Too bad all that rain won't get far enough West to do them some good.

Tropical storms / hurricanes can only  travel far as the midwest before dissipating and then due to prevailing trade winds travel east.

Why do hurricanes hit the East Coast of the U.S. but never the West Coast?

The west requires Pacific storms but high pressure can block and steer them to a different direction.

True.  I don't recall ever hearing of a TYPHOON ( what hurricanes are called in the Pacific) making landfall on our west coast.

It's the coldness of the water off the US west coast that kills off hurricanes in the Pacific.

There's only been 4 storms since 1900 with at least tropical storm strength to affect California:  1939, Joanne (1972), Kathleen (1976) and Nora (1997)

All but the first actually made landfall in Baja California.  The 1939 storm came ashore at Long Beach.
