Everything about Warren Beatty is propitious. His sister, Shirley MacLaine, is a big movie star, but he refuses to capitalize on her name. He debuts on Broadway and is nominated for a Tony Award. The play Is by William Inge, which gives him an opportunity to make his Hollywood debut in a William Inge original screenplay, directed by Streetcar/ Waterfront/ East of Eden director Elia Kazan and, playing opposite one of the top Hollywood female stars, Natalie Wood. Propitious may not be a big enough word for Warren. He has success in the movies, but insists on becoming a producer. He's pushing his own movie. He Has trouble selling it in Hollywood: Who wants Warren's gangster movie? Somehow he gets Jack Warner to finance it and Bonnie and Clyde becomes the hit of the 1967 season with 10 Academy Award nominations, including one for him as best actor. In all Warren has garnered 14 Academy Award nominations for acting, producing, writing, and directing. He won best director for Reds in 1981. Of the eight films that he has produced, they have received 53 Academy Award nominations in total. In recognition of his achievement in Cinema, the Academy honored him with the prestigious Irving G Thalberg Award in 1999. Warren's successful reputation in cinema only pales in relation to his public reputation as a Serial Ladies Man with his top movie star leading ladies. Starting with his first Hollywood Leading Lady Natalie Wood and ending with his wife Annette Bening, who is also the mother of his four children. If you can name all of Warren's ladies, you are probably doing better than he is at this point. LOL So Happy Birthday to Warren- - AFI Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, as well as a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. Warren has done it all. BTW-- His opening number for Shampoo shows that he also has superb taste in music. Woody Allen could learn something from him here. LOL
