FrankGrimes
Hi, Edgecliff -- FrankGrimes, Family Video has the Hayworth box set for $41.99 pre order. This is the cheapest pre-order so far. Barnes & Noble is very erratic with their prices. Sometimes you can get bargains from them and sometimes their prices are way out of line. I want this one and NIGHT OF THE HUNTER blu ray. Thank you for letting me know about that. I'm pretty much locked into getting the Rita Hayworth box set at Borders. The only thing I'm unsure about is if they will carry it. They did carry the Kim Novak, Samuel Fuller, and the two film noir box sets from Sony, so I'm guessing Rita will hit their shelves. Borders sells most of their DVDs at list price, so you must be a rewards member and use member coupons to get a good price. They have been offering "40% off" coupons on a fairly regular basis and they also offer "50% off Blu-ray" coupons once in a while. I will also have Borders Bucks (five dollars) to use in January, so I'll be able to get the Rita box set for $32.85. I don't know if you live near a Borders and are a member or not. The Blu-ray deal of "50% off" is very good if you are looking to get newer releases for a cheaper price. And, like I said, they offer "40% off" coupons on a fairly regular basis, so you can usually get a good deal on newer DVD releases, too. Where Borders can't compete is on the titles that have been out for a little while or a long while. Eventually, those titles will be 50% off or more during sales. I'm sure the Rita Hayworth box set will have its days of being 50% off (or more) at Amazon, in the future.

filmlover
I guess I have been in a state of shock from the news of it for a few days and it is only now wearing off, but Sony/Columbia is releasing that Warren Beatty/Dustin Hoffman bomb, Ishtar, on Blu-ray. It has not been released on DVD, and rightly so. The Blu is coming in Jan. Also, just announced Optimum, a UK company, is going to be releasing Michael Powel's controversial Peeping Tom on Blu-ray Nov. 19th. This will be region B locked.

edgeciff
Actually I either goofed or they changed prices on me. Now Amazon has the Hayworth set up for pre-order at $41.99. Actually, FrankGrimes I will wait too and see if this set can be bought cheaper as we get closer to December. I see B&N now has the Hayworth set for $51.99.
FrankGrimes
Amazon just changed the Rita Hayworth box set price today, Edgecliff. A price of $41.99 is about right for a pre-order on a $60 box set. It will eventually see "50% off" at some point next year. So it all depends on when you wish to get it. The film noir box sets are pretty much at those prices, right this minute. The second volume was released just three months ago. So I'd guess by Spring you may see a bigger price drop. It's basically an eight to twelve dollar difference.

CinemaAngel
*Classic Hollywood: Restoring Chaplin gems* October 20, 2010 By Susan King, Los Angeles Times Gone are the grainy, broken silents from the star's Keystone years. A new DVD set showcases the birth of the Tramp. For the first half of the 20th century, Charlie Chaplin was the most famous movie comedian in the world thanks to his endearing Tramp character and the masterpieces he wrote and directed, including "The Gold Rush," "City Lights," "Modern Times" and "The Great Dictator." But every genius has to start somewhere, and for Chaplin that was with the Keystone Film Co., where he honed his craft and created his iconic character ? the baggy-pants, bowler-hatted Tramp. http://articles.latimes.com/2010/oct/20/entertainment/la-et-classic-hollywood-20101020

edgeciff
My answer to this is WHY? All of these films have been released before and there has even been a Reagan box set. Also, the set is a mixed bag with very few good films. With so much in the Warner library yet to be released one wonders who came up with this one. A pass for me!
GuntherToody
"My answer to this is WHY?" -- Because it will sell.
