#Breaking: Loss for Trump as Supreme Court rules against him in NY case over his tax returns.

7-2 opinion, written by Roberts, said that Trump isn’t absolutely immune.

Sends case back to district court to argue it out.

It’s possible the NY prosecutor won’t see it before election

=========================================

-a WIN for basic RULE OF LAW

but with expected cowardly PUNT back to Lower Courts......?

ROBERTS: "We reaffirm that principle today and hold that the President is neither absolutely immune from state criminal subpoenas seeking his private papers

nor entitled to a heightened standard of need."

Has Lt. Col. Vindman said why he is retiring?  I can sympathize with him, but this seems almost foolish to me as his promotion would seem to be assured regardless of what Trump tries to do.  It will cost him (and his survivor) a lot of money.  The retired pay for a full colonel is significantly higher than that of a lt. col.  Also his employment, consultant and other opportunities would be better as a retired colonel.

My latest alongside @NaveedAJamali
:
Alexander Vindman was approved for promotion but submitted his retirement
before a possible partisan battle with President Donald Trump

that may have held up over 1,000 other U.S. military promotions.

I still think the "battle" should have been joined.  In the hopes that it would prove that law is mightier than Trump and to force the military leadership and the Senate to choose between doing the honorable thing and supporting Trump.

An opportunity lost.

The Filthy Air

Trump gives Roger Stone his Get Out of Jail Free card.

"......Stone had let it be known that he might talk if he had to set foot in prison for even a short time. And so he received his get out of jail card on July 10, four days before he was to report to the federal penitentiary.

Stone lied under oath, was convicted by a jury of his peers, was sentenced by a judge—and will never serve a day in prison......

.....Stone freed, and Vindman bullied. That is Donald Trump’s America, where

Fair is foul, and foul is fair:
Hover through the fog and filthy air.

And yet. To return to Macbeth, “we still have judgment here.”

The people will make a judgment on November 3.

But in between election days the people judge through their representatives.........

Trump’s Aberrant Pardons and Commutations:

".......We considered whether Trump’s pardons and commutations can be explained by one or more of four criteria: (1) Did it advance a clear political goal of the president?; (2) Did the person who was pardoned have a personal connection to Trump or someone Trump knows well?; (3) Was the person who was pardoned brought to the President’s attention by television or a television commentator?; (4) Was the pardon based on Trump’s admiration for celebrity? Interpretations in some cases were difficult. We tried to be cautious, and we linked to our sources.

The bottom line: In 31 of the 36 Trump pardons/commutations, at least one (and often more than one) of these criteria were satisfied.........

.....In sum, Trump is unprecedented in the modern era for (i) the number and high percentage of self-serving pardons, and (ii) his stinginess in issuing pardons, at least thus far. Quite a feat. .....

Fmr. Asst. U.S. Attorney Goldman: "If there was any question as to what was on the mind of Roger Stone or what was on the mind of President Trump, Stone cleared it up today when he said he could have flipped on Trump and it would have eased his situation.

trump can't really blame the right-wing media or the right wing people for not being excited about Roger Stone's pardon.

Because after all, Roger Stone wasn't going to flip on them. :o⚖️

On a positive note, since we are also barring foreigners don't have to worry about IMPORTING any more viruses.

But less air travel means less exhaust, less global warming.  (and less globalism)

Now lets see how the GW alarmist respond to this DOWN SIDE of the equation. :D

POWER, APPEARANCE, AND OBSCENITY: FIVE REFLECTIONS
Slavoj Žižek BY SLAVOJ ŽIŽEK

ONE: The New Obscene Master

The obscene public space that is emerging today changes the way the opposition between appearance and rumor works. It is not that appearances no longer matter since obscenity reigns directly; it is, rather, that spreading obscene rumors or acting obscenely paradoxically sustain the appearance of power. Things are in a way similar to what happened in the last decades with the figure of detective in crime fiction: he or she can be crippled, half-crazy, or whatever, but his/her authority as the infallible detective remains untouched. In the same way, a political leader can act in undignified ways, make obscene gestures, etc., but all this, by contrast, strengthens his position of a master.

It is similar with Trump who surprises us again and again with how far he is ready to go with his vulgar obscenities. As a climax of Trump’s attacks on the ex-FBI lawyer Lisa Page, at a Minneapolis rally in October 2019, he performed a mock re-enactment of her texts with Mr Strzok, her ex-lover, as though the couple were in the middle of sexual act, imitating her **** throes. Lisa Page understandably exploded with rage. But the same story seems to repeat itself: Trump survives yet again what his enemies consider the final straw, which will destroy him.

Trump is the anti-Lincoln -

".............Trump's Lincoln fixation ramped up as he was preparing to run for president, repeatedly tweeting Lincoln quotes, some accurate if ironic ("A house divided against itself cannot stand") and some inaccurate but revealing ("A friend is one who has the same enemies as you have.")

During the 2016 campaign, Trump often seemed to be discovering history in real time, telling a crowd in Detroit, "a lot of people don't realize that ... the great Abraham Lincoln was a Republican."

But since reaching the presidency, Trump's comparisons to Lincoln have alternated between complaint -- "They always said ... nobody got treated worse than Lincoln -- I believe I am treated worse" -- and self-congratulation: "My Admin has done more for the Black Community than any President since Abraham Lincoln.".............

.........Trump is the anti-Lincoln -- and vice versa. Let's count just some of the ways.
Lincoln was a poor man's son, a self-made man known for his personal modesty, political moderation and moral courage.
Trump is a rich man's son, bankrolled and bailed out by his father.
Not even defenders would describe Trump as modest -- he's always been obsessed with self-promotion at the expense of substance.
In politics, Trump is the opposite of moderate. He is a demagogue who demonizes his opponents and tries to divide the country for political gain, increasingly along racial lines.

Lincoln asked Americans to rise "far above personal and partisan politics ... in this time of national peril." Trump couldn't even stop himself from making a pandemic response hyper-partisan.
When it comes to moral courage, Trump is MIA. He filters all decisions through the prism of self-interest................

Lincoln did not demonize people he disagreed with -- instead, he tried to empathize with his enemies as a means of reasoning with them. ..........

Most of all, even in the midst of a civil war, Lincoln believed that there was more that united his fellow citizens than divided them as Americans and he was guided by the Golden Rule -- treat others as you would like to be treated. That simple wisdom flowed through all his decisions. Lincoln's core asset was character.

"Of all the men I ever met," Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman said, "he seemed to possess more of the elements of greatness, combined with goodness, than any other."...........

Trump will not survive the withering assessment of history, especially when compared to past presidents. As Lincoln once said, and Trump approvingly retweeted, "once you forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and their esteem."

:)
