Does Anyone Remember This One?

It is a movie set in upstate New York, either Ithica or Utica, during World War Two. As I recall it is a coming of age movie for a young boy living there. One scene that I particularly remember involves the telegram delivery boy who has to take a message of one of the home town boys killed over to his fiance (or wife). It was taken from a best selling novel that I believe most of us had to read in High School during the 60's.

It was a classic and it is driving me absolutely nuts that I cannot remember the title. Any help would be appreciated.

Since all of you you were so kind to give me the title I went and read the synopsis and found out the movie was actually set in Ithaca, California. Heck, after all of these years I always thought it was in New York. No wonder no one knew what I was talking about. So thanks again.
