In With Flynn! (Errol that is) This is a thread for those that can't get enough of Errol Flynn. I was composing a reply to Speedracer awhile back, and began gathering so much non-extraneous info that it required a more organized post. By the time I got it arranged, the thread had disappeared. So I decided to post this stuff in it's own thread, for the enjoyment of at least a few here. So for Speedo, and Tom, and myself, and whomever else here that "Can't get enough of (or about) anything related to Errol Flynn, This thread is for you! Errol Leslie Flynn (June 20, 1909 – October 14, 1959) I start with a little bit about the women who loved and married Flynn... Errol's Wives Lili Damita (July 10, 1904 – March 21, 1994) (married Errol in 1935; divorced in 1942) A French-American actress and singer and dancer, who appeared in 33 films between 1922 and 1937. As a teenager, she was performing in popular music halls, eventually appearing in the Revue at the Casino de Paris. She also worked as a photographic model. Offered a role in film as a prize for winning a magazine beauty competition in 1921, she appeared in several silent films before being offered her first leading role in Das Spielzeug von Paris (1925) by Hungarian-born director Michael Curtiz. She was an instant success, and Curtiz directed her in two more films. She (*"reportedly") married Curtiz in 1925, and they divorced a year later in 1926. (*Edited: for conjecture) In 1928, at the invitation of Samuel Goldwyn she went to Hollywood, making her American debut in a film titled The Rescue. Leased out to various studios, she appeared with stars such as Gary Cooper, Maurice Chevalier, Laurence Olivier, Cary Grant and James Cagney. Her films included the box office successes The C o c k-Eyed World (1929), the semi-silent The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929) and This Is the Night (1932). In 1935, she married a virtual unknown who would soon become Hollywood's biggest box office attraction, Errol Flynn. At 31, Lili was 5 years older than the 26 year old Flynn (his only wife in which such an age discrepancy would be evident). Errol was always the "ladies man" and even more-so once he became a Hollywood heart throb. By most accounts (an ever suspicious and jealous) Lili and Errol had quite a tempestuous marriage. Late in their almost 7 year marital relationship they had a son, Sean Flynn (born 1941), conceived no doubt during one of their many "make-up" sessions. Following the marriage, she retired from the screen, the couple divorcing in 1942. Barbara Hershey portrayed Damita in the TV film My Wicked, Wicked Ways (1985) based on Errol Flynn's autobiography. Lili married one more time in 1962, that marriage lasting 21 years before ending in divorce in 1983. She had no other children. During the Vietnam War, her son Sean Flynn was working as a freelance photo journalist under contract to Time magazine when he and fellow journalist Dana Stone went missing on the road south of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on April 6, 1970. Although Damita spent an enormous amount of money searching for her son, he was never found, and in 1984 he was declared legally dead. Lili Damita died of Alzheimer's disease on March 21, 1994. She was 89. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lili_Damita Movie Legends - Lili Damita https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYt0QiRN8XY LILI DAMITA TRIBUTE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTi8Socalyk Errol Flynn y Lili Damita https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckxJdeSbYco Nora Eddington (February 25, 1924 – April 10, 2001) (married Errol in 1943; divorced in 1949) An American actress and socialite. She was best known as the second wife of actor Errol Flynn. Eddington was featured as an actress in several minor film roles. The daughter of a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff, Nora Eddington was nineteen when she met Errol Flynn in February 1943. At the time, she was working at the courthouse where Flynn's notorious 1943 trial for statutory rape was taking place. The trial followed accusations by two under-age girls, Betty Hansen and Peggy Satterlee over alleged incidents that reportedly took place in the home of one of Flynn's friends, and on board Flynn's yacht the Sirocco, in late 1942. Flynn was acquitted and he and a smitten Nora were married in Mexico in 1944. At 35, Flynn was 16 years older than Nora when they married. Their daughter, Deirdre, was born on January 10, 1945. By the time their second daughter, Rory, was born in March 1947, their 3 year marriage was already essentially over. The estranged couple were "officially" divorced in 1949. Nora married two more times, to singer Dick Haymes (1949-1953) ending in divorce, and afterward to Richard Black in a marriage that ended in divorce shortly before her death. Her third marriage produced a son who died from leukemia at the age of 10. Nora wrote a book about her first marriage, an expose titled "Errol and Me: The Wicked True Story of Errol Flynn's Stormy Marriage" (published in 1960). Following a long battle with kidney disease, Nora Eddington died in 2001, at the age of 77. