NipkowDisc
I'd like to see tcm break out Hold Back the Night a great little korean war movie starring john payne with peter graves and chuck connors and directed by allan dwan. a great underrated little war flick. I have a vcd of it but the title is in french 'teufels kommando'. yet another great film that tcm is ignoring like it doesn't even exist... just like (drum roll)...hot spell. "there he goes again." -reagan http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049319/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Nick Danger
An interesting, off-beat war film is THE LAST VALLEY, with Michael Caine, Omar Sherriff, Nigel Davinport, Per Osscarson. Probably one of the only films about the Thirty Years War made outside of Germany. Based on the novel by J.B. Pick, it deals with a wanderer who discovers a high alpine village untouched by the war that had been raging since 1618. (It is 1641, I believe) At the same time, a group of soldiers, led by Caine finds the village also. Tensions between the the solders, peasants, Catholics and Protestants reflects much of what that incomprehensible war was about. Great atmosphere and terrific score by John Barry. 1970
slaytonf
There never was a good war movie, or a bad plea for peace.
Sepiatone
Prety subjective topic. We all have our favorites. And I know a lot of folks who don't like ANY war movies. AND just because some movie or movies are one's favorite(s) doesn't necessarily mean they're any GOOD. But for me, a few of the ones I like are.... ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT SERGEANT YORK BATAAN THE BRAVE AND THE DAMNED PORK CHOP HILL HELL IS FOR HEROES THE LONGEST DAY THE YOUNG LIONS SINK THE BISMARK THE DESERT FOX There's probably a few more I can't come up with at the moment. johnpressman
"All Quiet On The Western Front" "Paths Of Glory" "Westfront 1918" Coincidently, all WW1 movies. TCM Member Stephan was so kind as to provide me with the SILENT version of "All Quiet" as well as introducing me to "Westfront 1918" which is an underrated movie. Sort of a companion to "All Quiet". sewhite2000
I think when most people talk about war movies, they mean movies with lots of battle scenes in them. Generally, most of those movies aren't among my favorites about war. So I'm going to try to present a broader list, not just conventional war movies but also movies about all aspects of war: prison camps, concentration camps, civilian life during war, civilians who aid war effort with activities like gunrunning or hiding refugees, the life of soldiers just before or just after a war. I suppose Casablanca is war film, but I won't stray that far off the path (though I did include To Have and Have Not, which gets closer to the military action). Most of these films are about soldiers or civilians who have some key interaction with soldiers. Okay, here we go, in rough chronological order: 1925 Battleship Potemkin The Big Parade 1927 The General Napoleon 1928 Storm over Asia 1930 All Quiet on the Western Front 1937 Grand Illusion 1939 Gone with the Wind Gunga Din 1941 Sergeant York 1942 To Be or Not to Be 1943 The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp 1944 To Have and Have Not Henry V 1945 The Battle of San Pietro Open City I Know Where I'm Going! 1946 The Best Years of Our Lives Paisan 1952 Forbidden Games 1953 From Here to Eternity 1954 The Wanton Countess 1955 Hill 24 Doesn't Answer 1956 The Burmese Harp 1957 Throne of Blood The Bridge on the River Kwai The Cranes are Flying Paths of Glory 1958 Ashes and Diamonds 1962 Lawrence of Arabia 1963 The Great Escape The Leopard 1964 Dr. Strangelove 1965 Dr. Zhivago The War Game The Battle of Algiers Chimes at Midnight 1967 The Red and the White 1968 Shame In the Year of the Pig 1969 Andrei Rublev 1971 The Sorrow and the Pity 1972 Cabaret 1975 Barry Lyndon 1976 Ascent 1977 Soldier of Orange 1978 The Deer Hunter Dawn of the Dead (well, it's all-out war with zombies) 1979 Apocalypse Now 1980 The Big Red One 1981 The Boat Gallipoli 1982 Yol 1984 The Killing Fields 1985 Ran Shoah Come and See 1986 Salvador Sherman's March 1987 Full Metal Jacket Good Morning, Vietnam Red Sorghum 1988 Grave of the Fireflies 1989 Glory 1990 Europa, Europa 1993 Schindler's List 1995 Braveheart Underground 1996 The English Patient 1998 Saving Private Ryan 1998 The Thin Red Line 1999 Three Kings 2000 Kippur 2001 No Man's Land 2004 Farenheit 9/11 And I'm sure there are other equally worthy inclusions in the past 12 years, The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty and some others, but that's more than enough for one post.
