jinsinna13
James Van Der Beek and Joshua Jackson should've been big movie stars. Sure, Van Der Beek had Varsity Blues and Jackson had The Mighty Ducks and The Skulls, but they should've been in the same league as their Dawson's Creek co-stars Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams.

Several cast members of Cheers tried to transition to the big screen, and most of them met with limited success. Part of the problem is they become typecast as the characters they play on a hit TV series. So the audience has a tough time accepting them in other roles, or playing opposite other performers. This is probably why a lot of soap stars fail to become movie stars. If Susan Lucci had tried to do roles played by Meryl Streep, she was not going to succeed because she was too identified with All My Children and no matter what she did, the audience was still going to view her as Erica Kane. So that worked against her and limited her to television work.

Yes, they did have some big screen success, but it was limited. They really struggled to shed their TV persona. Ultimately Selleck just went back to TV.

ronnoco28
Gallipoli came out in 1981, and starred Mel Gibson (Frank) and Mark Lee (Archie). Mel went on to become a major movie star and producer, although his career went downhill after he made some anti-semitic remarks a number of years ago. But Mark Lee seems never to have appeared in a major film again, although he's had a full career acting in Australian television right down to the present. He did appear in some obscure films which can be seen on old VHS tapes.

ronnoco28
Jimmy Wlcek was a young actor who started out in the late 1980s on the soap-opera Ryan's Hope, where he was a handsome young dreamboat. He also had a small role in Steel Magnolias. Soon afterwards, he guest-starred on the primetime network show Walker: Texas Ranger, where he was able to show off his physique, and his martial-arts skills. This led to him getting his own primetime show, Sons of Thunder, which only lasted for 5 episodes. Afterwards, he had some decent guest-starring roles , but as time passed, these became scarce. He now apparently does somewhat obscure television or dvd movies. According to IMDB, he's married with 2 kids.
TopBilled
I've been watching episodes of the old NBC daytime soap Texas (1980-82) on YouTube. This show had some gorgeous looking men. Most of them did not do much after the show ended, occasionally other soap roles before fading from view.

txfilmfan
Steve(n) Lyon was featured in Campus Man in the late 80s. He was a model at the time. He might still be, but he spends a lot of his time behind the camera as a photographer.
jinsinna13
We've talked about athletes (mainly Mitch Gaylord and Kurt Thomas) who failed to become movie stars but never about singers. Nick Carter is a member of the Backstreet Boys and has been with the group since he was 13. He is also by far the most handsome member of the group. (Brian Littrell comes in a close second.) Carter also released solo albums and appeared in TV movies, but he never became a movie star like former NSYNC front man, Justin Timberlake.
TopBilled
Yeah, for some reason, not all of them have "what it takes" to become movie stars. And to be fair, a lot of movie stars do not have what it takes to become popular singers.

Nick Jonas is the closest thing to as pop singer- movie star these days and he does more tv shows than movies
jaragon
Trevor Donovan has the All American blonde good looks which in another era would have made him a movie star. He has become a favorite leading in those Hallmark Channel romantic movies. He played a gay character in the rebooted "90210" (2008-20013)
jinsinna13
Happy Birthday to fellow Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell! Like Nick Carter, the curly blonde haired Littrell never became a movie star. The "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" music video is by far the Backstreet Boys sexiest music video. Littrell and Nick Carter also have great chemistry. They're so cute together!
