  1. In addition to the previously mentioned The Red House coming out on Blu from Film Chest Media, they also have another public domain film coming out, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, on May 29th. I don't hold out much hope for the quality of either.

  2. Watching "The Snake Pit," I am reminded how much I like Leo Genn's work. He brings a lot of class to the parts he plays. My favorite of his films is "Quo Vadis" in which he is able to insult Nero with wit without Nero knowing he has been insulted or manipulated.

  3. Edgecliff, I'd read about them but held off mentioning them for the time being since they were French releases.

But since we're discussing foreign releases, here is some more Blu news:

A UK distribution firm called Channel 4 is releasing the James Ivory film, *A Room With A View* on June 4th. An American release is out of print and is now selling for more than $50. Uncertain if the new release will be region free.

The German branch of Warner Bros. will be releasing Hitchcock's *Stranger On A Train* for May 11th. No U.S. release announced yet.

    For American release:

Paramount has announced the *Complete Indiana Jones Collection*, featuring all 4 movies in the series. Release date will be in the Fall.

Walmart will have an exclusive release (at least, at first) of *The Poseidon Adventure* on April 3rd.

And, lastly, I cannot recall is it has been mentioned here but there is a restored release of Frank Capra's *Lady For A Day*, which has several minutes added that was missing from the last DVD release, coming out on DVD and on Blu-ray on March 20th. The Blu was rated excellent in a recent review on Blu-ray.com.

  4.

I was looking around Amazon and came across a couple of excellent deals of "4 Movie Marathon" sets issued by Universal. You can do a search on Amazon and see various collections they have. Some run about $9.99 but I found two that are excellent for their money:

4 Movie Marathon: Classic Western Collection (Albuquerue/Whispering Smith/Duel At Silver Creek/War Arrow) $5.99

    http://www.amazon.com/Movie-Marathon-Collection-Albuquerque-Whispering/dp/B004GSVX8A/ref=sr_1_3?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1330751981&sr=1-3

4 Movie Marathion: Classic War Collection (Wake Island/To Hell and Back/Battle Hymn/Gray Lady Down) $5.49

The prices go up and down but they are generally returning to the above. Worth getting.

  5. Why don't you check it yourself when you get it back and go through my instructions and see if you can play the audio. If you can, then maybe tell him how you did it, since you yourself will have viewed it.

By the way, he is specidfically talking about the audio, isn't he? I know the German Blu I played has the opening titles (you know, title, cast and crew) in German, and, of course, those cannot be changed over to English. And I am wondering since the American release came from the German Blu release, is he is referring to the opening titles that he can't get changed to English, not the audio? You might ask him that.

  6. These are Fox releases.

Where did you get the info about Barbarian being part of TT?

As to One-Eyed Jacks, I have no idea what else to tell you. When he goes to the Blu menu, does he have SETUP on there? If so, it should have the audio possibilities.

  7. Walmart is going to have an exclusive on a pair of upcoming John Wayne Blu-rays, *The Big Trail* and *The Barbarian and the Geisha*. Barbarian will be a combo pack (Blu/DVD), uncertain at this moment if Big Trail will be. Also unknown at this moment is if The Big Trail will feature both the widescreen and the 35mm versions. These will released May 8th.

  8. I, for one, don't want to know all the surprises ahead of time. I like to show up and be stunned to see something added to the screening I wasn't anticipating. I can understand some do want to be able to plan every film they intend to see (and with so many theaters, one does have to work it out like clockwork at times) before they fly out, but there is great joy in finding out a film is going to be shown or someone is going to attend that you didn't know about. One thing I really like doing each year is sitting down with friends in the Roosevelt lobby, or hanging out at the nearby In 'n Out, with each of us going through the program book's events and discussing with the others what films we plan to see.

Plus, the bane of festival programming is that much as a star can guarantee they will show up, they may change their mind and cancel, or have something else they need to do, or be kept away by Mother Nature (Luise Rainer barely got the last plane out from England when Iceland's volcanic ash was causing air flight nightmares). You don't want to come all the way especially for a certain star and then get here and find they won't be there. Or sometimes a film disributor can't deliver as promised.

Each year, the Festival goes through changes and additions right up until the last film is shown on the Sunday night. And each year, people leave on Monday morning very happy.

Hence, despite recent posts to the contrary notwithstanding, TCM is not routinely converting wide screen formats to 4:3 for showing in their SD channel. Thus, as far as I am concerned, there is no reason not to view all movies in SD, thus giving up viewing a very few genuine-HD movies in the so-called HD channel.

So why would anyone in his/her right mind want to view an *identical* picture in this much smaller size? Don't tell me that it is because the picture is sharper in this smaller size :-).

Obviously, you misunderstood what I was saying. I was not saying that TCM was converting widescreen into 4:3. I would never say that.

I was saying that if you have the TCM SD channel and a 16:9 screen, and there is a widescreen movie playing, the picture width is that equalling approximately a 4:3 screen, except on the HDTV 16:0 screen there is going to be black bars on the top & bottom AND on the sides.

For example, here is The Nun's Story from the TCM SD channel on a 16x9 screen. Notice black on top, bottom, AND the sides WITHIN the picture area of the TV.

(Yes, one could use the zoom button on his remote or TV to articifially make it big enough to reach the edges but the picture will suffer.)

But on the TCM HD channel, the picture automatically stretches from side to side, with no need to artificially stretch it. And the picture quality is better.

(The black areas in this picture are the TV;s own frame, not inside the picture.)

So, you can see the TCM HD channel is better.
