> "Last I looked, this was still America and constarkel > and I and anyone else can still complain about TCM or > complain about the complainers or boast about Why Me? > or blather on about any damned thing they please." > Yes we can. If we didn't this place would be boring, > and after all mongo likes variety. > > Filmlover if it upsets you so much when one of > us complains about something that TCM does (usually > having to do with showing something other than > classic movies) you should stay out of that thread > and read the birthday thread where you can learn it > is Ashton Kutcher's or Mary Kate and Ashley's > birthdays. I see your point, sweetbabykmd. You're allowed to complain about everything but I am not allowed to present the positive side of what I think TCM does without you calling us sheep. Got it. And how can you "complain about the complainers," that's what I am doing, lol. You know what it is funny? Because many of us like a number of the things the TCM programmer does, you or the others will end up saying one of us is really the TCM programmer in disguise. You can believe me when I say I am not. The proof is: he has much, MUCH more patience with extremely negative naysayers than I do. I've tried to display patience, as noted in a post below, by acknowledging when you or one of the other brings up something interesting, even if you have insulted me in another thread, but patience is not without limit.

Mongo, Thanks for the post, and you touched on something I also meant to discuss when you wrote..."With all the knowledge that these film buffs must have garnered from watching the pre-codes, you'd think that they would begin some constructive threads, and enlighten us, instead..." I have read some of their posts in other threads and they have at times shared some interesting bits about films and filmmaking, which seems a far cry from the person who complains. When they post some good knowledge that I get something from, I try to acknowedge it there and distance myself from the other thread in which they just attacked me on some point, because I believe we all have some interesting common grounds and I try to find it in them. I am sure I've acknowledged sweetbabykmd on something on one thread even though she called me that "baglapper" in another. By the way, you will have to ask her what it means, because I don't know, either, lol. And, yes, Happy Easter to all. filmlover

TCM Programming Challenge Voting

Matt, That would be a great graphic! LOL! Then for the challenge after that we could have a graphic of the woman from the Attack of the 50 ft Woman. Well, Lynn, whatever challenge you come up with is going to be fun, I know that, and I am looking forward to it so much. (lol, but waiting for May 1st is almost like a drug..."The first one is free..." LOL!) filmlover -
Gad, I love finding good wit. I'm still looking. However, you and stoneyburke do manage to do a good bit of baiting. I couldn't help but notice the game the other day in the Dick Cavett thread in your posts back and forth to each other attacking any person who had positive things to say about TCM in the forum. Certainly you were not addressing what someone had written, just making sure everyone was reading what you could have said in private emails to each other. Oh, sure, it was meant to get someone sucked into a fight but I decided to not bother since it was a wasted effort. Used to be you complained mainly about recent movies being shown on TCM. And when others presented facts that TCM had not really changed from several years ago, you ignored those statistics and chose to complain about anyone who disagreed with you. And suddenly it became an open lambasting in your threads to each other on how the rest are "sheep" or, what was that classic from the other day, "lapbaggers". Now I'm being called a message board censor because I express what others probably feel like saying in three words when they see your multiple complaints..."oh, shut up." I came into this board some months ago because it was a healthy forum to discuss the love of movies. And that is still what I hope it will be. Message was edited by: filmlover

Ah, good, here come the rest of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. It was funny how you and constarkel said the other day in a different thread that "Yeah I know, you can't just take on one of the Stepford Wives, you got to take on all of them every single time. Not a lot of individuality in that group." Likewise, I'm sure. How many times have I seen someone else (or even me) say something about TCM and then have your little group of toughs jump in and start pummeling as a group. And it's hilarious that you would use the Joseph McCarthy name on me when I was thinking just a little while ago about the same of you. But you notice constarkel still didn't deny one of those charges about complaining no matter what the situation. And I know I am addressing you as the person who wrote in another thread that your whole reason for being is to complain. LOL!
-
but you didn't refute any of it.

