Well, it's a good thing I just pre-ordered this one and got the Steelbook packaging.

I love the screencaps - this is one of my favorite Disney animated features, among other things for its early use of 3-strip Technicolor, and the color on the blu-ray edition looks absolutely amazing.

I don't much care for those things they add on the Disney non-widescreen movies to fill up the sides of widescreen TVs, so I'm glad those are still optional.

And at least the dvdbeaver review makes sense of all the extra-fancy editions, which I'm not interested in, but I guess someone else in the forums might be.

*www.dvdbeaver.com has an excellent review of Snow White, comparing the new Blu to the new DVD edition, with lots of screen pictures.*

Hey Filmlover,

Thanks for the link to the review of *Snow White*. I really enjoyed reading it and it is helping to push me over the edge to get the Blu version. And I appreciated them breaking down the various "fancy" editions.

Lynn,

Remember that the 3-disc blu-ray combo will have a copy of the movie on DVD as well - you can't go wrong with that set.

Speaking of dvdbeaver.com, they also have a new review of The Black Shield of Falsworth on blu-ray, it's a UK release but apparently it is region-free:

This is a great opportunity to pick up a good blu-ray that isn't currently available in the U.S. and perhaps won't be for a long time. It's due out tomorrow in the UK and amazon.co.uk has it for ?10.99.

Yes, Holly.

I read through the entire "fancy" edition breakdown and have already made my choice as to which version I will be getting.

But thanks for the reminder.

The oldest film to hit Blu-ray so far will be Battleship Potemkin (1925) when it gets released in Sweden on October 28. Uncertain about extras or if it is region free.

As to Black Shield of Falworth, I have had it on order for a little while and received word on Friday that it and Sunrise have both shipped to me. I will list reviews of both of them and Oz when I get that,

If that's the price, it isn't so bad - but I wonder how much the shipping to America would be.

Anyway, back to Snow White, I took a photo of my steelbook:

I haven't opened it yet, of course, though I'll probably be tempted to do that before the movie is even released.

I didn't bother to mention buying the Snow White casing a couple of weeks ago at BB because I figured no one would be possibly interested in it. But since you are...I had already opened it and saw it contains slots for the two Blus and the DVD. The original Blu package will become just an additional thing on the shelf since there is no room for the package in the case.

Well, not playable in most blu-ray players bought in the U.S. You can still get a multi-region blu-ray player, which is probably not a bad investment if you think you'll be getting a lot of blu-ray movies from overseas.

filmlover,

Thank you for posting the link to the Sunrise review. I have read it with great interest, and I'm very glad to learn that they were able to use new source material (the Czech version that was recently found) for the video transfer.

After reading the review, and checking that this was a region-free blu-ray, I headed over to amazon.co.uk to find out what the price is. I guess ?17.98 seems a bit steep, but worth it, for such a great silent film in a newly remastered blu-ray version. The only thing that keeps me from ordering this one right away is the hope that the price might go down a bit in the next six months or so. If it ever gets to under ?12 or so, I would definitely buy it.

filmlover,

In the thread that you posted a link to, the OP is actually from _October 2008_. That means these boxset was already released, several months ago. It is not an upcoming release at all.

And it was indeed, without English subtitles.

In the UK, Universal Pictures announced an R2 2-Disc Special Edition DVD release of Steven Spielberg?s *1941*. Steven Spielberg's comedy is set in the paranoid Hollywood community during World War Two, when Tinseltown braced itself for an imminent attack by the Japanese just three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

(In the US, the DVD seems to be OOP)
