Matt I'll have to check on that song...
-
Fred & Matt,
I love you guys!
I wish they would show more of the titles that aren't available on video/dvd.
I'm still debating over getting cable or not. There are too many movies I have that I haven't watched. Doesn't seem right to tape more of them before I watch what I have.
-
Matt,
Thanks for the link to the Nimoy/Shatner CD. I hate to admit this, but I have the original albums! LOL I've been collecting vinyl for 25 years, and they're in there with some other oddities! I even have an Adam West single, where he's doing a song called "Miranda", and one with Frank Gorshin.
Have you seen "Free Enterprise"? Worth a watch if you are into Trek. I realized what a geek I was after viewing it.
I agree with Hollywood re-hashing story lines. It just seems like they have run out of ideas. I think I'll watch the copy of "I'd Climb The Highest Mountain" that I picked up at a thrift store this afternoon.

I think I'm the last person to hear the Ted/Dick joke!
Matt, where is "The Big Nowhere"??? LOL
-
Oh my Gosh! I'm laughing so loud I woke my cat up! ****
They still probably wouldn't do as good a job as Wilfred!
Speaking of commercials....
Have you seen the one with Leonard Nimoy for Aleeve????!!!! I sat in disbelief with my jaw on the floor!! Maybe he figured Shatner was making such good money that he'd give it a try.
Can you tell? I'm a Star Trek fan. LOL
I'm still wanting to ask Val Kilmer why he did not one but TWO movies with Slater. Maybe he lost a bet....

After reading all of the postings, I'm not sure if I want to transfer my tapes! I do remember being told that after watching a vhs tape, not to rewind it. The tape is warm, and rewinding it right after viewing causes it to stretch more. One thing I do like about tapes is that if there is a glitch on it, you can play through it. My player will freeze, and turn off . Then you have to go through the menu and chapters, to see when it will play again. Very frustrating.
Scarlett, I felt your pain! I ruined a tape trying to transfer it to dvd. I'll remember to use something I can easily replace next time to try again. I hope you didn't lose too many of your favorites.
With all the cd's out on the market, I still prefer my vinyl. I have a huge monolith of it growing in my living room and bedroom! It's so warm and fuzzy! Nothing like grabbing a stack of favorite 45's and spinning away! I still make my own cassettes to listen to in the truck. I doubt anyone is going to steal my cassette player. They wouldn't get enough money for it! LOL

Wow! I was surprised to see this subject!!! I'll break my own anonymity, as a sober member of AA. Almost 16 years. First time I watched "The Doors" was hard. Too much euphoric recall. Same with "Lost Weekend". In "Unforgiven", Clint went back to drinking and his former behavior when he started again after hearing of his friends death. There is a movie called "The Story Of Bill W.", but I don't remember who was in it. Alot of people don't know that Bill W. tried LSD in the sixties because he thought it might be a cure for alcholism.
"Requiem For A Dream", is supposed to be about alcholism as well, but I have not had the time to view it.
"Drunks" is another title you may want to check out as well. (Sorry, no time to watch that one yet either...)
Are you writing a paper???
Just curious! Ciao!

Matt, I'm catching up on the postings, and have tears running down my cheek at your comments!!!
Too Funny!!!
My additions to the list would be Matt Dillion and Christian Slater. I think they are both pointless!!!!
-
Rusty,
Sorry I took so long to respond to you. I think it is more the song itself that I don't like. It wouldn't matter who sang it! There are a few tunes that I just can't listen to! The "Girl From Impanima" is another. (excuse my spelling if it is wrong).

Glad for the info on which discs are the best!
This new computer has the Media Center on it and something called Light Scribe. I guess it makes a label right onto the disc (by magic I guess). Haven't had time to try it yet. Anyone familiar with this? Thanks!

Great thread, and to Fred, your worldly knowledge makes me feel like a junior high student!
I refuse to watch a remake of Alfred's Rear Window. He did remake one of his own though, "Man Who Knew Too Much". I prefer the original with Peter Lorre. I got really tired of hearing Ms. Day sing her song.
The remake of "The Pink Panther" is on my list of don't see. Peter Sellers was a genius. I find myself getting the "Herbert Lom twitch" frequently on busy days at work. I heard that rumor about GWTW too. I certainly hope it is just that.
I don't think they could remake "The Maltese Falcon".

