You will have to forgive CineSage Jr. He loves the sound of his own opinions, wrong as they can be. (You'll notice he has to create a pun that he thinks is funny for every post he does.)

Kyle,
I enjoy Michael Dunn in pretty much everything, but I have to say the best villain on TV was Julie Newmar as Catwoman on "Batman." Villainous, sexy, caught between good and evil, slinky, seductive, and did I mention "sexy"? Julie Newmar. Sigh.

*Patton (Blu-ray high definition)*
If you have been hearing that the Blu-ray high-definition edition of "Patton" is spectacular, the reviews are right on the money. The clarity of the Blu-ray edition is truly incredible. I saw it in the theaters when it first came out and owned a DVD edition of it at one time, but never has it looked this great.
When you first play the movie, you get the introduction by Francis Ford Coppola that preceded the standard DVD edition, and they have used the SD version of it here. Then it gets into the movie itself and from the moment you see in HD the immense American flag and then Scott making his speech, you are a goner. Incredible story wedded to an incredible print.
This a 2-disc set. The first is the Blu-ray movie (plus an audio commentary by FFC). The second disc is the same as the second DVD in the standard 2-DVD set, and contains in SD the following special features:
History Through the Lens: Patton - A Rebel Revisited documentary
Patton's Ghost Corps documentary
The Making of Patton documentary
Production Still Gallery accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith's score
Behind the Scenes Still Gallery accompanied by an audio essay on the historical Patton

People keep thanking me, but not at the right time, LOL. In this case your thanks are to edgecliff, not me. And a few posts down, edgecliff thanked me but it should be to film fatale.

Hi, film fatale, a thread on this was started a few weeks back:
-
Kino has just announced they will be doing "Metropolis" on Blu-ray in 2009. Should be incredible.

Well, I saw "West Side Story" on Wednesday night at the Arclight, and I must admit I was very disappointed with the AFI's "new print". The print itself started with hiss noise during the overture, and the audio didn't sound stereo separated at all. The Arclight has a great sound system but the print seemed like all its audio was being crammed into the speakers of an old recordplayer, deep sound but smashed-up audio. The picture quality was far from great. Everyone in the cast, including the Jets, looked like they were covered in darker tan than a season of "Dancing with the Stars."
On the plus side, it was still fun to watch the talents involved.
The Arclight is going to have another one of their "2 tickets for 1" if you redeem 100 points from your Arclight membership this coming week with the next in the series on Wednesday, "Birdman of Alcatraz." That is like getting a ticket for $5 each.
July looks to be interesting. They will have An American in Paris, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, A Star is Born (1954), Sabrina, and Rebel Without A Cause.

A quick reminder that the deepdiscount.com (and probably dvdplanet.com) 20% off their discounted prices sale is scheduled to end on Sunday, the 22nd. They only hold this sale twice a year and the next one wont be until November or December.

Rat Pack Ultimate Collection

Hi, everyone,
Thanks to all for your congratulations. I think everyone pulled out all the stops this time to produce amazing schedules. I could feel the heat and knew I had to really try harder than ever.
Frank, the winners of the past Challenges (hence winners) have been:
1st: lzcutter
2nd: hlywdkjk
3rd: MattHelm
4th: filmlover
5th: allieharding
6th: sugarpuss
7th: hlywdkjk
8th: lzcutter
9th: Fedya
10th: filmlover
If memory serves me right, lzcutter actually won three of the Challenges but gave the honor to the runner up on her second win)(I don't remember whom, so everybody is a champ).
And we must NEVER forget the person who started the Challenge in the first place...path40a. We are all winners because we have had the chance to create special schedules that the TCM programmer has looked at it and even borrowed some ideas to use in the TCM lineups (nothing is more exciting than that).

I'm shocked...shocked...to find there is voting going on in here!
Actually, I *really* am shocked to find out I won! Unbelievable. I thought sure Lynn had it going away.
Thank you again to Lynn, mongo, and FrankGrimes, and also to the two unknowns who voted for me, your votes really meant a lot. And thanks, Fedya, for running this current Challenge.
That said, I hereby declare the next Challenge to start in September after we all get the summer and vacations and ice cream out of our system.
Happy Summer, everybody!
P.S. -- I've created the four faux Now Playing covers, but due to problems with AOL uploading they won't be posted at this time. Sorry. Will do it once I get this figured out.
-
While we wait for the tally, I want to say thanks to lzcutter and FrankGrimes (and, again, mongo) for their votes. It's great knowing you appreciated the schedule.
Another Challenge done. I may get the faux covers in here today for each of the schedules..

