Some thoughts. Just watched this musical for the umpteenth time and with a nod to Charles Dickens, it was the best of musicals and the worst of musicals. Best - incredible musical numbers and stars with the music of Rodgers and Hart. Worst - why bother with any story? It was a maudlin narrative that was so far from the truth. I love that Perry Como (my personal favorite ever) was a character in the film named Eddie Anders and at the end he is introduced at the memorial service by Gene Kelly as Perry Como. So much for continuity. (My Pittsburgh heart swells with pride at that scene, though) Perry Como's stint in Hollywood was short lived and almost sent him back to the barbershop. He looks very uncomfortable in his few outings in this and other films. His best clip in any film is "Mountain Greenery" and for me it is a major highlight in the movie.
