The Appointments - Trump's Swamp

Steve Bannon Believes The Apocalypse Is Coming And War Is Inevitable- Trump’s top adviser thinks we’re in “the great Fourth Turning in American history.”

"In Bannon’s view, we are in the midst of an existential war, and everything is a part of that conflict. Treaties must be torn up, enemies named, culture changed. Global conflagration, should it occur, would only prove the theory correct. For Bannon, the Fourth Turning has arrived. The Grey Champion, a messianic strongman figure, may have already emerged. The apocalypse is now.

“What we are witnessing,” Bannon told The Washington Post last month, “is the birth of a new political order.”....

The “aristocratic Washington class” and the media, he has claimed, are in league with the entire religion of Islam and an expansionist China to undermine Judeo-Christian America. ...

"Health and Human Services secretary nominee Tom Price showed little restraint in his personal stock trading during the three years that federal investigators were bearing down on a key House committee on which the Republican congressman served, a review of his financial disclosures shows....

The investigation was considered the first test of a law passed to ban members of Congress and their staffs from trading stock based on insider information.,,,,,

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/hhs-pick-tom-price-made-brazen-stock-trades-committee-scrutiny/

"Even without any larger context, his actions are disqualifying. He’s repeatedly placed personal enrichment above the credibility of Congress. The behavior is substantially worse than giving money to an illegal immigrant (which defeated a George W. Bush nominee) or failing to pay nanny taxes (which scuttled a Bill Clinton nominee).

But of course there is a larger context. Price has devoted much of his political career opposing expansion of health insurance. His preferred replacement of Obamacare would reduce health care benefits for sicker, poorer and older Americans....

"Trump — after railing against the corruptions of Goldman Sachs and other big banks in the campaign — has put six former Goldman Sachs bankers at the head of his economic team.

Their first priority is to roll back bank regulation, and, as Gary Cohn told the Wall Street Journal, one of their first targets is to disembowel the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

The CFPB was created in the Dodd-Frank banking reforms passed after the excesses of the banks helped blow up the economy....

The agency’s sole mission is to protect consumers against the scams and schemes of fraudulent banks and lenders. Led by Richard Cordray, a former Ohio attorney general and treasurer, it has been a stunning success, recovering nearly $12 billion for 27 million consumers from the lenders who cheated or defrauded them....

At its head, Cordray has earned widespread applause. Consumer groups hail how he’s made the CFPB transparent and responsive. Civil rights groups applaud the progress he’s forced on diversity in hiring and services.

He’s gone after lenders and others for charging people of color more for mortgages, auto loans and credit cards...

Now Cohn suggests he plans to weaken the CFPB by firing Cordray. Fire him?

Cordray has been appointed for a term that ends in 2018 and can only be fired for cause. To fire him, Cohn will have to violate that law....

The first regulation Cohn wants to reverse is the "fiduciary rule," which requires investment advisers to put client’s interests first when they deal with retirement accounts....

So what is this national medial attention going to accomplish?

Hard to say, but I would guess not much for the short-term.  Long-term, it will keep the people informed about what is happening. Whether or not that has results is the question.

Rhan Emanuel said the other day that no one should expect improvements for Democrats in 2018.  Unfortunately that is true.  There are a few Republican senators or representatives who might be replaced, but more Democrats are threatened in 2018.

If the Dems persist in resisting and the media continues to report on what is happening, something may happen in 2020.  But , they need to come up with some younger, better candidates at all levels of government and develop a plan to reach out to far more voters.

Also probable that Bannon/Trump's policies will fail, especially with the Republicans in Congress and the incompetent Trump appointees.  Then maybe, just maybe, the uneducated, ill-informed, racist, etc. people that voted for Trump will be so dissatisfied, they will stay home next election.

We generally agree here but they also need to reach out to those that did NOT vote in purple states and get them to vote.   If Dem voter turnout, especially in purple states where it matter most,  is  NOT at an all time high level in 2018,   and the Dems don't gain 20 - 30 House seats,  as well as winning state elections in those purple states, it says to me that all this 'we need to stop the GOP' talk is just empty talk.

But hey, I'm in CA and I don't know how strong the ground swell is in those purple states.    In CA Dems have super majorities and total control but my prediction is that they will lose ground since they have moved too far left in their battles against all-things-Trump.    E.g. even those that wish to allow visas for some percentage of the illegal immigrants here (dreamers,  been here 10 years,  have a college education),  don't wish for their tax dollars to be used providing legal representation to illegal immigrants or changing laws to make crimes no longer crimes since that could lead to the deportation of an illegal immigrant.    CA Dems have clearly shown they are all out for open-borders and that is too liberal even for super-blue CA.

Read something somewhere that actually Dems may pick up some House seats in CA.  I think one endangered GOPer is near San Francisco maybe or one of those San places.  (One of my favorite lines from The Odd Couple II).

But we do agree on the reaching out to people in the Purple States.

Don't expect much in 2018 as the Republicans will have lots of money and people to work on keeping the momentum going.  Add in gerrymandering and voter suppression.

Of course with Trump, Bannon and Trump's appointees there is no telling what might happen in next 12 - 18 months.

"Great News!”: White Nationalists See Sessions’ Attorney General Confirmation As Major Step Toward Achieving Their Racist Goals.......

White nationalists cheered the confirmation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, claiming that “we are one step closer to solidifying Trump’s authoritarian dictatorship,” and “we finally have an AG who will defend decent American people - rather than thugs,” and predicting that Sessions “will truly make our country great” and target “domestic terrorist groups” like Black Lives Matter.

Apparently Jared Kushner, an Orthodox Jew, has become the de facto Sec. of State in negotiating with foreign powers.  He also has a goal of establishing peace in the Middle East.  Guess that's why they appointed an ambassador offensive to Arabs and tried to move US embassy to Jeruselem.

It's unusual for an Orthodox Jew to marry a shiksa, and also for one to go to jail. (his father).

If Flynn lasts another 6 months, I'll be amazed.

Hope you are right, but remember Trump values loyalty above all.  Flynn is nothing if not loyal to Donald J. Trump.

As for the GOPers in Congress, don't expect much.  Sessions, Tillerson, DeVos, et. al. have proven they have no backbone and will not oppose Trump.

So Flynn is in charge of the nation's security and he can't even remember what he said to the Russian adversary on the telephone?

What a joke!

Trump and Bannon are in charge of national security, Flynn is merely Trump's national security advisor.

Do you still call her a shiksa after she converts?

And Jared saw to it that the very Catholic Chris Christie got kicked out of the Trump innner circle because he prosecuted Jared's dad, putting him Behind Prison Bars.

And the question is; who is Jared Kushner pledging allegiance to, the United States or Israel?

That is to say whose best interest does Jared Kushner have at heart, us Americans or some foreigners?

Senior White House Policy Advisor Stephen Miller....

“I think that it’s been an important reminder to all Americans that we have a judiciary that has taken far too much power and become in many cases a supreme branch of government,” Miller told John Dickerson of CBS News, as first noted by Will Saletan of Slate.

“The end result of this, though, is that our opponents, the media, and the whole world will soon see, as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned.”

Were they voicing their approval for those colossal presidential powers when Obama was in office?

What are the odds on Flynn being replaced?  Personally I don't see it happening as Trump picked him and he does not make mistakes.  He will find some way to blame it on the media or the Democrats.
