jakeem
The South American director Héctor Babenco has died at the age of 70. In 1986, he became the first Latin American filmmaker to receive an Academy Award nomination as Best Director. It was for the 1985 movie "Kiss of the Spider Woman," which earned William Hurt a Best Actor Oscar. The film -- about two political prisoners in a Brazilian prison -- also received Oscar nods for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (Leonard Schrader, from the novel by Manuel Puig). Babenco also directed the 1987 film version of "Ironweed," the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by William Kennedy. The screen adaptation starred Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep as a homeless couple during the Depression era. Both stars were nominated for Academy Awards.
