  1. This is a special day for ol' filmlover. It may have been why I was yanked from my time travel in 1939 right to 1955 without getting home to 2012. It was on this day in 1955 that I was born. And it seems like the newspaper for that day must have known how much of a film lover filmlover would be because there are a LOT of ads and articles today:

  2. > {quote:title=doctorxx wrote:}{quote}My choice would be The Lone Ranger. Interestingly the actor playing the role was the only Hollywood actor to die in active service in WW2- Lee Powell. I am sure most fans would choose Flash Gordon. The female lead, Jean Rogers, made many a young boys eyes pop!

Unfortunately, you have given away the ending to the serial, since several characters were suspected of being the Ranger in that first LR serial.

  3. > {quote:title=fredbaetz wrote:}{quote}Have to agree with cody on this one. But following closely is "The Adventures of Captain Marvel" and "The Phantom". Both starring the great Tom Tyler.

    > "Captain Marvel" was the first comic book hero to hit the big screen and it's a dilly. Tyler is fine as the Captain.. It was a fun piece of film making. One scene that blew my mind was the Captain is fighting the baddies and he jumps into their machine gun nest and they start running away. Does he run after then? NO. He picks up the machine gun and shoots then in the back as they are taking off..

    > Not as good as "Captain Marvel" is "The Phantom" again with Tom Tyler. These two along with Flash and Dale are considered the best of the movie serials and I agree...

Fred, I believe you are corrct that "The Adventures of Captain Marvel" was the first serial based on a comic book character, but they were preceded by many a comic strip character. Flash Gordon being one, obviously, but also there were Radio Patrol, Tailspin Tommy, Adventures of Red Ryder, Tim Tyler's Luck, Ace Drummond, Mandrake the Magician, Dick Tracy, Secret Agent X-9, Terry and the Pirates, and Tarzan in several incarnations.

While I can agree that Captain Marvel is one of the best, I have to ask for your source that "The Phantom" is considered the same. Your post is the first I have ever read in my decades of loving serials where anyone has ever ranked it among the best. I would have to rank Spy Smasher, Zorro's Fighting Legion, Drums of Fu Manchu, Mysterious Dr. Satan, Daredevils of the Red Circle, Secret Service in Darkest Africa, Manhuunt of Mystery Island, The Masked Marvel, and The Crimson Ghost way above The Phantom.

  5. > {quote:title=ziggyelman wrote:}{quote}Clearly no one here has seen Daredevils of the Red Circle! ;)

I have, and while it is a great serial, I have a fondness for The Masked Marvel. Though he is given no credit, stuntman Tom Steele was behind the mask whenever The Masked Marvel was seen onscreen, plus he played a crook role in a chapter (and thanks to the magic of film editing, chased himself up a staircase).

    6830765543_cc40d0a403.jpg

P.S. -- Did you all know that the stars in serials at Republic were hired if they resembled the studio's stuntmen, not the other way around?

  6. > {quote:title=joefilmone wrote:}{quote}Yes filmlover I was responding to the original post. But I don't think one should rush out and get every single new blu ray when the original dvd was just fine.

I agree. That's why I usually read reviews that compare them when they can. The best side-by-side image comparison (and also for reviews of DVD-only titles) is dvdbeaver.com, in my opinion:

    http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/new.htm

Also good for Blu reviews (and other information) are:

    http://www.blu-ray.com/

    http://www.highdefdigest.com/

Often, though, I do end up getting the Blu version and selling the DVD.

  7. I am guessing you meant that reply to the original poster, not me, since I have been a Blu supporter on this board for 5 years now. And just to correct your statement, 99.9% of the time, the Blu is a far superior picture and audio.

  8. > {quote:title=TikiSoo wrote:}{quote}I was just in Best Buy yesterday and saw two 3D TVs set up for comparison. I took a look at both....meh. It sort of looks like a "pop-up book" effect-flat images standing on different planes. I think viewing 3D movies might be tiring after awhile.

There are two versions of 3DTVs right now. One uses an "active" version and the other is a "passive" version. When I first saw 3DTVs in store, it was always the active version, which require you to have slightly-heavy, battery-operated glasses. It has a shutter system where one eye of the glasses is dark while the other shows through, then vice versa. I find them to be a pain, literally. One is the weight, and after a few minutes I get a headache or feel dizzy after. Not for me.

I had shown no interest after those experiences until I was in Costco a few months ago and they were demonstrating an LG brand passive 3D TV. Passive uses glasses like you see in some theaters, that weigh about the same as a pair of sunglasses and look basically the same. I put them on...and I was knocked out by the 3D. It was a demo disc of Under the Sea, I think. There was one fish that "came out of the screen" so far that I did what people do in theaters do when it is excellent 3D, and that is I tried reaching for it. And I also felt no dizziness or headaches after several minutes of watching.

