Two things I noticed buried in the article are:

1. 12 more sets will follow in 2010 after these 15 sets in 2009; and

2. 2010 will also have the first Blu-ray releases in the line. I suspect those will consist of Gigi, An American in Paris, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, and Ben-Hur which are due out in 2009. (by the way, there is a Blu release of An American in Paris that has hit Japan so far and DVDBeaver gave it a great review, saying it "borders on spectacular" and "No Blu-ray library should be complete without this":

I also noticed the annual revenue total that studios supposedly make from classic movies

on DVD: *$450M*. I had no idea it was that high! So they really should be raking through

their archives for new stuff all the time.

Two of the sets seem centered on a particular star, though they are labeled "Romantic Comedies"

(Kate Hepburn) and "Greatest Classic Movies: Westerns" (John Wayne). I do hope the second

Westerns box in the picture has at least a couple of Coops and maybe some Anthony Mann? :)

I'm glad they will be made available in stores like Target and Walmart, it's about time.

It does sound like a pretty good figure. And it makes you wonder why studios like Universal, Paramount and Columbia aren't doing more to release classic titles on DVD.

*Keaton classic heads list of vintage releases*

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 3:08 AM

Vintage films -- from a silent-screen classic to some of the best romantic comedies of the 1950s -- come to the small screen this week in new DVD releases.

The highlight is a stunning two-disc edition of _The General_ (1927), Buster Keaton's silent Civil War action-comedy about a Confederate railroad engineer who chases a locomotive abducted by Yankee spies ($29.95, not rated). The high-definition print cleans up and corrects some deterioration in the original film negative.

Many movie experts, including Orson Welles in an introduction, have noted that Keaton's imagery more closely resembles the Civil War photographs of Matthew Brady than any other film about the period.

Keaton's visual humor makes The General a joy to watch more than 80 years after its release. The actor known as the "great stone face" engages in one daring and inventive gag after another, doing his own amazing stunts while riding on top, in the back and on the sides of a speeding locomotive.

The DVD comes with three musical scores, a history of the locomotive (known as the General) used in the movie, a tour of locations in Oregon where the film was shot and a funny montage of scenes from throughout Keaton's career.

In keeping with its ongoing commitment to retrieving and presenting classic films from its nearly 100-year history, Paramount Home Entertainment has launched a new line of digitally mastered and restored DVDs called the Paramount Centennial Collection. Titles in the Paramount Centennial Collection have undergone processes using the latest digital technology for pristine presentations, and most will include new bonus features. Debuting today (11/11/2008) , the first three titles in the collection are _Roman Holiday_ (1953), _Sunset Boulevard_ (1950) and _Sabrina_ (1954).

*All three films are available in a 2-disc set, including an 8-page collectible booklet*

The Murnau-Borzage set from Fox releases after the end of the Deep Discount sale, and I haven't been able to calculate a price below $167 any way I cut it at any online store. Has anyone else seen any good deals for this set that cut the price down to size?

For instance, last year some innovative fellow over at DVD Talk came up with a way to snag Ford at Fox for roughly one hundred dollars at Barnes and Noble by combining discounts. Any help along this line would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't know if this belonged on Upcoming Releases or the Sales thread, so I figured I'd just post here.

you could always hope that somebody with disposable income will buy it for you for Christmas, then you don't have to care how much it cost. personally, i don't think i'd even get it at $100, though, since 'm only casually interested in some of the movies so i doubt there's any other way i would get that set.

Also today, this would normally go in The Rumor Mill (so salt it accordingly), but industry sources are telling us that Sony will release Gandhi on Blu-ray Disc in early 2009. The title is tentatively set for release on 2/19 in the U.K. but we're told that this date is not set in stone. Expect the U.S. release around the same time. The key thing to know that it IS coming in early 2009.

Im not investing in BluRay at this time. I think BluRay is more suited for newer movies as opposed to movies from the 80s. Some BluRay reviews have told me that some movies are not improvements just because they are on BluRay . I dont really know. Im still debating. I like my TV, DVD quality for what I watch is really fine for me. I dont feel like turning all my investments from SD into BluRay..

That's why I said that to me, personally, it was worth waiting for Blu-Ray. ;)

There's nothing wrong with looking ahead to upgrading to a Blu-Ray player, the prices are going to be lower than ever this Holiday season because retailers want to move some units, and the players are obviously compatible with SD DVDs.

But that's just for me, personally, not for everybody. B-)

Yep..

If I use a BluRay on this set, the quality wont be BluRay quality as this TV isnt HD. But I like it, the picture for me is fine & the prices are expensive for BluRay. Id also have to get a new TV set (SIGH) for the true conversion. So I think I will wait a while..

Don't worry, HHH, the prices keep coming down all the time and already it looks like this holiday season, we'll be seeing the prices for some Blu-Ray players come very close to what DVD players used to cost just a couple of years ago. As for televisions, well, sooner or later most people will have to get a new TV when the old one dies, and the prices for HDTVs will also have come down considerably, to where you can probably get a set under 40 inches for $600 or less. So, I think it is just going to be a matter of time before most people upgrade. B-)

*Black Narcissus* (1946), which has been available in England on Blu-ray already, is getting its U.S. Blu-ray distribution on Tuesday, Nov. 25 (it will be interesting to see if the documentary, "Profile of Black Narcissus" will be in PAL or not). And, as mentioned earlier, *Becket* (1964) will also be released on Blu then, too.