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nora_Eddington NORA EDDINGTON TRIBUTE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-Fx4pNI3yU Nora Eddington's Grave https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y--AdkGQco Patrice Wymore (December 17, 1926 – March 22, 2014) (married Errol in 1950; remained married, though estranged, until his death in 1959) An American film, television and stage actress of the 1950s and 1960s, known for her marriage to Errol Flynn. A young actress, she starred in Rocky Mountain (1950) opposite the Hollywood legend Errol Flynn, with whom she would become romantically involved. Eighteen years her senior, Flynn and Wymore were traveling and living in Europe, mainly in Mallorca aboard Flynn's yacht, the Zaca. At the age of 23, she married the 41-year-old actor in October 1950 in Nice, France. Wymore continued to act, appearing in several films over the next few years. She temporarily retired from Hollywood after giving birth to her daughter, Arnella Flynn, born December 25, 1953. The daughter would later become a fashion model in Europe. In 1955 she appeared with her husband Errol Flynn and Anna Neagle in the film version of King's Rhapsody. Although only in his forties, Flynn was already in a physical and mental decline by the time they married. Wymore took a break from acting to care for her now ailing husband, and to better raise their daughter, while settling on their estate in Jamaica. However, due to Flynn's alcohol and drug addictions, the couple separated. They never divorced, however, and were still legally married at the time of his death on October 14, 1959. On August 21, 1975, Patrice and Errol's daughter, Arnella, gave birth to a son (Luke Flynn). Sadly, Arnella would eventually follow in her father's footsteps self-destructing from drug and alcohol addiction in 1998. Patrice never remarried and had no other children. At 87, she died of natural causes in Portland, Jamaica, on March 22, 2014. She is survived by her grandson Luke Flynn (an actor and producer). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrice_Wymore Errol Flynn Weds Patrice Wymore (1950) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juhzGy0Gy0o PATRICE WYMORE TRIBUTE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwqX7QOTE2I Though Errol bedded many women in his short life, perhaps his last "relationship" is worthy of mention, if for no other reason than she was his last. "I like my scotch old, and my women young." Errol Flynn "I'm far too old for her. But sadly, she's not too young for me." Errol Flynn, from The Last Of Robin Hood Beverly Elaine Aadland (September 16, 1942 – January 5, 2010) Beverly is the young woman who was with Errol at the time of his death in 1959. Also known by such pet names given by Errol as "Woodsey," "Little Wood Nymph" and "SC," she was 17 at the time she was with actor Errol Flynn when he died of a heart attack on October 14, 1959 in Vancouver, British Columbia at the age of 50. Born in Hollywood, California, Beverly Aadland entered show business as a youngster, appearing in the film Death of a Salesman (1951). * As a teenager, she appeared in films including South Pacific (1958) and had a bit (uncredited) part in Too Much Too Soon (1958) which also starred Flynn. Aadland first attracted Flynn's roving eye when she was still 15. Beverly entered into an intimate relationship with Errol, and later co-starred in Flynn's last movie, a quasi documentary style film provocatively titled Cuban Rebel Girls (1959). *Edited for accuracy. Original line posted was: "She also appeared in films including South Pacific (1958). As a teenager, she co-starred in Errol Flynn's last movie, a quasi documentary style film provocatively titled Cuban Rebel Girls (1959), and later entered into an intimate relationship with him." In 1961, Beverly's mother, Florence Aadland, alleged in the book "The Big Love" that actor Flynn had a sexual relationship with her daughter starting at age 15, yet there's some speculation he was led to believe she was at least 18 at that time. The book was later made into a play starring Tracey Ullman. Beverly Aadland gave an account of her relationship with Flynn in People magazine in 1988, confirming that she had had a sexual relationship with Flynn in her teens. Her relationship with Flynn was the subject of the 2013 movie The Last of Robin Hood. Beverly Aadland was played by Dakota Fanning. Errol was played by Kevin Kline. Florence Aadland was played by Susan Sarandon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beverly_Aadland Beverly Aadland - IMDB http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0007323/ Errol Flynn's Pretty Baby by Beverly Aadland October 17, 1988 http://people.com/archive/errol-flynns-pretty-baby-vol-30-no-16/ https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2013/09/errol-flynn-toronto-film-festival Beverly Aadland - An American Film Actress https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyYIO-DKgT0 Errol Flynn and Beverly Aadland at the Lido Club in Swallow Street http://www.nickelinthemachine.com/2009/06/errol-flynn-and-beverly-aadland-at-the-lido-club-in-swallow-street/ I was Errol Flynn's little nymph (Nov 9, 1996 interview) https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/4705765/I-was-Errol-Flynns-little-nymph.html Errol Flynn's last girlfriend was no pushover on the