Stranded! On an island...

Ok, this thread was started a while back but I figure I'll go anew rather than digging it back up! Some newer folks are here so we'll see what we get... :)

Ok, your bi-plane sputters to a slow stop mid way over the Pacific Ocean, making an abrupt nose dive into the sea. Somehow you survive, crawling amazingly out of the seaweed ridden water with nothing but your dvd player and a stack of ten dvds. What are they?

Here are mine:

One Way Passage

Top Hat I must confess, just for "Cheek to Cheek"

Singin' In The Rain just for "Moses Supposes" with >Donald O'Connor

Night Must Fall

My Man Godfrey if for nothing else> Carlo's Gorilla impression

High Society

The Westerner for Gary Cooper and only Gary Cooper!

Road to Rio

We're Not Dressing

And I would have to have one Marx Bros. film... Probably Night At The Opera just for Chico's performance "All I do the whole night through..." on the piano.

Death Becomes Her

The Mummy

Creature From The Black Lagoon

Funny Face

12 Angry Men

Pillow Talk

I would be terribly missing "Weekend In Havana", "Fantastic Voyage", "Cyrano De Bergerac"(1950) and "The Out Of Towners"(1970).

Here is my list:

The Kid - Charlie Chaplin

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921) - Rudolph Valentino

The African Queen - Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn

Captain Blood - Errol Flynn, Olivia deHavilland, Basil Rathbone

My Man Godfrey - William Powell, Carole Lombard

Ball of Fire - Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck

All This and Heaven Too - Charles Boyer, Bette Davis

Yankee Doodle Dandy - James Cagney

Valley of Decision - Gregory Peck, Greer Garson

Doctor Zhivago - just cus I love this movie

With the above films, I get almost all of my favorite actors and actresses in some of their best roles, plus a mix of humor, drama, epic, and musical.

Now, if I could just figure out how to get Spencer Tracy, Myrna Loy and Montgomery Clift in there (without taking Lonelyhearts, which is okay but not my favorite film by either of them), I'd be set. :P

Why most certainly! ;)

Honorable mention for me would have to be any other Gary Cooper flick... Like Saratoga Trunk or For Whom the Bell Tolls. And Road to Morocco. I prefer Rio but it would be a shame to go the rest of my life without hearing "Ho-hum" or seeing Bing, Bob, and Dorothy swap voices for "Moonlight Becomes You."

Thank you kindly, sir! In that case I would have to name My Man Godfrey, The Awful Truth, Holiday, and all the other screwball comedies of the 30's. I am particularly fond of this genre and would consider these films a "must" in order to sustain a sense of humor while waiting to be rescued. ;^)

It's the thought that counts, MovieGal! ;)

I love screwball comedies as well... There are many ones that people think are the "ultimate" screwball comedy. I think in agreement with you... My Man Godfrey is the best.

Alot of the guys on here call me a "him" and alot of the gals call me "her!" and then sometimes it just gets switched around, lol. But I am a "she" just for the record... :D Thus my attraction to Bob Hope is further realized>>>

Brad, I'm a Barbara Stanwyck fan as well, and those are three of my very favorites among her films. One of the three ("Ball of Fire") is already on my list, but I'd definitely have "Meet John Doe" and "Double Indemnity" on the honorable mention list as well!

I could watch any of those three films over and over, and never tire of them.

Other 'honorable mention' films, for me, would be

The Gold Rush

The Eagle

The Charge of the Light Brigade

Mr Deeds Goes to Town

Double Wedding (I think I like these Powell/Loy film even better than The Thin Man.

Desk Set

Casablanca (I really don't need to take it though, as I pretty much have the whole thing memorized)

To Have or Have Not

Ooooo... Can I answer this one? William Powell would be one, because he's so smart and handsom... But would he be able to rough it out? Gene Kelly might be able to take the situation on a little better... Or Humphrey Bogart. But I don't find Bogart attractive... I'll stick with Powell! lol ;)

I have my solar powered DVD player and lots of time because I probably have no hope of getting off the island. Here goes:

1. My Man Godfrey.

2. Duck Soup.

3. The Bridge On The River Kwai.

4. It's A Wonderful Life

5. Easy Living (Jean Arthur)

6. Palm Beach Story.

7. The Quiet Man

8. Holiday

9. Silverado

10. The Searchers. (Hoping someone will be searching for me.)

As long as we're in a fantasy mode I'd like to be stranded with Jean Arthur. Then nobody has to come and get me.

Speaking of GarboManiac, where oh where did he go? I've been tempted to post a eulogy for him on the "Gone Without Fanfare" thread. I miss his wit, his unassuming erudition, and--most of all--his lovely pictures of Garbo and Lamarr. (*pouts*).
