mateo107
virtually no change to the artwork from the original releases. i'm tempted only with Sunset Boulevard, although i'm still content with the original release and the extras don't look all that enthralling. looks like no mention of Bogie in the Sabrina extras, and some of those features are repeated. edgeciff
With so many great DVD's coming this fall I am going to pass on these Paramount re-do's. I am content with my copies especially the Special Edition of SUNSET BOULEVARD. Just to receive a few extras that weren't on the first release isn't enough to tempt me. One can just rent the reissues just to watch the new extras, why spend extra money!. Why doesn't Paramount go back into their library and release such films as SAMSON AND DELILAH, LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER and PLEASURE OF HIS COMPANY instead of recycling the same films over and over again? . Personally, I'm not generally terribly eager to see new artwork - call me old-fashioned, but I don't see anything wrong with using the same artwork. Better to have new content and same old artwork, than no new content and new artwork, imho.

Film_Fatale
Sony is re-packaging/re-issuing/double dipping some of its catalog titles: Sony has also set a pair of DVD box sets for release on 11/18. The first is a 6-disc set that includes *Monty Python and the Holy Grail*, *Monty Python's Life of Brian* and *Monty Python's Meaning of Life* (SRP TBA). The other is a 17-disc Columbia Best Pictures Collection (SRP also TBA), that includes *It Happened One Night* (1934), *You Can't Take It with You* (1938), *All the King's Men* (1949), *From Here to Eternity* (1953), *On the Waterfront* (1954), *The Bridge on the River Kwai* (1957), *Lawrence of Arabia* (1962), *A Man for All Seasons* (1966), *Oliver!* (1968), *Kramer vs. Kramer* (1979) and *Gandhi* (1982). Also in digitalbits.com, Barrie Maxwell has a few words to say about the inclusion of previously-released titles in sets along with new releases that are only available in the sets. This forces collectors who want the new titles to either double dip or forego the titles entirely, at least until hopefully the new titles get a separate release at some undefined future date. The current chief culprits of this odious practice are Universal and MGM with Fox implicated somewhat because of their association with the latter. Even Warner Bros., who declared it would not indulge in the practice, has gone back on its word with the forthcoming November 11th re-release of the WHV Holiday Collection Volume 1 that will now include The Singing Nun. He also pointed out that Criterion's latest newsletter hints that Douglas Sirk's Magnificent Obsession (1954) is in the company's release plans. Such hints usually come to fruition within about 6 months of appearing. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/barriemaxwell/maxwell090808.html

TripleHHH
I pre-ordered Fox Classics 2 for a friend of mine and myself..only 13.99 at Amazon I totally agree with Barnie at the bits, that being said I asked my mother to buy the Abbott & Costello Box Set for my Birthday Universal did the same thing with the Incredible Hulk TV series, they are releasing Season 5, and an awesome looking box set with all 5 seasons, which sucks if you have bought the other 4 already like me.. I found the A&C set a lot more attractive than the volumes and I think the DVDs will be easier to get to as far as the sleeves they are in, but I love that trunk case they are all in... filmlover
Back on August 14th, I mentioned that "Timeless Media plans a September 23rd release of Lee Marvin's 1957-60 M Squad - The Very Best Of. It's a 14-disc set that contains 100 episodes, all of the show's 117 episodes that Timeless has been able to get a hold of. The company is still trying to find viable copies of the missing 17 episodes and they will be included if possible." Well, it looks like they have found them. Amazon now has it listed for sale as a 15-DVD set (and a bonus CD of The Music from M Squad) with the title of *M Squad - The Complete Series*, and that it contains 117 shows. Streetprice $119.98. The release date will be November 11. edgeciff
Hopefully, these are released in slim cases like the JAMES STEWART COLLECTION. As usual Universal is quite stingy with extras. CelluloidKid
I posted this in "Hot Topics" to! *September 11, 2008* *Online retailer Amazon.com has pulled out their price-trimming scissors again, shaving a few more dollars off The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Blu-ray Disc set.* *When Amazon first listed the highly sought after set a few months ago, the price was just under $100, or roughly 33% off the $124.99 list price which is standard for Amazon pricing.* *Slowly but surely Amazon has trimmed a dollar here and a dollar there off the pre-order price approaching the set's September 23 release.* *The latest, and our guess is last price cut brings the total for all three remastered Godfather films on Blu-ray down to a mere $61.95, or 50% off the original list price. That's an offer you can't refuse.* *Click here to pre-order The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Set on Blu-ray for $61.95 from Amazon.com.*

