Laughing Gravy
Hi everyone, I greatly enjoyed this course by revisiting some old favorites and finding more to explore, so I figured I would ask Dr. Edwards and the knowledgeable members of this community for some recommendations. I am particularly looking for good biographies, autobiographies, and film analysis books on: Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, and Laurel & Hardy. I know there is A TON out there so I was wondering if anyone here can share their top picks. My other request has to do with silent film musical scores. I am a classically trained violinist and a passion project of mine that has been percolating for the past few years would be to perform live musical accompaniment to some of the great shorts from the artists listed above for educational purposes with my string quartet. So I'm definitely looking for resources, such as how/where to find/rent original music, getting in touch with established composers like Robert Israel, meeting young composers who might be interested, or even books that detail the criteria behind using public domain music. Again, thanks to Dr. Edwards and everyone involved for making this happen and for giving us a platform to geek out on this wonderful subject. Oh, and thanks in advance to anyone willing to share some info on my requests : )
ln040150
Track down Robert Israel. He has been recording original music for silent film for many years.
Larynxa
Ben Model is another top film accompanist & historian. http://www.silentfilmmusic.com/ He's the one who taught me about the selective use of under- and over-cranking to enhance onscreen movement.
