Dells
A girl is running late for rehearsal, and she is in a musical. She runs out in front of a limo (and possibly gets hit by it or almost hit by it) The limo takes her to the set just in time. The limo driver doesn't tell his boss that he picked her up. When she's dropped off at the studio, the other people who work there see her getting out of the limo and know whose it is. Then, they get the mistaken impression that the owner of the limo is her boyfriend. Because of this, they give her the best part in the musical and treat her really good. The owner of the limo finds out I think because of the publicity she's getting as being engaged to him. She later meets the rich guy they think she's dating, but she doesn't know who he really is. He figures out what is going on, but doesn't let on who he is. He falls in love with her. They're in a restaurant, and it's hard for him not to accidentally get discovered because lots of people recognize him. He wants to tell her who he is, but it becomes more difficult for him. I saw it on TCM a long time ago, and want to try and find it again.

Dells
That is the movie. I've been trying to remember what it was for a long time now. Thanks a bunch!!! It's playing January 17th. What great timing. It's one of those movies that's really good that you don't hear a lot about. Thanks again!

skribbler
If it is the David Niven movie, it parallels how he actually got into the movie business. He'd met Douglas Fairbanks in New York while he was on leave from the British Army, decided he'd try his hand at acting, but when Niven arrived in Hollywood he found out there's a difference between being a guest and a job seeker. Fairbanks saw Niven standing outside United Artists looking for work as an extra, invited him into his limo, and later over a good hot steam concocted a plot to get Sam Goldwyn to hire Niven, which he did, sight unseen. Niven was signed to a seven-year contract and never looked back. Goldwyn signed Niven because he saw Niven with Fairbanks and pal Darryl Zanuck. Fairbanks convinced Goldwyn he had to act fast or Zanuck would sign him first. It all started with a limo...

mbmuva
I caught the January showing of Happy Go Lovely and loved it. I think it's a gem that's sadly forgotten. There are some wonderful musical numbers and David Niven is a delight.
