Racism in Trump's America

Which America Is Trump Celebrating?

The president’s patriotic pageant renews a question dating back to the first White House visit by a champion sports team.

"......... In 1867, Gorman was elected president of the National Association of Base Ball Players, one of the sport’s first governing bodies. ............ Gorman joined the effort to segregate the nation. He was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Bourbon Democrat, intent on rolling back the halting racial progress made during Reconstruction. “We have determined that this government was made by white men and shall be ruled by white men as long as the republic lasts,” ...

....The first Super Bowl champions were welcomed by Jimmy Carter in 1980, and Ronald Reagan regularized the ritual. The athletes—almost invariably more diverse in ethnicity and experience than either the White House staff or press corps hovering around them—were honored by a succession of presidents, celebrating what Americans could accomplish by working together.

At least, until now. Andrew Johnson’s latest successor in office appears determined to reverse that approach to sports. Like Chadwick, Trump insists that racial inclusivity is a political act; like Gorman, he divides and excludes even as he loudly insists that he is uniting the country; like the NABBP, he seems oblivious to those he harms.

Many of the Eagles players had reportedly decided on their own to withdraw from the visit even before Trump canceled it.  In its place, Trump ordered up a performative pageant of patriotism, with brass bands playing on the White House lawn—just as they did in August of 1865........

The slippery slope just turned to ice coated in vegetable oil. And I repeat what I said a few weeks back: not all Republicans are racist, but it sure seems that every racist runs as a Republican.

But some call themselves neo-nazis.

South Carolina restaurant 'forced man to cook without pay'

A restaurant manager in South Carolina has pleaded guilty to abusing and forcing an intellectually challenged employee to work without pay for years.

Bobby Paul Edward, who is white, violently forced the victim, who is black, to cook for long hours, the US Department of Justice said.

John Christopher Smith was made to work over 100 hours per week at the buffet and was beaten by Edwards.

He said Edwards, 53, burned him with tongs and hit him with pots and pans.

Edwards admitted to using "violence, threats, isolation and intimidation" to force Mr Smith to work, and did not allow him to see his family.

On Tuesday he pleaded guilty to one count of forced labour.

In a statement, officials added that he used "abusive language" and "racial epithets" against his employee, now aged 40.

Do not forget the racism: the proposed banning of all Muslims from America, the defense of white supremacy after Charlottesville, calling Hispanics “breeders”, Mexicans “rapists”, all majority black countries “****holes.” Mitch calls this conservatism at its best? Really, Mitch?

I wonder if Mitch is still working on that making Obama a one-term president thing?   But that wasn't race-related, was it?

https://itsgoingdown.org/antifascists-confront-patriot-prayer-and-proud-boys-in-portland-on-june-3rd/

A year after Patriot Prayer, and it’s leader Joey Gibson, brought in white-nationalist and neo-Nazi speakers for an Alt-Right rally they returned with another rally labeled as a “Free Speech” event.  This came one year after the action they held in the same location on June 4th, 2017, where almost four thousand people came out to oppose them. This charade quickly became clear when they showed up with the white-nationalist and misogynist hate-group Proud Boys and attacked journalists, one incident involving a Portland Mercury reporter being shoved and then questioned who she was reporting for.

Anti-fascist groups Rose City Antifa, Eugene Antifa, Rash NW, Pacific Northwest Anti-Fascist Workers Collective, and others organized to shut down this rally and prevent white-supremacists and those that give them a cover to organize under from marching in the streets and instilling fear in the at-risk communities that they target.

Police struggled to keep Patriot Prayer’s numbers protected which lead to panic and anger from their crowd. After several attempts by Patriot Prayer to march, all of which were prevented by the large coalition of anti-racist activists, Patriot Prayer returned back to Terry Shrunk Plaza and called it a day.

It’s so disturbing & depressing how a sitting US congressman can tweet out neo-Nazi propaganda & it’s not a national scandal & none of his colleagues are calling for him to resign.

I would say it's more disturbing that the president of the United States thinks that there are good neo-Nazis.

When Jeff Sessions cites scripture to justify tearing children from the arms of weeping parents, he reminds me of those sanctimonious slave-owners who cited the Apostle Paul to justify slavery.

Disgraceful. Do not use St. Paul to justify unjust laws and acts of cruelty. St. Paul was an apostle not of laws (we are not justified by laws, he says in Romans), but an apostle of a person: Jesus Christ. The one who said, "I was a stranger and you did not welcome me" (Mt. 25).

Sessions cites Paul on immigration policy, saying laws of government must be respected because "God has ordained them for the purpose of order." Did Paul disagree with Leviticus? "When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them."

Am I surprised that Jefferson Beauregard Sessions went right to the one Scripture passage that was the go-to passage for antebellum advocates of the slave power? No.

Racial Isolation of Charter School Students Exacerbating Resegregation

"....No one is holding charter schools responsible for the the return of Civil Right-era levels of segregation. Clearly, decades of decisions by conservative courts provided legal cover for communities to abandon desegregation efforts that were put in place following Brown v. Board of Education.

At the same time, the racial isolation in many charter schools is undeniable. Because its numbers continue to grow,  the sector is exacerbating the problem nationally.....

...If these outside organizations are allowed to develop charter schools without any restrictions, they may create a parallel system of schools that drain the resources from the traditional school systems that serve black and Latino communities, which are already underfunded,” Green explains. “This scenario of dueling school systems could create a situation in these communities that would be even worse than the infamous Plessy v. Ferguson decision.”

In short, separate but equal wasn’t possible more than 60 years ago, and it’s even less possible today......

“Segregation is the source of inequality in America. To dismiss it is to accept structural inequality and the status quo.”

Minority people don't care about their Communities and Schools.

Minority people don't care about the welfare of their family and children.

Minority people don't have feelings like other people.

Minority people act subhuman.

Since minority people act subhuman, it's okay to treat them subhuman.

No doubt racism played a role in this, but I think it was more of the evil within the employer who found an opportunity to enslave someone.  Probably would have done it to a white person if the opportunity presented itself.

Incidentally I hate headlines that are incorrect or misleading.  The restaurant didn't force anybody to do anything; the restaurant manager did.

This case has much more to do with exploitation of someone with a mental handicap than racism.

Ohio’s Junk Mail Trick Led the Supreme Court to Approve Jim Crow Voter Purge

.....It was a voter’s failure to return the postcard that cost them their right to vote. The Court majority said that the Help America Vote Act trumps the National Voter Registration Act, arguing that the act passed under George W. Bush “specifies that ‘nothing in [the National Voter Registration Act prohibition] may be construed to prohibit a State from using the procedures’ — [such as] sending a return card.”

The Justices ruled that a voter’s failure to return a postcard (which asks the voter to confirm their address) constitutes solid proof that the voter had left Ohio or moved to another voting district....

“Looks like junk mail, you’d throw it in the garbage.” ...........

Kobach’s office directs the national program to remove voters who fail to respond to a postcard, taking advantage of the nifty Help America Vote Act-shaped hole in the National Voter Registration Act.

That Kris Kobach led the way with the purge-by-postcard scheme is not surprising, given his long history of scams to disenfranchise voters of color,....