I was checking ot the weekend's flyer for Best Buy and for coming on Tuesday they show a picture of the Popeye the Sailor DVD collection for $24.99 with the words underneath it:
Volume 2, 31 Episodes
Volume 1...$9.99
Well, unfortunately, the ad's a total screwup. For starters, they don't picture vol. 2's cover. Instead, they show a steelbook edition of vol. 1. However, don't be fooled into thinking you will get this one for the vol. 1 $9.99 price. No, sirree. A check on the website shows the "Vol. 1" they are talking about (and not correctly identified or pictured) is "Popeye & Friends," a small collection of the TV series's cartoons.
Don't you love Best Buy?

Word is Fox will be releasing all five of the original Planet of the Apes movies as a set on Blu-ray in November. A book will also be in with the set.
(Also, a little more recent, but with a retro look to the films, L.A. Confidential and Kill Bill 1 & 2 supposedly will be released in September on Blu.)
-
No, it's in #13, which is still a good size screen. I think they keep the Dome for the big current hits now. (I think the audience for Indiana Jones will be bigger than WSS and bring in more money.)
-
I am sure the AFI series is here somewhere in these threads, but I wanted to post something I got in an email from the Arclight today about the Wednesday night AFI screening of a new print of West Side Story. If you are an Arclight member, you accumulate points every time you see a movie. Normally 200 points gets you a free movie (so I make that out to be worth about $14).
Well, today the email said for this film, "ArcLight members...can redeem 100 points and purchase 2-tickets-for-the-price-of-1!" So, 100 points would be about worth about $7, so getting two tickets means you are seeing the movie about $3.50 each).(but remember you can't buy the tickets for that, you only get the ticket by redeeming the points. If you want to really BUY a ticket, it will cost you about $14, probably.)
That's for the Arclight in Hollywood. If you are nearer the Arclight in Sherman Oaks, they will be showing Shampoo and you can use this deal there.
This special also applies to seeing Iron Man (wow!) in either theater.

mongo,
Many, many thanks for your vote. Because I was so close to deadline (and exhausted after getting in so many decades of Paramount history), I didn't get to add in Popeye cartoons I love. For you, though, I would assign you as guest to the guest programmer and fill in your favorites. (I'd love to include the Ali Baba, Sinbad, and Aladdin cartoons, plus the one where Popeye and Bluto go to Rio.).(The second DVD volume comes out on Tuesday. Yay!)

It's occured to me that the reason there may not be more votes is that the general community here isn't aware they are allowed to vote.
_Per Fedya's notes in the first post, here is the only eligibility to vote:_
*Voting is open to anybody who was a member of the TCM boards as of May 1, 2008, as well as to anybody who submitted a schedule.* To vote, state your vote for the one schedule you most prefer here.
So, in the words of John Adams in "1776": "Now, VOTE, damn you!"
Voting closes on the 14th.

I thought I better rescue this from page 3...because nobody will vote if they can't find it. Voting closes in a few days.

Celluloid Kid's Upcoming DVD Thread
in Classic Film DVD Reviews
Posted
I think it is time I spoke up about this thread and issues raised. I thoguth I better do so since I was the one who got this whole DVD forum created by TCM.
First, I disagree with this thread being created because it is antagonizing towards one member. It is true that Celluloid Kid posts a lot of material, sometimes redundant, in the "Upcoming Releases" section, but at least he is posting it there where "Upcoming Releases" information belongs. And no matter the genre (horror, action, etc.), if it is upcoming it belongs in the "Upcoming Releases" thread. It should not be in the Horror thread or the Action Thread.
*The individual genre threads* (horror, action, etc.) are meant just for *reviews only* of DVDs you have seen.
Second, I did create a separate thread that asked Celluloid Kid to post his items within already established threads based on the topic (Upcoming Releases, etc.) for one reason: the section was carefully laid out and created to highlight DVD reviews by anyone who wants to post one. However, suddenly he was posting a lot of individual news topics that were getting placed in separate threads when they could have been placed under their topics. When the Upcoming Releases news (for example)is placed altogether in its own thread, it stops dozens of individual threads from messing up the order of this special forum. Also, with all the new in one thread, it is easier to find the info, rather than scouring through page after page of different threads trying to find one item. (Ever try to find something back you read a week ago in the General Discussions forum and you go through page after page of threads trying to find it?)
So, in a nutshell:
1. I am against this "Celluloid Kid's Upcoming DVD Threadthread" being created
because it is mean and petty.
2. Upcoming release info in any genre belongs in the "Upcoming Releases" thread.
3. I am strongly opposed to a whole lot of topic threads being created when they would fit in one of the established threads. As I said, I was the one who was instrumental in getting this whole DVD forum established and I would like to keep it organized.
