I've never cared much for him, as he is usually so hammy. Witness "Dracula" and even his small bit as a reporter in "The Invisible Man." And especially "Frankenstein"...but then it hit me that he was really the first one to be an assistant to a mad scientist, if I am not mistaken. He set the path for those that followed.

Gagman, what player do you have? It is possible that you might need a software upgrade. Of course, it is also possible that the disc could be defective. Take the Blu disc into a store like Best Buy and say you are interested in buying a TV but would like to see how this movie looks on it. I've done that.
Another thing, you said you got the Blu and the DVD of the title. You mean that you both items separately, right? Not a combo/DVD package. Because the U.S. release is a standalone Blu disc.

As has been mentioned previously, *The Magnificent Ambersons* DVD is coming out separate from the Citizen Kane exclusive from Amazon. Release date is Jan. 31st. List price is $14.96.

I've seen this performed twice. Once, here in Los Angeles, with the East/West Players, a mostly Asian company.
The second, on Broadway in 2006, with Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone, which was a wonderful production where each of the actors also played at least one musical instrument in it.

Before a lot of people write in saying they see the recent Johnny Depp film in their onscreen TV listings tonight, be calm (or Mr. Todd will get you). In actual fact, what is on is a 1982 videotaped version of the onstage Broadway musical with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn, and is part of the Lansbury SOTM. (It was filmed during the tour here in Los Angeles, I believe.) Both actors are wonderfully hammy in it (but for this kind of material, what would you expect?) and the Stephen Sondheim music and lyrics are great.
It's different than what you are used to seeing, but enjoy it for what it is.

Eureka Entertainment (UK) have revealed their upcoming Blu/DVD titles for the months of April, May, and June 2012. There will be seven new releases added to the Masters of Cinema series: Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend; Hitchcock's Lifeboat, plus Island of Lost Souls, Ruggles of Red Gap. In addition, Kenji Mizoguchi's (1954), as well as one non-Masters of Cinema release,Takashi Miike's Yatterman (2009).
Eureka Entertainment also continues its ongoing association with Bounty Films (responsible for the UK release of The Human Centipede) with the release of Yûdai Yamaguchi's Deadball (DVD only).
Note: Eureka Entertainment have also revealed that they have acquired the rights for Carl Theodor Dreyer's classic The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928).
It is unknown at this point but they will more the Blus will be Region B (Europe) only. The DVDs will be PAL only.

Don't get too excited that you go out looking for it in stores. I went today to Costco, Best Buy, Target, and Frys. No place had it. They also didn't have The Apartment, Annie Hall or Manhattan that came out today. And only the three Hitchcocks are at Costco. I have the Wings on order with Amazon but they haven't sent it yet. And Amazon doesn't cvsrry The Apartment on Blu.

Though they are not officially out until Tuesday, some people have found Notorious, Spellbound, and Rebecca on Blu-ray at some Costco's (not all) at $9.99 each. (Amazon is $16.99 each.)
Update: They are at Costco in Burbank right now. Picked all three up.

The star of today's "Reach For The Sky" is Kenneth More. During the 1950s, he was a MAJOR box-office draw in the UK.
He first appeared in a supporting role in 1948's Scott of the Antarctic. More supporting parts followed, and he worked his way up to being one of the four main actors in Genevieve (1953). It was that film that made him a star.
Then he won the BFA Best British Actor Award for Doctor in the House (1954).
He got to elevate his status to international markets by repeating a role he starred in on stage in The Deep Blue Sea, this time with Vivien Leigh.
Today's Reach For The Sky (1956) came shortly after that.
A Night To Remember (1958) may be the high point in his career, simply because of the endurance of popularity of the film.
More was the number one box-office star in England, even surviving a flop like The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw with Jayne Mansfield and in the first remake of the classic The 39 Steps:
Sink the Bismarck (1960) was based on actaul events and became a big hit:
As the films that the Sixties brought forth changed, his popularity decreased. But he did achieve success on British stage and TV, plus appearing in a few films, including Battle of Britain and Scrooge (as the Ghost of Christmas Present).
Kenneth More died in 1982 of Parkinson's Disease.

Whuke I can't think of anyone who could take Kaye's place (though I like that suggestion of Hugh Jackman), I can thnk of one person who would be great in the Glynis Johns role. Amy Adams. And she can sing. She can be all-business one moment, then soft and romantic the next. And Jeremy Irons for the Basil Rathbone part.

In a recent announcement, Hammer Films revealed that 2012 will see the first results of a significant effort to restore popular titles in the Hammer library. Spearheaded by Studio Canal, the restoration initiative includes Anolis Entertainment, Pinewood Studios, illuminate Hollywood fka HTV, Warner Brothers, and Cineimage; over the next few years, more than thirty movies will receive newly remastered and restored Blu-ray editions.
Currently, the United Kingdom will benefit most significantly from this news - Studio Canal has already planned the first wave of Hammer Blu-rays in the UK. On March 5th, the distributor will release Blu-rays of Dracula: Prince of Darkness, The Reptile, and The Plague of the Zombies.
In addition, Hammer's press release also indicated upcoming Blu-rays for the following titles:

* Rasputin the Mad Monk
* The Mummy's Shroud
* The Curse of Frankenstein
* Dracula (AKA Horror of Dracula)
* The Mummy
Concerning the aforementioned six titles, no further details - including technical and supplementary specifications as well as release dates - are known. The press release does claim that all Hammer films in this initiative will boast "fully-restored HD picture and restored sound...[and|http://forums.tcm.com/] a host of newly-filmed extras, including interviews with cast members. These documentary extras are being produced by Hammer expert and historian, Marcus Hearn – author of the recent The Hammer Vault."
Of particular note are the plans regarding the Dracula (AKA Horror of Dracula) restoration. The press release claims that "recently-discovered footage...originally cut from the British version...has been restored...courtesy of The National Film Center at The Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. The Japanese footage features an extended and particularly gruesome death scene for Dracula, as well as a moment considered too erotic by the censors of the day (1958)."
Hammer hopes that similarly themed cut material will surface for other pictures and is calling on private collectors in possession of rare Hammer film footage to contact any company involved with this project.

Again, as of now, the more specific Blu-ray release plans only apply in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, the press release suggests that the restoration involvement of US companies Warner Brothers Motion Picture Imaging and Thought Equity Motion bodes well for North American Hammer aficionados in the near future.

I went to the Tillicum Drive-In Theater in Victoria, B.C., occasionally when I was in my teens and I didn't have a car. They had a area inside where you could look through a window and watch and hear the movie...but much as you may have been there for the movie, the others in the audience were not the best to have around. They would throw popcorn and lit matches at people in the front rows.

There are several possibilities.
If one DVD you tried (Blue Bird), didn't play visually but did via the audio, it sounds like a connection problem.
1. Are you using an HDMI connection between your Blu player and your TV?
2. You are not going from the player to an audio receiver to TV, are you?
I have read about problems with numerous LG players. Among them, the 570 and the 590. You mentioned buying it just two months ago, but that the disc doesn't even load. The fault could lie with the player itself. Where did you purchase it? I would definitely look at returning it for a different brand, not an LG. Sony should always be your first choice since they basically came up with Blu-ray. You can now get players under $100.
I believe you are also here in the L.A. area, aren't you? I could swing by at some point to look things over, and bring along a Blu player I have to test the disc.