bearskin rug (Jan. 14,2010) https://www.smh.com.au/national/errol-flynns-last-girlfriend-was-no-pushover-on-the-bearskin-rug-20100113-m6xy.html The Death Of Errol Flynn, And His Girlfriend Beverly Aadland (Jan. 5, 2014) https://flashbak.com/the-death-of-errol-flynn-and-his-under-age-girlfriend-beverly-aadland-8174/ The Hermosa Beach girl who fell in love with Errol Flynn (Jan. 25, 2014) http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/history/2014/01/25/the-hermosa-beach-girl-who-fell-in-love-with-errol-flynn/?doing_wp_cron=1519970604.1787340641021728515625 Beverly Aadland - sings Slowly.mp4 (narration in German) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHBbCPEjdKs Errol Flynn talks Fidel Castro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=filBYa1AJEA Cuban Rebel Girls (1959) Errol Flynn Opening clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI18-ueijqA The Last of Robin Hood Official Trailer (2014) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__E10mXTOEc Kevin Kline as Errol Flynn in "The Last of Robin Hood" at TIFF 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ0R8Pgx Flynn's kids Errol Flynn - The Love of a Father https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80l9X8KFp8 Sean Leslie Flynn (May 31, 1941 – June 1971) son of Lili Damita and Errol Flynn American actor, singer, and freelance photojournalist best known for his coverage of the Vietnam War. Sean idolized his father and sought to emulate his adventurous lifestyle as an actor, singer, and photojournalist. In September 1961 it was announced that Sean Flynn had signed a recording contract for a company known as Hi-Fidelity R.V. Records, and had already recorded four songs for them. Two came out "Stay in My Heart" and "Secret Love". The songs were released regionally as a 45rpm single. The single is now a rare collector's item. At the age of 20, Sean Flynn starred in The Son of Captain Blood a 1962 Italian/Spanish sequel to his fathers 1935 hit. He made a several more films in Europe, but became bored with acting, and he went to Africa in late 1964 to try his hand at being a guide for safaris and big-game hunting. He also spent time as a game warden in Kenya. In the latter part of 1965, he needed money, so he made two Spaghetti Westerns in Spain and Italy that were released in 1966. In the summer of 1966, Flynn went to Singapore to star in his eighth and final movie, a French-Italian action film released in 1968 as Five Ashore in Singapore. Flynn arrived in South Vietnam in January 1966 as a freelance photojournalist, first for the French magazine Paris Match, then for Time Life, and finally for United Press International. His photos were soon published around the world. He made a name for himself as one of a group of high-risk photojournalists (which included Dana Stone, Tim Page, Henri Huet, John Steinbeck IV, Perry Deane Young, Nik Wheeler, Chas Gerretsen, and others) who would do anything to get the best pictures, even go into combat. In March 1966, Flynn was wounded in the knee while in the field. In April 1966 he was on patrol with some Green Berets and Chinese mercenaries. In May he was the only journalist who made it into the Tinh Hai pagoda in Da Nang. In June 1966, he left Vietnam long enough to star in his last movie. It was to be shot in Paris and Singapore and based on the 1959 novel, Cinq Gars Pour Singapour by Jean Bruce and was released as Cinq Gars Pour Singapour (Five Ashore in Singapore). After filming, Sean returned to Vietnam. In November 1966 he was credited with saving an Australian platoon from being decimated by a mine by identifying that mine while photographing the troops near Vung Tau. He made a parachute jump with the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division in December 1966. In February 1967 he and a friend, actor George Hamilton, went on a skiing holiday in Lebannon. In June 1967, he went to Israel to cover the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. He returned again to Vietnam in 1968, after the Tet offensive. In September 1968 he was working as a cameraman for CBS when he was injured slightly by grenade fragments while shooting a battle between US and enemy forces 85 miles south of Danang. While on assignment with special forces units and irregulars operating in remote areas in Cambodia in April 1970, Flynn and fellow photojournalist Dana Stone were captured by communist guerrillas. Neither man was seen or heard from again. Flynn went to Cambodia in 1970, to cover the combined U.S./ARVN operations ordered by then U.S. President Richard Nixon. On April 6, 1970, Flynn and a group of journalists left the city of Phnom Penh to attend a government sponsored press conference in Saigon. Flynn (who was freelancing) and fellow photojournalist Dana Stone (who was on assignment for CBS News) chose to travel on motorcycles instead of the limousines that the majority of the other journalists were traveling in (the limousines had been previously used by tourists before the journalists took them over). Reporter Steve Bell, who was one of the last Westerners to see the two alive, later said that after the press conference, Flynn and Stone had gotten word that there was a checkpoint on Highway 1 manned by members of the Viet Cong. Eager to get a photograph of