Special Sales of Classic Titles on DVD & Blu-ray

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Oldies.com continues it's half price sale on Alpha DVDs but not sure how long it's running for. They have flat rate $5.95 shipping and titles are $3.99. I don't see paying full price for these so I had a backlog as they do come up with some otherwise unavailable precode titles.

Here's the three I ordered:

Flirtation (1934) Saliant Pictures

Technically a post-code (November 1934) but you wouldn't know it from the cover art. This one also includes the bonus short Everything's Ducky (October 1934) w/Joyce Compton which made it a no-brainer purchase for me.

The Talk of Hollywood (1929) from Prudence Pictures (ironically enough) - this one is bizarre from what I've read and politically incorrect with lots of ethnic (and other) stereotypes.

The plot? Think, Singin' in the Rain - a producer attempts to convert to sound and make a musical.

According to Oldies site, "The gag sequence featuring incorrectly synchronized voices - women with men's voices and such - is said to have inspired the famous sequence in Singin' In The Rain twenty-two years later."

Also, interestingly, "was shot at Manhattan's RCA Photophone Studios located at 130 Park Avenue. A day after the theatrical release of The Talk of Hollywood, the studio would burn to the ground due to Kleig lights setting aflame the cloth that was used to sound proof the walls from the noise of the busy N.Y. streets."

Sensation Hunters (1933) Monogram Pictures

Starring Arline Judge & Preston Foster, directed by Charles Vidor.

More spicy (and misleading) cover art but this one is quite tame supposedly.

Mixed bag as usual from oldies.com...

Ordered with paypal as I've had trouble with their checkout in the past and rec'd the pkg very quickly - had it just a few days after ordering.

I'm going to avoid reviewing the print quality and content of any of the three titles except to say I did preview them briefly and Sensation Hunters looks like a cute little movie. It's supposed to have quality musical numbers for a poverty row studio like Monogram Pictures.

And add that all three DVDs have the same aliasing (horizontal lines accompanying motion in this case) problems from poor transfer. It's a shame these films survive (in varying condition) but then Alpha does a poor transfer.

Also I wasn't aware they've switched over to DVD-R since I made my last Alpha purchase, Dance, Girl, Dance (1933) with Evalyn Knapp (sourced from The Samuel M. Sherman Archives), about a year ago. I recommend Dance, Girl, Dance as one of their best precodes, btw.

One minor correction from my last post:

According to IMdB, Flirtation was produced by Saliant Pictures

but seems it's actually _Salient_ Pictures.

Wait...you're coming in here to correct me about that, when you can buy the Tyrone Power DVD set it is in for about $15? I've been posting sale prices for several years, as well as providing much of the new release news. As a matter of fact, I got the entire Classic FIlm DVD Reviews forum created in the first place...and it seems lately that you are trying to take it over.

Since when is providing additional titles and info correcting someone?

Which info I was posting not for you but the readers of this thread.

That's why we post here, right? To share information - to read and be read?

You obviously know it's a BR title as you've seen their ad and posted a link to the product. It makes little sense I'd try to inform you of this fact.