As usual Universal is quite stingy with extras. At least they could have either had some commentary for some of the first time DVD release films in this box set. I'd prefer slim cases at all times, so I'm really glad when they do, in fact, use them. My main concern now is that some studios are obviously going to keep releasing old DVDs in the old size case and Blu-Ray discs in the new smaller case, and unless you put them in different shelves, it's going to look a bit weird. Like with Criterion titles, for example. Some of their titles are being upgraded to Blu-Ray and yet many others continue to be released on regular DVD. The spine numbers aren't being changed for DVDs that are re-issued as BR's. Well, it's really just a small quibble, but sometimes I think it would make things so much easier and simpler if every single DVD and BR came in cases of identical sizes. Film_Fatale
DVDTimes has posted additional details about the Murnau/Borzage at Fox set: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=68876 Fox Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Murnau, Borzage and Fox DVD Collection on 9th December 2008 priced at $239.98 SRP. This 12-film collection aims to capture the iconic careers of directors F.W. Murnau and Frank Borzage during their time at Fox Studios in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Amongst the films included are newly remastered versions of Murnau?s Sunrise and Borzage?s 7th Heaven, as well as an all-new feature length documentary from filmmaker John Cork. Additionally, the set features two exclusive hard-cover books showcasing rare, unpublished photos from the careers of both filmmakers, one of which focuses solely on Murnau?s lost film 4 Devils More detail follows on this collection of films (of which there are no announced individual releases)? While his career was cut short due to a fatal auto accident in 1931 at the age of 42, the impact of F.W. Murnau on the film community can still be felt to this day. Heralded by his contemporaries such as John Ford, Allan Dwan, William Wellman, Howard Hawks and Raoul Walsh during his time at the studio, William Fox brought the expressionist director from Germany to Hollywood after he saw his 1924 film The Last Laugh. This collection includes two surviving works that Murnau made with Fox from 1927-1930 including the beautifully filmed, three-time Oscar winner Sunrise (1927) starring Janet Gaynor and George O?Brien and the country set, marital crisis City Girl (1930). Murnau?s lost, and perhaps most famous work 4 Devils (1928) is also paid tribute with a featurette and all-new book focused on the film as well as a look at the screenplay and more. Also included is the rarely seen European silent alternate version of Sunrise, restored by the Nardoni Filmovy Archiv. Frank Borzage?s career at Fox lasted only seven years, but it would be the silent films he helmed at the studio that would come to define his career as he won the first Best Director Oscar for 7th Heaven and again in 1931 for Bad Girl. Ten of Borzage?s surviving films are featured in the collection including the melodramatic love story 7th Heaven (1927), another triple-Oscar winner at the inaugural ceremony also starring Janet Gaynor. Borzage would go on to collaborate with Gaynor two more times at Fox; as a spirited young woman who joins a traveling carnival in Street Angel (1928) and as a young farm girl who falls in love with a soldier during World War I in Lucky Star (1929). Other featured Borzage works include Lazybones (1925), They Had To See Paris (1929), two versions of Song O? My Heart (1930), Liliom (1930), Bad Girl (1931), After Tomorrow (1932), Young America (1932) and a reconstruction of the lost film The River (1929). Lastly, Murnau, Borzage & Fox (2008) is a feature length documentary by filmmaker John Cork examining the early history of Fox films and studio head William Fox and his patronage of German expressionist F.W. Murnau. In turn, Murnau?s cinematic styles would influence Fox?s stable of directors including Frank Borzage, John Ford and Raoul Walsh. *Lazybones* (1925) ?