the Viet Cong, Flynn and Stone decided to set out on Highway 1 alone. Before they left, Bell snapped the last photo ever taken of Flynn and Stone. Four other journalists - two Frenchmen and two Japanese - had also been captured by the Viet Cong inside Cambodia on the same day. By June 1970, 25 journalists were captured in Cambodia in the previous three weeks. Three had been killed, some returned and others missing. Flynn and Stone were never seen or heard from again and their remains have never been found. Although it is known that Flynn and Stone were captured by Viet Cong guerrillas at a checkpoint on Highway 1, their true fate is unclear. It has been suggested that they died in the hands of "hostile" forces. Citing various government sources, the current consensus is that Flynn and Stone were held captive for over a year before they were killed by the Khmer Rouge in June 1971. Flynn's mother, Lili Damita, spent an enormous amount of money searching for her son, with no success. In 1984 she had him declared legally dead. She died in 1994. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Flynn_(photojournalist) Sean Flynn bio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L35OzBbC8Hk Sean Flynn sings "Secret Love" (1961) Sean Flynn singing "Secret Love" and "Stay in My Heart" (1961) mix (slightly faster) Son of Captain Blood (1962) intro clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31hKcDf9qdM Five Ashore in Singapore (1966) intro clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsb2oWV5y4Y Sean Flynn Vietnam War Report 1969 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm2FVK49LS8 Dog Company - Sean Flynn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cELn8dSsXbk The Clash - Sean Flynn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBWRyzQSJQM Sean Flynn (Photojournalist) Last Known Footage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SslH1aOXrpY Sean Flynn (Errol Flynn's Son) MIA 1970 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WINREV3ny_Q Deirdre and Rory Flynn (girls) daughters of Nora Eddington and Errol Flynn Deirdre Flynn was born on January 10, 1945 in Mexico City. Afterward, she decided to try her talents on the other side of the camera and has since traveled the world as a still photographer for the film industry. Some of her notable still work credits include The Return of the Living Dead (1985), Remote Control (1988) and The Further Adventures of Tennessee Buck (1988). She also is the author of The Baron of Mulholland: A Daughter Remembers Errol Flynn (pub. 2006) and should not to be confused by another unrelated author with the same name. Currently, she is based in the Hollywood Hills, where she lives with her film producer husband Gideon Amir and their son Sean, who is carrying on the Flynn name as a successful film and television actor. Born July 14, 1989 Rory's son was named after her beloved half brother, Sean Leslie Flynn (who went MIA in Cambodia in 1970). Arnella Flynn Spent her earliest years traversing the globe and sailing with her parents. Errol left his wife Patrice Wymore for fifteen-year old Beverly Aadland when Arnella was three and her father died when she was five, shortly before her 6th birthday. At the age of 14 Arnella and her mother moved to the family estate in Jamaica, a 3,000 acre working coconut farm and cattle ranch. Arnella Flynn developed a fondness for the sea early in life, she enjoyed water skiing and boating. In her late teens, Arnella moved to London and began a modeling career. While in London, she was reunited with her sister Rory who was also modeling at the time and they became quite close. She eventually moved to New York and continued modeling. She married fashion photographer Carl Stoecker and in 1975, they had a son, Luke. Arnella traveled extensively throughout her life but always longed for the tranquility of the West Indies. In 1995 she moved back to Jamaica. Perhaps she was too much like the father that she never really knew. Arnella filled her idle hours with drink. She didn’t just put away a couple of cold ones. She drank Overproof White Rum straight. An alcoholic like her father and like him she used other drugs, including ganja. From there they diverged in their methods of self-destruction, Errol preferring opiates and barbiturates and Arnella craved the white demon – cocaine. According to an article by Kevin Smith, Arnella was once very pretty, "cool" and unpretentious but with a lot of problems. Despite her mother's efforts, nothing worked. When Arnella Flynn's desiccated body was discovered the response was similar to what it had been when her father died: people were shocked but not surprised. Both had made a pact with death: take me early, just let me be loaded till I arrive. She left a son Luke Stoecker (Flynn), behind. So for all you Lovely Ladies and Fine Gents out there in TCM land, this is radio Stephan55, wishing you pleasant dreams, and goodnight!
I see the announcement that the CFUB is closing as of 1/11/2016, is it closing to new members or being eliminated all together and if so is this a cost cutting move? I understand things change but the time it took to post photos on the site are they all going to be deleted or is their away to save all of them? All assistance would be greatly appreciated
