Recommended Posts

Thanks for the information guys.

The Criterion titles are great choices, and the Pre-code set is an excellent buy.

I took advantage of the sale last month.

Also for anyone interested, Amazon is offering the Bette Davis box set volumen 3, Stanley Kramer Collection, Errol Flynn Signature volumen 2, and Errol Flynn Western Collection for less than

$ 20.00

Barnes and Noble has a 40% off on all Blu-rays through the 24th.

Check around the internet and you may come up with 30% and 25% discounts. Sometimes the codes have been used but f you print it out and give it to the cashier, they may be nice and just type in the code or %. As they say, your mileage may vary. I tried it today and the cashier couldn't get it to scan but ended typing in the discount amounts and I got the Criterion Blu-ray titles of The Lady Vanishes for $16.79 and 12 Angry Men for 17.99.

For those who have Blu-ray or are considering it, Best Buy will be doing another of its trade-in ANY DVD you have (must be a studio DVD with case) and get $5 off a Blu-ray, starting Jan. 8th. What is different this time is that instead of there being a limited number of titles that you could get under the program, you can get $5 off ANY Blu-ray that is $9.99 or higher (except music titles).

Here are the details:

Bring in your original DVD (no burned copies accepted) with the original case to Customer Service and receive a $5-off coupon valid on any Blu-ray movie priced $9.99 and up. Excludes Blu-ray music titles. See a Customer Specialist or visit BestBuy.com/upgradeandsave for more details about the Upgrade & Save promotion. Limit 5 coupons per trip. A recycling receipt must accompany the coupon at time of redemption. Once you have received your coupon, if you do not find a Blu-ray, you are unable to get your turned-in DVD back. Not valid with any other discount or package. Markdown taken from original price. Your original DVD must have been commercially packed and with the original case. Adult content DVDs not accepted. Though they are not officially out until Tuesday, some people have found Notorious, Spellbound, and Rebecca on Blu-ray at some Costco's (not all) at $9.99 each. (Amazon is $16.99 each.)

Update: They are at Costco in Burbank right now. Picked all three up.

Yeah, I know, everyone is complaining about it. I tried for an hour and a half going back and forth on pages, and eventually getting to moving through the checkout pages but then back it would send me. I finally gave up. It isn't worth it. (And you can't use the discount on pre-orders, unfortunately.)

Filmlover, thanks for that info. Was not going to buy the clunky box set but at this price who could resist. Don't like these boxes since they take up too much room.

BTW, have you bought the BR of ONE EYED JACKS? I sold my sealed copy to someone out of town and they can't get it to play in the English mode, only German voices come on. Don't know why this is happening. I know you need to turn off the other languages to work. Do you have any info to help or any other person reading this can help?

Talk about great timing. I was in Amoeba over the weekend and picked up the German release of One-Eyed Jacks ("...Noche Hange Ich Nicht") for $5.99. The American release also works from this German print and German is the default audio. There are two simple ways to get to English audio.

1. on the main menu of the Blu, click on SETUP and it will give you the choice of German or English. Make sure ENGLISH is in red, not white, and click on it. That will switch it to English.

2. the other way to do it is to simply use the button on his remote that says "AUDIO". It will switch it to English.

This Blu, though, has a pretty bad video. So if he is disenchanted, tell him this is a small company that issued it because it is in the public domain, and not indicative of regular Blus.

Film.lover, Thanks for the info. I already passed it on to him. I did not even open the sealed BR when I read how bad the print was, I just decided to sell it right away. THE RED HOUSE with Edw. G. Robinson is coming shortly in BR, I hope this one is not bad too. All the prints that are around are dreadful. But I don't know how a company could release a dismal copy on BR. This one is a great film, so I will keep my fingers crossed but wait until reviews come out before I purchase it.

I was looking around Amazon and came across a couple of excellent deals of "4 Movie Marathon" sets issued by Universal. You can do a search on Amazon and see various collections they have. Some run about $9.99 but I found two that are excellent for their money:

4 Movie Marathon: Classic Western Collection (Albuquerue/Whispering Smith/Duel At Silver Creek/War Arrow) $5.99

http://www.amazon.com/Movie-Marathon-Collection-Albuquerque-Whispering/dp/B004GSVX8A/ref=sr_1_3?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1330751981&sr=1-3

4 Movie Marathion: Classic War Collection (Wake Island/To Hell and Back/Battle Hymn/Gray Lady Down) $5.49

http://www.amazon.com/Four-Movie-Marathon-Classic-Collection-Island/dp/B004GSVXBW/ref=pd_bxgy_mov_img_b

The prices go up and down but they are generally returning to the above. Worth getting.
