Yikes! That would be a shame since they have been gaining on WHV on the quality of their great classic releases and boxed sets. Going to one per year would be like pulling the plug. Is this supposed to start in 2009 or 2010?

One thing about Fox I've never been able to figure out though. They have their own movie channel yet they repeat their recent offerings (post 1980) over and over and show a few of their classics in the early morning hours. Why did they need to get TCM to promote their Ford at Fox set when they could have done it themselves?

film fatale, classicflix.com has announced "No word on the other upcoming Fox titles previously mentioned (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Man Hunt & Stars and Stripes Forever), but we've just learned about a solid March 17th release date for the Historical Epic The Robe - Special Edition (1953) in Standard & Blu-Ray format. No additional details are available except that the SD version should have both the CinemaScope and Flat version. And although we list the SD version as a 2-Disc set and the BD as a single disc, those details have not yet been verified."

Actually a contact i have that works on extras for different studios, he said there is a RUMOR that Fox is going to severely cut back on classics. This is not really a shocker, as we can all see what's going on across the board at all studios. The only drastic reductions we're NOT seeing is in Blu Ray production. The releases i'm actually anticipating the most is with Sony (some Capra/Stanwyck releases and also Neil Simon), but it's frustrating to know any of them are cutting back. Fox released some great stuff last year at very reasonable prices, that Western 3 pack mentioned on this site being one of them..

First half of 2009? I would say that's wildly optimistic. We haven't had it this bad since the Great Depression. I'll be very happy if the economy comes out of recession by 2010.

I spend lots of money on DVD's so if there is a cutback that will be less monies I will be spending on DVD's. I have pre-ordered several titles already: MAGNIFICENT OBESSSION, WATERLOO BRIDGE, SABOTAGE, PARADINE CASE, HELEN MORGAN STORY, etc. I did these pre-orders from Family Video who seem to be a bit cheaper than other online sites. And unless prices come down drastically (and I don''t mean a couple of dollars cheaper on sale) or equal the price of SD many people will be staying a way from buying BluRay discs even though we continue to see a heafty release schedule for these discs. If and when I do go Blu Ray I won't be spending hugh sums on these discs unless the prices stablize.

I don't think anyone meant to "lambast" you. Certainly I didn't. Your expectation does seem to be a bit optimistic - but that doesn't mean it is wrong. If we did come out of the recession in the first half of next year, I'd be tickled pink. B-)

Edgecliff - if you shop for sales, sometimes you can get great bargains on blu-rays. I got *The Searchers* for $9.99. And there's also Netflix, getting blu-rays from them only costs an extra $1 a month. ;)

Thank you, Edgecliff.

You were mentioning the UK DVD release of a Douglas Sirk collection the other day, I believe. Well, here's another bit of R2 news for those with multi-region players: Otto Preminger's *The Fan* is coming out soon in the UK:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content/id/69608/the-fan-1949-bfi-in-january.html

BFI have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Fan on 26th January 2009. After many years abroad, Mrs Erlynne returns to a London much changed by the ravages of war. Whilst at an auction she recognizes an attractive fan which once belonged to her but before she can claim it she must find another party to vouch for her. Seeking out Lord Darlington, her only acquaintance left remaining in London, the pair soon begin a journey of memory, love, loss and sacrifice.

Featuring George Sanders, Madeleine Carroll and Jeanne Crain and co-adapted by the legendary Dorothy Parker, Otto Preminger?s 1949 version of Oscar Wilde?s Lady Windermere?s Fan comes to DVD with the following features:

* 4:3 with English Mono audio and optional HOH subtitles

* Lady Windermere?s Fan (1916) ? Fred Paul?s silent version of Wilde?s play (65 mins)

* Illustrated booklet

Thanx for the info Film Fatale. Sure wish FOX would release this one in the US. Not sure if I have ever seen this film before. Madeline Carroll who I think is extraordinarily beautiful, is one of my favorite actresses. A very classy lady of which there are none today in film.

Well you can always check http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/ - this site is based in the UK, as you can see in the web address, but they report on major releases in the US, too.

Also, you can browse the DVD section at amazon.co.uk. B-)

> digitalbits.com is now reporting there was an error in their Rumor Mill yesterday. It is not The Sound of Music coming to Blu. It is South Pacific. Off all the R&H films, that would have been the one I would have picked last to transfer to Blu The film was a mess, that poor use of color filters. And I don't see why they picked SP, as there would be more money if they had gone with The Sound of Music.

I found the cover art for *South Pacific* on blu-ray:

*_Raging Bull_ Slugs It Up to Blu-ray on February 10th, 2009!*

Source: Fox Home Entertainment

December 12th, 2008

You can finally see on of the premiere collaborations between Robert De Niro and Martin Scorcese in high definition this coming February. Raging Bull will be released on Blu-ray on Februray 10. The disc will be priced at $34.99 SRP. The film stars Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty.

Robert DeNiro teams with director Martin Scorsese in this "extraordinarily compelling" (Leonard Maltin) film that introduced unflinching realism to stunned audiences in 1980. An "exceedingly violent as well as poetic" fight picture that maps "the landscape of the soul" (The New York Times), Raging Bull garnered eight Oscar? nominations* and won two, including Best Actor for DeNiro. DeNiro gives the performance of his career as Jake LaMotta, a boxer whose psychological and sexual complexities erupt into violence both in and out of the ring. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are unforgettable as the brother who falls prey to Jake's mounting paranoia and jealousy, and the fifteen-year-old girl who becomes his most prized trophy. A "brilliantly photographed film of extraordinary power and rare distinction" (The Wall Street Journal), Raging Bull is filmmaking at its riveting best.

Special Features:

- Commentary by Director Martin Scorsese and Editor Thelma Schoonmaker

- Cast & Crew Commentary - Irwin Winkler, Robbie Robertson, Robert Chartoff, Theresa Saldana, John Turturro, Frank Warner, Michael Chapman and Cis Corman
