lzcutter
I'm really surprised that Robert Harris has never seen *Wizard of Oz* projected on the screen before. After reading your post, Filmlover, I am really looking forward to the screening of the digital print next Wednesday night here in the City of Angels. Thanks for posting the review, I really appreciate it.
HollywoodGolightly
At which theater are you going to watch it, Lynn? In other news, digitalbits.com has corrected the earlier statement in regards to The Professional (Leon) - they have checked with Sony Pictures and the blu-ray will include both the U.S. theatrical version as well as the international cut. filmlover
Lzcutter, I think that Robert Harris is saying he hasn't seen a print from 1939, not that he hasn't seen the film on the big screen. Since there were rereleases issued by the studio over the years, I am guessing he has seen the film in a theater, just not the original year's print. lzcutter
*Lzcutter, I think that Robert Harris is saying he hasn't seen a print from 1939, not that he hasn't seen the film on the big screen. Since there were rereleases issued by the studio over the years, I am guessing he has seen the film in a theater, just not the original year's print.* That makes a little more sense, filmlover. There have been some beautiful restorations of the film over the last 70 years and some less than great ones. I've seen the film on television in all black and white (we didn't have a color tv until the mid-1960s), in black and white and color on television, in 35mm and once in 16mm. The last restoration I saw in a theater was done about 25 years ago. I'm really looking forward to next Wednesday night. What theater? A good one on the West side of town. HollywoodGolightly
In yet another afternoon update, digitalbits.com called attention to a Variety article about the Weinsteins' decision to sell their video catalog to Vivendi Entertainment - and Bill Hunt speculates as to whether this might mean we'll finally see the release of the ultimate Kill Bill and Grindhouse on DVD and blu-ray. For classic movie fans, it should be worth noting that the Weinsteins also control video rights to Anthony Mann's epics, El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire. While these two have already been released on DVD - fairly recently, I might add -, one can only hope Vivendi will also release them on blu-ray in the not-too-distant future. (I believe at least one of them has already been released on BD in Europe). P.S.: Lynn - hope you enjoy the show. I used to love going to all the theaters in West L.A., especially the AMC in Century City. It is the only theater I've ever been in that had ceiling fans. HollywoodGolightly
I seem to remember someone had mentioned the UK blu-ray version of The Wizard of Oz, and I just did a search but couldn't come up with anything. At any rate, I thought I would mention the version that WHV is releasing in the UK because it is a normal case, and also because it includes a sing-along feature, which I've not seen mentioned among the features of the U.S. blu-ray version: This blu-ray version is available from amazon.uk for ?15.99 and will be released on Nov. 2: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wizard-Oz-Blu-ray-Judy-Garland/dp/B002EDTTJY The blu-ray discs themselves will probably be region free, but the sing-along DVD would almost certainly be Region 2. Here is a list of what the blu-ray set will include: Collector?s Edition Sing-Along Version ? 3 Discs BLU-RAY Release (2 BDs, 1 DVD Sing-Along) * Remastered feature with Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio * Commentary by Historian John Fricke including archival interviews of the film's cast and crew * The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Storybook * Prettier than ever: The Restoration of Oz * We Haven't Really Met Properly"" Supporting Cast Profiles * Music and Effects Track * Original mono Track * Sing-Along Audio Feature * Trailers * The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic [1990 TV special] * Memories of Oz [2001 TCM documentary] * The Art of Imagination: A Tribute to Oz * Because of the Wonderful Things it Does: The Legacy of Oz * Harold Arlen?s Home Movies * Outtakes and Deleted Scenes * It?s a Twister! HollywoodGolightly
*Slight Delay for Three Criterion BDs* Criterion Retailers have been alerted that three upcoming Blu-ray titles from Criterion will delayed one or two weeks. 'Monsoon Wedding', initially announced for October 13, will street on October 20. In turn, 'Howards End' and 'Wings of Desire', previously slated for October 20, will be available on November 3. As of this writing, the delay has not been announced officially, nor have any reasons for it been given. It also affects the DVD releases of 'Monsoon Wedding and 'Wings of Desire' ('Howards End' had been released on DVD in 2005). The four titles scheduled for release September 22 ('Pierrot le fou', 'The Complete Monterey Pop Festival', 'Monterey Pop' and 'Jimi Plays Monterey & Shake! Otis at Monterey') don't change dates. Likewise, 'Gomorrah' is still scheduled for November 24. http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3431

HollywoodGolightly
Ah, but it doesn't come with a separate sing-along DVD, right? At any rate, much of the appeal of the UK blu-ray (at least to me) is that it doesn't come in a big box, just a regular case.

filmlover
from blu-ray.com: Spanish site Planeta HD is reporting that Warner Home Video is remastering the 1981 movie *Clash of the Titans*, based on the mythological story of Perseus, for its release on Blu-ray to tie in with the remake directed by Louis Leterrier, which is expected to open theatrically in March 2010. filmlover
With regards to the Kurosawa 25-DVD set, I think some will want to wait for them on Blu since 21 of his titles are being released in three volumes between October and February on Blu-ray in Japan. Currently, they have Japanese subtitles only but I am certain they will reissue them with English subtitles at some point in the future. And since Japan is Region A, which is also the U.S. region, they should be able to play here. Volume 1 of ?Akira Kurosawa The Masterworks Blu-ray Disc Collection? realeses on Oct. 23rd contains Seven Samurai, Kagemusha, Sugata Sanshiro, Tsubaki Sanjuro, The Men Who Tread on the Tiger?s Tail, Zoku Sugata Sanshiro, and The Bad Sleep Well. Volume 2 releases on Dec. 18th contains Yojimbo, Ikiru, Stray Dog, I Live in Fear, Hidden Fortress, The Lower Depths, and Most Beautifully. Volume 3 releases Feb. 19, 2010 contains Drunken Angel, No Regrets for Our Youth, One Wonderful Sunday, Throne of Blood, Dodeskaden, Red Beard, and Heaven and Hell. HollywoodGolightly
It's good to know about the Japanese releases, but I have been collecting Japanese imports since college (when some movies were released exclusively on Japanese laserdiscs) and I have never known any Japanese video company to issue movies with English subtitles. (Usually, the ones that end up getting imported here are the ones that are in English to begin with, and then they may or may not have Japanese subtitles). In any event, I would just as sooner buy the AK-100 set, watch them, and then sell it on amazon and wait until there is a similar set available in blu-ray. I think it could take a while. HollywoodGolightly
I was at Best Buy today and picked up my Snow White steelbook. You basically pick up an empty steelbook when you pay the pre-order ($7.50), then you choose the DVD pack or the blu-ray pack, and hold on to your receipt - you need to present that when you go pick up the movie. It is a pretty nice steelbook, too bad they didn't do the same thing for Pinocchio or Sleeping Beauty.
