_JULY_ET2008.htm#YANKEE%20DOODLE%20DANDY
  15. I got an email notification that the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood will be showing Yankee Doodle Dandy tonight, with an in person appearance of Joan Leslie. http://www.americancinematheque.com/archive1999/2008/Egyptian/specialevent_JULY_ET2008.htm#YANKEE%20DOODLE%20DANDY
  16. film fatale, that news about "Metropolis" is incredible. You should start a thread about it in the General Discussions forum because it is very important news to film fans like us.
  17. shearer, the synopsis they provided for The Lodger was for the Fox version with Laird Cregar, not the Hitch version. Not sure yet I will get this because I have the Criterion box set with several of the titles.
  18. Warners has just announced the Blu-ray version of "The Adventures of Robin Hood" to be released August 26th. 19. Me, too. My choice will be the Blu-ray set, but if they just have the standard DVD set being the only one with all the extras, I guess I will be getting both because it is my favorite movie. And, like you, I have previous versions, too. They saw me coming.
  20. Just to close up the thread now that the most recent Challenge is over, I am a bit late but per my usual duty as the creator of faux Now Playing covers for the Challenges schedules here are the ones for the four schedule entries: for lzcutter's schedule: for pancakes barbara's schedule: for moviebuffer12's schedule: for my schedule: I will see you all in September when I will be the host of the next Programming Challenge.
  21. LOL, thanks for providing a laugh today. It's Nelson Eddy, not Nelson Riddle. Nelson Riddle was a bandleader. And the movie you are thinking of is "Rose Marie."
  22. markfp, also give The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz a watch.
  23. REALLY NICE two-page ad spread in Home Media Magazine about How the West Was Won DVD and Blu-ray release that we are all looking forward to, plus the Flynn Westerns and another Western box from WB: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom852646MNJ/index.php If you don't get directly to the page with the link, go to page 4.