I am sold on the passive version and hope to get one someday. And the glasses only cost about 4 for $10 (though they already have 4 free ones witht he HDTV, so it is doubtful you would ever need more). Active ones cost about $50-$100 each, and that is just for one.

  9. Hi, Valentine,

While it is true an Oppo still costs $400+, it should be pointed out that most excellent Blu players sell for less than $100 now. You don't want to scare those away who think that Blu players are still several hundred. And you can even get some that are 3D ready if you ever get a 3DTV for aout $130-175.

My personal recommendation are Sony players.

  10. Interesting premise, Kyle, and just to get it back on track, here are a few I would believe would be additions to a regular schedule in 2032:

  11. > {quote:title=kriegerg69 wrote:}{quote} Blu-ray has three times the resolution (and colors look much better also), and it can also (usually) contains a superior sound format as well.

Actually, it is up to 6 times the resolution.

To the OP, you might want to check out the DVD/Blu-ray section we have on this message board:

    [f-362]

As to classicstarlets assertion "blu ray is also known as blu crap, to those who don't care for blu ray,and there are many who don't care for blu ray at all"...that sounds like sour grapes. It's not known as blu crap to the millions of Blu-ray owners. Actually, it really sounds like the opinion of someone who is just sore that Blu may replace DVD and that little classic is released on DVD any longer (but you can't blame Blu for that; classic film DVD sales were dying before Blu came along.

I bet some said that DVD was known as "DVD crap" to people who had invested in their VHS collection.

btw, blu is a billion dollar industry.

Blu does give a superior picture to DVD (but that always depends on the original print it is coming from).

Here are some comparison shots done by dvdbeaver.com from Zulu. Unfortunately, due to space limitations on the TCM message boatds, you are unable to enjoy the finer details available in a larger image.

    DVD:

Blu also comes with the capability of doing a lot more things than DVD as far as extras go.

  12. Theorizing that one could time travel within the twentieth century, filmlover stepped into the Quantum Time Tunnel DeLorean Accelerator and vanished. He woke to find himself trapped in 1939 for a year, seeing newspaper movie ads and articles, and driven by an unknown force to report history as it happened for the TCM Message Board. And so filmlover finds himself leaping from time to time, hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.

To all who can see this...I left 1939 and thought I would be coming back to 2012, but woke up here in 1955. Oh...boy.

  13. Check your user's manual. Some Blu players won't play all DVD-R and DVD+R material. Blus and DVDs, yes..but DVD-Rs, maybe.

As far as loading time, yes, you have to remember that a Blu contains so much more info that it is, in essence, a BD-ROM.

One thing I bet you didn't know - and you will like this - is that unlike DVDs, Blu-ray discs have a coating on them which makes it very difficult to scratch them. If you have a lot of fingerprints on them, take a soft cloth (no liquid or spray should be used), give it a rub and your Blu looks like new.

    Welcome to Blu-ray.

btw, here is a good link to find good tech info or to ask questions:

  14. Hi, gagman,

Been out all day and just got in. My Wings Blu arrived today and I just did a quick test, and it works perfectly. I won't have a chance to play any documentaries or the film until about Tuesday.

Now, mateo is correct, when I said take the disc you have it to make sure it is okay, that's what I meant, that by telling them you are "interested" in a TV, they can play it for you. You are not going to buy a TV, you are just saying you are interested, though you are not really. (When they test it, and if it works, be sure you don't day, "How come it doesn't work on my player?" because that would be a dead giveaway.

Okay, don't give up on Blu. It's the best thing to have. The problem is you are newbie and have not had any prior playing of them.

    1. My top suggestion is for you to take back your LG player. Tell them it doesn't work. Get a refund or a credit. Where did you buy it? Buy a Sony Blu-ray. Even if you buy from Amazon, you can get a Sony Blu-ray for under $100. If you can, buy it at Costco. They are the best on the world for returning something you don't like. STAY AWAY FROM LG PLAYERS AND VIZIO PLAYERS, GET A SONY!!!!!!!!

    2. You didn't answer my previous question to you, are you using an HDMI connection from your Blu player to your TV?

    3. One thing about Blu discs, they are like computer software and can take up to a minute to load. You may even see a blank screen for a minute while it uploads. I had that in playing the Wings Blu. (Also, there is about a 30-second overture in black for the film.)

    4. To get a software update, you can call LG's customer. I am sure they can send a DVD with it on it. Do not try downloading the update over the internet. That may work but it can also backfire during transmission and you will have a large paperweight on your hands.

    5. Same as the first. Return your player and get a Sony. LG players are notorious for not playing some items.

I will be out for a few days and won't be able to reply until Tuesday.

  15. This is similar in tones in some ways to Bogart's Deadline U.S.A., just without the criminal part of the story. Jack Webb plays an editor during the events of one night. William Conrad is in it, too, and provides some of the best moments. It's cornball, to be sure, but worth checking out right after Webb's The D.I. (For those who don't know what "-30-" means, you will find out at the end of the picture.)
