  1. In addition to the WB panel on the Blu release of Tom & Jerry and the WB cartoons on Thursdaym, the 21st, there is also a panel a few hours later that looks good: 5:00-6:00 2011-2012: The Golden Age of Blu-ray?? With such titles as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Ben-Hur, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia, Titanic, and Raiders of the Lost Ark on the way, could this be Blu-ray's Golden Age? Panelists Bill Hunt, Adam Jahnke, and Todd Doogan of The Digital Bits.com, along with BD producers Charles de Lauzirika (Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Amazing Spider-Man, Prometheus, Crave) and Cliff Stephenson (Rambo, The Expendables, Crank 2, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), Warner Home Video's George Feltenstein (senior vice president, theatrical catalog marketing) and othere discuss the subject, hold Q&A, and offer giveaways. 2. These are mostly not for me. I have almost all of the flims in these various series anyway and I like my films one at a time and not on those double sided discs in that kind of packaging. Just not for me. Actually, they are not double-sided. There are 4 DVDs in each pack, one per movie. And they come with the extras (these are the DVDs from the individual releases). Only occasionally will you find a double-sided disc, but that will be because it is something like Les Miserables which has the 1935 version on one side and the 1952 version on the other. So, in that case, you are actually getting 5 movies in that set, not 4. And a followup to something TB mentioned earlier...the actual sets don't say "Melodramas" or "Musical" on them, which is why Anna and the King of Siam can be in with three musicals.
  3. Cat Ballou has a fun commentary track with Michael Callan and Dwayne Hickman. Blu-ray has gone the DVDs one better. Some have somebody like the director standing between the one screen showing what we normally saw and another with various things going on. Also, on Blu, the remake of 3:10 to Yuma, have the main picture filling up most of the screen, while on the right hand side something like 5 different small screens showing stunts, different angles, special effects, etc. The Robe on Blu has a picture-in-picture feature where you can compare the two different versions, standard and widescreen versions. Interesting to see actors doing slightly different things in the two.
  4. It is odd about Anna. But these 4-packs are excellent. I bought almost all the different ones when they came out. (Passed on the ones that had been part of their Studio Classics series.) There was something like 17 different sets. What Target has left now are just the remainders. Here's a list of the 17 sets: The Blue Max / The Desert Fox / Immortal Sergeant / Sink the Bismarck An Affair to Remember / Leave Her to Heaven / A Letter to Three Wives / Peyton Place) Black Widow / Call Northside 777 / Dangerous Crossing / Laura Fantastic Voyage / The Lost World / The Towering Inferno / Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Anna Karenina / A Farewell to Arms / Les Miserables / The Sun Also Rises The Agony and the Ecstasy / The Bible / Demetrius and the Gladiators / The Robe Journey to the Center of the Earth / Little Miss Broadway / My Friend Flicka / Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines The Desert Rats / Twelve O'Clock High / Von Ryan's Express / The Young Lions Desk Set / Hollywood Cavalcade / How to Steal a Million / I Was a Male War Bride All About Eve / Beyond the Valley of the Dolls / The Inn of the Sixth Happiness / Valley of the Dolls Anna and the King of Siam / Can-Can / Daddy Long Legs / Star! Move Over, Darling / O. Henry's Full House / On the Riviera / Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys! Francis of Assisi / The Gospel Road / A Man Called Peter / The Song of Bernadette The Alligator People / The Cabinet of Caligari / The Fly / House of the Damned On the Avenue / Pin Up Girl / Something for the Boys / You're in the Navy Now Anastasia / Gentleman's Agreement / The Ox-Bow Incident / The Snake Pit Battle for the Planet of the Apes/The Day The Earth Stood Still/The Neptune Factor/The Poseidon Adventure
  5. You're right, they sure did. And it can't be "Virginia City" because that didn't have Olivia de Havilland.
  6. The 1962 version of Mutiny on the Bounty is coming to Blu on Nov. 8th. The extras are Alternate Prologue and Epilogue Sequences Not Seen Theatrically After the Cameras Stopped Rolling: The Journey of the Bounty (2006 Featurette) 1964 New York World's Fair Promo (Featurette) Story of the HMS Bounty (Featurette) Tour of the Bounty (Featurette) Voyage of the Bounty to St. Petersburg (Featurette) Theatrical Trailer
  7. Take care, Mr. O. Get your rest after the surgery and we'll be there when you return. You are TCM to us.
  8. Thanks, Kyle, didn't know. But at least glad I saw it now or I would have really worried when I tuned in tonight and didn't see him. Hope he gets his rest after the surgery and is back soon.

  10. Well, thank goodness, I can *finally* reveal the last bit of upciming Blu-ray information I learned when I (and others) had that chance some time back to lunch with George Feltenstein at Warner Bros.: *The great Warner Bros. cartoons are coming to Blu-ray!* It has been announced through the San Diego Comic Con program schedule. Thursday, July 21 +3:00-4:00 Classic Warner Bros./Hanna-Barbera Cartoons Going Blu-ray— Animation historian Jerry Beck and Warner Archives' George Feltenstein lead a panel of renowned animation and restoration experts, including Spike Brandt (The Looney Tunes Show), Tony Cervone (The Looney Tunes Show), and Paul Dini (Lost, Tower Prep), in presenting and discussing selected vintage cartoons from {color:royalblue}Warner Home Video's fall 2011 Blu-ray release of the newly remastered Tom and Jerry Golden Collection and *Looney Tunes Platinum Collections.*
  11. A knock comes upon your door. What to do? I guess it all comes down to what is on your TV at the time... If it is a romantic comedy, you should open it, it could be Mr. Right. (or if you have something racier on TV, it could be Mr. Right Now.) If you have a film noir on, your best best is to climb out your window, make your way back into the building and silently come up on the person and shoot them (why take chances?)
  12. Amazon is having a Lightning Deal today at 2 pm Pacific/5 pm Eastern on the Criterion DVD set, *Three Silent Classics by Josef Von Sternberg*. It's going to be 50% off list, so that should bring it down to around $39.99. Sale ends at 6 pm Pacific/9 pm Easter, or earlier of stock runs out. (Also, a reminder, Barnes & Noble will start its 50% off Criterion sale on Tuesday through August 1st.) EDIT: Deal over but the price turned out to be $35.99, a really terrific price. 13. Mon., July 10th, 1939 It's too bad you can't see the actual ad below. I think it is the biggest ad to appear in1939, about 8 " by 14"
  14. Sunday, July 9th, 1939 Regular articles and ads will return tomorrow. In the meantime, here are some more things from a 1939 movie magazine, including a photo session with Clarence Bull.
  15. I am not sure what in the world has got you so fascinated by propaganda, but you definitely need to take a break from it. I am not going to say that you should spend that time cracking open a book on spelling, though you should. But what in the world are "shifites"?
  16. For Darren McGavin fans, A&E is releasing Mike Hammer - The Complete Series for Sept. 6th. http://www.classicflix.com/mike-hammer-complete-series-p-11452.html I'll be interested to see the picture quality. There are several people on eBay selling the set, but unlicensed to be sure.
  17. kingrat, thank you for moderating a very successful Challenge. And congrats, Lonesome!!!
  18. Saturday, July 8th, 1939 Don't get too excited when you see the name Cansino below. Yes, family of Rita Hayworth, but not her in picture. That looks to be Eduardo and Elsa Cansino.