Bravo, markfp2!!!! You are absolutely right and I know from posts I've read that the TCM programmer has informed constarkel that they can't do anything at the last minute when the distributor tells them wrong about the letterboxing. But constarkel likes to complain. If TCM shows a film in pan and scan, constarkel complains. If TCM were to pull it when TCM discovers the problem, constarkel complains about the pull not being announced well in advance. If TCM shows something else and it has been on recently, constarkel complains. If TCM shows something great in its place, constarkel complains about the original listed film not being shown. If TCM shows something not very good in its place, constarkel complains. Oh, and then constarkel calls the rest of us sheep for allowing it to happen and the TCM programmer a lover of panandscan. You can count me in. -
I had done some hunting for a really good video of "Who's On First" last year and I checked out Naughty Nineties. While the routine was good, the audience that was in the film itself was silent and didn't laugh. As someone just mentioned, there was an occasional bit of laughter heard from the director or crew but you really have to listen for it. I found that absence of laughter made the thing not as good as I would have liked. However, I did find that they did the long routine on one of the Abbott & Costello TV shows, and the laughter flowed. I thnk it the superior of the the two. I think the name of the episode was "Old Actors Home" and it is on video. Message was edited by: filmlover

Ouch. Bad joke. I wouldn't stick my neck out on that one.

The Hallmark Channel would be a good place for them (it is still around, isn't it?). And, believe me, when I say that TCM should not run them am I in any way disparaging them. I agree a lot are terrific. I remember well things like "The Execution of Private Slovik" starring Martin Sheen and "Johnny Belinda" starring Rosanna Arquette, but TCM really is about running theatrical movies. I don't recall "Duel" ever running on TCM. If it did, it would be because, though it was done for TV here, it had a theatrical release in Europe. Television specials about the history of movies and interviews with celebrities of the Golden Age of movies are appropriate for TCM, but a made-for-television film is an entirely different animal and not what people want on TCM.
-
I see that there are a few copies of this TV-movie for sale on eBay and one is closing tonight (Friday) after 9PM PST. TCM airs only theatrical movies. To do otherwise goes against what TCM is about. Even though it has two great stars, it would be wrong to air it. Message was edited by: filmlover

> You're not intruding at all. Filmlover and I didn't > mean to hog the thread. :-) You are definitely welcome to play. I have not been able to get to the trivia as much as I would like because of being so crazy at work these last few weeks, so I feel less guilty if someone else can jump in.

I believe it was a silent but I think they added sound to it to compete in the sound market.

Sorry, have been swamped with work and didn't see your invitation two hours ago to try one, but I guess I'm too late now. Guess I'll have to wait until I solve one again. Message was edited by: filmlover

WGA announces "Casablanca" greatest screenplay ever
filmlover replied to filmlover's topic in General Discussions
> That helps explain it, thanks moviegeek. And, btw, I > really wasn't screaming at you, as my pal filmlover > may have implied. Hopefully, everyone knows I was kidding about that. : ) > Plus, any list that causes ANYONE to go and find a > great classic film to watch, B&W or otherwise, can't > be all bad, right? That's actually an excellent point. When AFI came out with the first 100 list (greatest films, I think), there is a woman at work who made a point of catching the ones she hadn't seen. And you're right, the lists never are right unless they are our own. A friend and I used to battle constantly whenever "Nashville" came up. I hated it with a passion and he thought it was the greatest film ever. Message was edited by: filmlover -

I love civilized fighting, lol. Scream at each other, but end it "with all due respect." With due respect to each because I love your posts. Message was edited by: filmlover -
Hi, Kyle, It's one of my favorite movies and one of my favorite quotes.

Which set excites you most for 2006?
filmlover replied to shearerchic04's topic in General Discussions
They all look good, but I think three sets I will like the most will be the John Wayne-John Ford collection, the John Ford collection, and the Gable Signature set. I also am hoping they come out with another collection of Looney Tunes. Message was edited by: filmlover -
It's an interesting mixed group of films. I particularly like the early James Cagney and William Powell films. Should be a lot to see.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek when I was wailing regretfully about having unleashed a "monster" that had been slumbering quite nicely lately. And I am sure you know where I am coming from with that statement. "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." Admiral Yamamoto, "Tora Tora Tora".

Kyle, if anything, it made my workday go faster, lol.
