  1. Thanks, lz and Kyle.

What would be interesting is if anyone who feels there are more recent films now to go ahead and do their own statistical checking, and post here the results. lol, it will probably end it with the one answer there is no fighting, "Well, it still seems like there are more now."

  2. While looking up films of Busby Berkeley on the TCM database, I came across this in the Milestones section of his Bio. I never knew this about Berkeley's life around 1937:

"Was involved in a fatal three-car automobile accident; charged with second degree murder in the deaths of three people as well as with driving under the influence; lawyers made plea to jury playing up his care of his then 80-year-old mother; cleared of all charges after three trials."

  3. According to the TCM article written about Garden of the Moon, it says,

"Before the picture could even get into production, it suffered a setback when the original leading lady, Bette Davis, decided she'd rather go on suspension. After landing one of her best roles ever, as the temperamental Southern belle in Jezebel (1938), the studio had offered her two lesser films in a row, Comet Over Broadway, in which she would have played an actress who gives up her career to care for her jailbird husband, and Garden of the Moon. The former was never made."

Apparently, this was after that famous law case you are referring to.

  4. At 7:15 AM EST, Dirigible, a 1931 Frank Capra film is being shown. I've never seen this and am looking forward to it.

At 9:30 PM EST, a seldom-seen Busby Berkeley movie, Garden of the Moon (1938) will be on. This was his last musical at Warner Bros. It should be interesting, even if not up to his previous greats, because notoriety surrounds this film. It was the film that Bette Davis decided to go on suspension for rather than make it, and Dick Powell likewise decided he didn't want to be in it (his part went to John Payne).

  5. Every once in a while, I remember to click on the black and brown icon saying "beta search database" near the top left area on the website's front page and head on into the TCM archives. It is interesting to see statistics that they've amassed.

    For example, did you know:

    1. that the most requested film not on DVD is "Green Mansions" (3,102 votes)?

    2. Marie Dressler is #1 in top 10 people searches?

    3. that only 3.58% (5,117) of the titles in the database are on video? (Please note before anyone asks TCM to show more of the 142,896 titles in the database, these are not owned by TCM to show; it is only a historical database.)

    4. that a breakdown by decade shows 1990-1999 has the most titles in the database, followed by 1980-1989, and, surprisingly, 1900-1909 coming in third?

    5. and that there are 1,109,069 "performers" listed in the database (though I suspect some people may be listed more than once based on their occupation or name changes)?

    It's worth exploring:

  6. It's almost 40 years old now.

One thing that stuns me from time to time is realizing how old a film really is, and then, regretfully, lol, realizing that I am not young anymore, either.

For example, Star Wars came out 30 years ago. Thirty Years!!!

The two beach movies that TCM showed on January 1st, Bikini Beach and Beach Blanket Bingo, are 43 and 42 years old!

And did Tootsie and E.T. really come out 25 years ago?

Where did all those years go?

  7. I saw the 3D version during a recent 3D festival. I was not overly impressed because it really wasn't needing 3D and what was in there was so minor. Also, the print they had was worn and seeing all that graininess in 3D is not wonderful, believe me. I had a chance to see the 3D Kiss Me Kate, which would have been more fun to see in 3D, but other things came up.

  8. I'd like to see a grid/statistical breakdown of primetime viewing by year now v. one, three, or five years ago...

otterhere, your post reminded me of something I posted a long way back, in February of 2006. I had to look it up and, not surprisingly, it is still good:

    ***********************

"I'm looking at the proof that the END is not only near, IT IS HERE!!!! I was just looking through Now Playing for the month and I counted eleven movies from the 1970s (including Airport again!), 5 from the 1980s and 1 from 1994!!! And I did a count, 22 movies are repeated within the month! And Bringing Up Baby is on again??!!! I am totally aghast. The way they are going, TCM won?t survive one more month and ---

Oh, wait. Oops, sorry?I just noticed I was looking at the wrong issue of Now Playing. This one is from October 2000.

I hope the point is made. "The end is here" that I mention in the header is one where I hope the predictions and carping of TCM?s impending demise by naysayers will end. TCM is doing the same great programming job they did 5 ? years ago."

    ***************************

Now I can change that to read that TCM is doing the same great programming job they did 6 1/4 years ago.

  9. I think TCM should adopt a 30 year policy for all films they air.

However, that would mean classics like Cinema Paradiso (1988) would not be able to play for about another 11 years or so. And you don't find it playing elsewhere, so people would miss out on a modern classic. In setting a 30-year fix on the year shown, which would be currently 1977, it would mean losing out on seeing a number of excellent films.

  10. Hi, cinema,

It might be a good idea to put this kind of thing under the thread "Upcoming Releases" or "Box Sets", instead of by itself.

When I started the Classic Films DVD Reviews threads, I tried to break them down into organized headings, just so we can easily go to whatever interests us. (Take a look through the threads and you will see what I mean.)

I mention this because I feel if we have general announcements like this in one of the categories mentioned, it makes it easier to find them all under one heading. If we get too many threads started that are just placed in by themselves, the categories sorting gets lost and other things harder to find (just take a look at the many threads in General Discussions and see how many thousands there are that nobody sees because they are hundreds of pages back).

    Thanks,

    filmlover

  11. Boy, this person sounds like a troll. The person's first post and they pick one film, Quiller Memorandum, to say TCM is selling out because it was pan and scan. Never mind that Now Playing, as Sam Therapy stated below, did not list it as letterbox. Never mind that the TCM schedule on this site doesn't list it as letterbox. Never mind that this film and its p&s has been the subject of several recent threads on this board.

And let's take a look at TCM's airing of it yesterday. Prior to it, TCM aired two films, Shoes of a Fisherman and Bridge on the River Kwai, almost 6 hours of letterboxing . After it aired, TCM showed My Favorite Year, Goodbye Mr. Chips, West Side Story, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, AND at the time of his writing his post Tom Thumb was on the air, EVERY ONE of which was in LETTERBOX, that's almost ten more hours of letterboxing. And two more films in letterbox followed that. I find it hard to believe that this poster did not even turn on TCM at some point to check anything before writing.

  12. klaatu, thanks for the breakdowns. And if a good balanced view is what kmd wants, then do the extra months but February, as noted by many others, kmd, including the TCM programmer, is the special Oscar month so it is not a typical month and should not be counted.

  13. mrsl, from the wording of your post, some people might think that FMC is the only thing they would get for $15 extra a month, especially when you mention you would rather get a pay channel which carries about 5 or 6 channels. Actually, for the $15 extra, upgrading to America 180 you get 60 extra channels, including the 6 Encore movie channels, Lifetime Movie Network, FMC, The Movie Channel (West) and TMC Xtra West.

  14. Hi, moira,

I thought about posting about the Bat Masterson series, too, to let people know, since I figured at least the Gene Barry angle would be of interest but never got to do so. I recorded most of then during the last day because I enjoyed the show when I was a kid. For some reason, I remember a different opening for the show than the one shown. Interesting to see Broderick Crawford in one of the shows.

  15. At least my screenname reflects who I am.

As far as bradtexasranger, he is not my "toadie" and I have nothing to do with what he posts or PMs. As a matter of fact, if you actually read my post, you will see that I mentioned in this thread that I thought it would be better treating you civilly, rather than carrying on the fight between you two that has gone on across the boards.
