Racism in Trump's America

“There is something so wrong with this. It is beyond disturbing," Brooke Baldwin said of Trump's attacks on black female journalists.

There is a reason why @realDonaldTrump is acting so erratic—and so angry—and so racist—and so unhinged. For the first time in his life, he’s found himself in a situation that he can’t control and it terrifies him. There is no way out and he knows it.

The U.S. Navy faces allegations that one of its ships—the USNS Trenton—ignored distress calls from a sinking migrant dinghy that capsized in the Mediterranean Sea in June, killing 76 people.

Survivors of the disaster claimed that the Trenton refused to come to their assistance until the packed migrant ship had already sunk, suggesting lives could have been saved had the Navy acted sooner.

Prosecutors on the Italian island of Sicily investigated the allegations, made in a video published by La Republica in October, The Guardian reported.

The U.S. Navy ship rescued 42 people when the dinghy sank, but survivors said the 76 deaths could have been averted. “We saw that ship, it was not far away,’’ one person said. “We saw the American flag. If they had rescued us when we were all still onboard, 76 people would not have died.”

The small boat was traveling from Libya with 117 migrants aboard, many from sub-Saharan Africa. It had been at sea for days when it began taking on water in the early hours of June 12. “The sea was rough and our boat began to fill with water,” one survivor said, “and we suddenly saw a ship; it was an American ship.”

Those aboard tried to get the Trenton’s attention for around an hour, the survivors said, but were unsuccessful. “We saw the American flag, and we tried to reach them, but as we approached, they seemed to avoid us and changed direction,” claimed one.

The Navy denied that the Trenton was close to the migrant boat before it sank.

Rescued migrants said the cruiser returned to the scene around half an hour after the dinghy capsized. “We clearly saw the same American ship that had ignored us approaching,’’ one man said. When they asked the sailors why they had not intervened before the dinghy capsized, the survivors claimed the Trenton’s crew said “it was not their job.”

“We will try to talk with the survivors of the shipwreck, to understand what happened that morning,” said prosecutor Fabio D’Anna. He stressed that a formal investigation had not yet been launched.

Hate Pays: Neo-Nazi Site Daily Stormer Has Raised Surprising Amount of Bitcoin

The Daily Stormer is a “white nationalist” blog replete with meme culture, poor grammar, and the expected, constant barrage of sexist and racist remarks. Over the years it has continually had its domains yanked, hosting revoked, and, of course, most normal funding services like PayPal refuse to allow it to do business on their platforms.

Daily Stormer Uses Bitcoin to Crowdfund Operations

As such, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies present a unique solution for the blog. Many cryptonaughts inherently eschew censorship and laud free speech, and bitcoin is by nature censorship resistant. (Note that bitcoin is not inherently anonymous, but certainly, there are a number of blockchain products which can help it to be, and there are privacy coins built on the same idea as bitcoin which aim to be by default.) The old saying, in this author’s opinion, rings especially true with a group like the Daily Stormer: popular speech needs no protection due to its popularity. It’s the unpopular, perhaps in some cases reprehensible, speech that needs to be protected.

That doesn’t mean people have to do business with hate groups, and as noted, several companies have decided not to. The site’s founder, Andrew Anglin, has opted to avoid advertising, likely more because few if any companies could survive the backlash of advertising on such a platform.

According to the donations page, Anglin and company do what they do “to preserve Western Civilization,” which includes such high-minded pursuits as Holocaust denial. And apparently, according to the Bitcoin blockchain, their efforts are far from fruitless.

Over 47 Bitcoins Received to Date

The Daily Stormer’s bitcoin wallet received its first donation in January 2017. The initial opening balance was just 0.0015 BTC. From there, they have received more than 1,100 more deposits, totaling over 47 BTC at time of writing. With an average beginning of the month (when bills are due) price of $8,950 over the past 12 months, this means they’ve probably netted somewhere in the neighborhood $420,000 over the past nearly two years. It’s hard to determine exactly what sort of realization they’ve made from the contributions, but the point is that it hasn’t been small.

Their highest balance has been just over 13.5 BTC, in February 2017, probably as they were still figuring out how to utilize the funds. At the time, the value would have been around $13,805.

These days, the address seems to spend funds pretty regularly, but small donations continue to roll in. It appears no one has told owner Andrew Anglin about the potential dangers of address reuse. Certainly, there are plenty of people who’d like to know where all these donations are coming from, and companies like Chainalysis wouldn’t have much difficulty determining such information with an address reused this many times.

BREAKING: In Florida Gov Scott's campaign has now filed a motion to seize (impound) the voting equipment in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. http://bit.ly/2OFTz2u  I suppose his last stunt--to send in state law enforcement didn't work out as expected (hint: they found no fraud).

Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith Joked About Going to a ‘Public Hanging’

So, the incumbent senator from Mississippi, who is heading into a runoff against an African-American opponent, is joking about public hangings in front of an apparently all-white crowd. In Mississippi.

When “Mississippi Burning” is the movie most closely associated with the image of your state and you don’t have the good sense not to make public hanging jokes, you’re not fit to hold public office.

Make no mistake about it, this woman is old enough to know exactly what she's talking about because she has lived through it.

And she only recently left the Democratic Party-- I wonder why she did that?

President Trump doesn't want to give Puerto Rico any more federal money for its recovery from Hurricane Maria...This is because he claims, without evidence, that the island’s government is using federal disaster relief money to pay off debt.

If anybody from Baraboo High School in Wisconsin can clue me in on

why it appears the entire male class of 2018 is throwing up a Sig Heil during their prom photos

It is so hard to find words... This is why every single day we work hard to educate. We need to explain what is the danger of hateful ideology rising.

Auschwitz with its gas chambers was at the very end of the long process of normalizing and accommodating hatred.

The prom picture story made the ABC evening news. Most of the kids questioned about it said that they didn't know it was a Nazi salute, and that they did it "because everyone else was doing it". <_<

But nearly all of the stories echo the same basic theme:

the community as a whole has a lot of casual & jokey racism, homophobia, and transphobia that is accepted as a part of life.

The school (and other schools in the area) do little to nothing to address these issues.

I can’t imagine anything like this happening in my high school.

You have got to see this.

In order to defend Cindy Hyde-Smith from accusations of racism, MI Gov. Phil Bryant doubles down by singling out black people to ask what about the "20 million abortions black people have had" and that we should be talking about that. 😳

Also, that argument that Mississippi has been "sensitive to race relations" because he brought Trump to open the Civil Rights Museum is too much...😂

Such a racist and idiotic statement doesn't deserve consideration.

The one good thing about the racist trump presidency is that it is putting a spotlight on the stupid, illogical and backward thinking of the  typical racist.

Also, I'm not going to be the one to tell this imbecile that abortion is legal in the United States and that the majority of women who have undergone the procedure are white women --

But that really has nothing to do with the current issue at hand anyway.

Jemel Roberson was the Good Guy With the Gun.

Working as a security guard, he was shot by a police officer south of Chicago after apprehending a bar patron with a firearm.

Cops arrived, and assumed that he was the perp. Shot him dead. Roberson was 26.

"They basically saw a black man with a gun:"

People believing in negative stereotypes is what racism is all about.

Do you think we should all get together and chip in to give Cindy a DVD of