Kyle,
Diabolique is incredible. After watching it, I realized how many films it influenced. I thought I'd share some of my "guilty pleasure" favorites that aren't as high-brow!
Atomic Submarine (Total Cheese! I love it!)
Predator (Jesse steals the show)
Star Trek-Original Series-The Doomsday Machine
I remember my mom watching that on TV, and I was hiding behind the wall in the hallway because that glistening ice cream cone monster was on the screen! Now I can recite most of the dialog! LOL
Kronos-Ravenger of Planets (Who thought a watertower could walk?)
Ciao!

Kyle in Hollywood...Thanks for the tip on Scarface...I'll have to give it a spin again and see if I see the X's. Does that show up on the DVD, or just the tape?? I'm so glad you listed Rififi!!! I love that film. I recently handed my copy of All the Kings Men to someone at work to watch. Haven't heard what they thought of it, but it's one of my favorites too.
-
Gosh pktrekgril! I wish I only had 25 to watch!!! LOL I understand about not having enough time to watch everything I wish I could. (working girl and musician-takes alot of time!) I'll add my few favorites.
Peeping Tom-1960, Michael Powell director
Wages Of Fear -1953, Henri-Georges Clouzot director
Out Of the Past Robert Mitchum
The Roaring Twenties James Cagney
Curse of The Demon Dana Andrews
I'd better stop...I'll be here all night!

Glad this thread was started! Looks like I'm going to have to learn all this soon. I had a sad bit of news today...My Pioneer DVD/LD player never made it to the tech in California..He (HAL) was DOA! I guess something fell on him in transit for his yearly check up. They are going to "outside sources" to find the same machine. I'm hoping they find one. I have a few hundred laserdiscs movies that are not easy to find in any format, and have been putting off recording them to DVD. Some of them have great commentaries that were not put on the DVDs. He didn't even get to say goodbye to his fellow players in the house. Keep your fingers crossed for me please! Sniff...Sniff...

To Matt,
Way too funny! Moments just sometimes stay with us don't they? LOL
-
I don't remember...but my mom told me my first movie was "Bridge On the River Kwai". My parents had gone to the drive in to see this, and I guess I cried through the movie till the last 10 mins. My dad said he still can't watch it because he hears me crying!!! LOL
I remember seeing "Jaws" when it first came out, at the Orpheum in Flagstaff, AZ. Still scares me today!
-
Mongo! You've given me something to do this week! LOL I had no idea!
-
Filmlover, I wish I could afford to have cable so I could watch more of the selections on TCM. I debate every few months about my budget and if I could swing it. If I did have cable, I would probably not leave the house! MacDonald is not one of my favorites, but I would watch it just for the nostalgia factor. When I came onto this site last week, I did so in hopes that I could chat with others that speak my language. My co-workers are too young and not interested in alot of the films/actors that I am. (I still try) It does seem to be alot of nit picking here, but I know there is no way the programmers could make all of us happy. Maybe they are trying to get a younger crowd to tune in with the hopes of showing them there are great movies in black & white! Oh yes...If anyone has an abundance of snow please send it to Phoenix...we really need it! Ciao!

To Melly; When I watch a silent with no score, I just put on my own classical music!
-
Yikes! Looks like it's been one heck of a conversation. After reviewing the comments since my last visit, one thing I came away with is irritation of there not being enough movies before the 30's being shown. I hope I'm correct in that assumption. I am not a subscriber, but a friend tapes things for me. I've been doing this only for a year, but I have noticed there are not as many pre-1930's movies as I'd like to see. It does look like many titles are repeated, and a lot of newer films are being shown. I would like to see more silent selections make it to the schedule! Where else am I going to get a chance to see something besides the "standard" silent titles available?
-
How about a Robert Ryan day? I feel he is under-rated as well. I was so happy to see the "Set Up" on DVD.
-
8 tracks!!! LOL I still have vinyl and cassettes, but never owned and 8 track. Many chances, but I knew better! I'm with you on the format changes. We'll all switch over to DVD's then they'll come out with something else to keep you one step behind!
-
I know what you mean! I've only had this one 2 weeks. I named it C3PO; it does all sorts of things, but is a pain in the tush! LOL I'm using my old one as a plant stand...

What movie can NEVER be re-made?

What a hoot jarhfive!!! **** I'm thinking of making a small doomsday machine to hang in my living room, complete with lights and the doomed ship! LOL Keep looking for your pics. I'm sure they will turn up.
