Trump vs. the Press/Media

Dozens of new websites "appear to be Michigan local news outlets," but are full of conservative political content,

reports.

The issue is the trickery – making the sites seem like local papers, with similar names, etc,

says

Watch your URL: Local news outlets have to ward off more politically-funded local competitors ahead of 2020

A local journalist has uncovered a network of dozens of masquerading local news sites pushed by a conservative consultant — and it’s not the first time.

As local news becomes less profitable as a commercial business (and re-spun as more of a public good) but still retains high levels of trust, some political players see its situation as an opportunity.

Among them has been a series of conservative news sites with opaque funding that focus almost entirely on portraying governments as wasteful and corrupt. .......

Politico and Snopes uncovered a network of sites in key 2020 states (The Ohio Star, The Minnesota Sun, The Tennessee Star) created by Republican consultants

and mislabeling people paid to elect a GOP candidate as “investigative journalists” who were now covering them.

In all of these cases, the issue is less about politicians promoting their points of view than hiding their affiliation with the content —

for folks who think the gop is executing some grand plan: they aren't. this is the point of all these things, from gaetz, from trump, etc. its just to feed the fox news beast, which gets their base all het up, and prompts votes and money.

The White House Trump statement telling the entire Federal Government to terminate subscriptions to the NYT and Wash Post is a watershed moment in national history. No room for HUMOROUS media coverage. This is deadly serious. This is Mussolini.

WGAE Council member Michael Winship and Bill Moyers took out a full-page ad in today's New York Times urging

to broadcast the hearings live and rerun them in primetime, as was done back in 1973 for the Watergate testimony.

================================================

A Message to PBS: Televise the Trump Impeachment Hearings for All to See

Why we took out that ad in The New York Times.

by

"....The Watergate committee coverage, MacNeil noted, was “a kind of extended morality play.” Columbia University’s David M. Stone wrote in his book, Nixon and the Politics of Public Television, “Had Watergate never come to light, the Nixon White House would likely have succeeded in muzzling public television as it might have succeeded in muzzling all its opponents.”

When PBS takes a stand, it can make a difference.......

GOOD INFO ARTICLE..... :)

Social media is amplifying Trump’s rants and disinformation more than ever-

As 2020 approaches, a look at disinformation trends, who’s susceptible, and the Democratic Party’s countermeasures

"........ The Trump campaign’s common thread is not just to create doubts about Democrats and to demonize critics, but also to reinforce tribal lines. Trump is defending white America against the “undeserving outsiders and the Democrats who represent them,” .....

“If you imagine a scenario where both sides decide to weaponize targeting certain kinds of people with fear-based messaging — and they know who to go for — this will cycle out of control,” she said. “We are all being made fearful of each other. There’s no way on earth that we can handle this, psychologically, and deal with the important issues, like climate change, when we are being turned against each other.”

But that is what disinformation is designed to do. And all signs suggest that there will be more of it than ever in 2020 as the presidential election, congressional elections, state races and impeachment proceed......

WATCH: Chris Wallace slaps down Fox host for repeating GOP talking point on Ukraine

........Wallace said. “He talked about one point — remember he is the acting ambassador in Ukraine — he talked about at one point standing on a hill looking across a bridge at Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine and bemoaning the fact that with the holdup of this military aid, as he put it, more Ukrainians are going to die.”

“One of the arguments they’re going to make is Ukraine is the front line in the encroachment by the Russians,” Wallace continued. “And when the President decided to pull this military aid, he weakened Ukraine and its ability to lead that fight and stand off against the Russians.”.......

".... I decided to mute all my other TVs and just watch Fox News on Wednesday night

I heard Stephanie Grisham say that "today was a joke." I heard Donald Trump Jr. say "it's insanity." I heard Jeff Sessions ask, "Where's the beef?"

Here's what else I heard: Wednesday's hearing was a bust. It was all just hearsay. It was a "disaster" for the Democrats and a "great day" for the Republicans. Impeachment is "stupid." Impeachment is "fake." There's nothing impeachable here. There's no reason to hold hearings. This inquiry needs to stop right now.

The message was one-sided and overwhelming. Every host and practically every guest said the Republican tribe is winning and the Democrat tribe is losing. I'm sure the president loved watching every minute of it. .....

Media filters set current impeachment hearings apart

"Millions of Americans are choosing to experience the impeachment hearings through media filters that depict the proceedings as either a worthless sham or like Christmas in November.

That’s the chief difference between now and the two other times in the modern era when a presidential impeachment was explored, and will likely be a major factor in determining whether the hearings change anyone’s minds about President Donald Trump....

about 6 in 10 Americans say they regularly see conflicting reports about the same set of facts from different sources. Nearly half of Americans say that it’s difficult to know if they information they see is true. .......

".....FNC won the viewership wars for yesterday’s very partisan hearing with 2.9 million viewers. The outlet was number two in the key news demo of adults 25-54 with an average of 442,000 to ABC’s 496,000 – though it should be noted that the Disney-owned network started things a little earlier at 9:50 AM.

In total audience, MSNBC had 2.7 million viewers, ABC had 2 million and CBS was close behind with 1.9 million. CNN was in fourth place with 1.85 million and NBC was last among the major news players with 1.7 million –

Soledad O’Brien

Soledad O'Brien sounds off to Lloyd Grove about why the cable news media’s been such an embarrassment during the Trump era.

“What drives me more nutty than the president—who I think is obviously a terrible human being in a lot of ways—is the way in which the media does not know how to handle him,” she said.

“Quoting people who are saying lies is a really bad strategy. When President Trump says the moon is made of cheese, well, it’s not,” she continued, speaking metaphorically.

“What drives me really crazy is to see all the mistakes the media makes around [the problem of], how do you report on somebody who’s a liar, who won’t hold press conferences in a place where you can ask real questions?”

“The idea of something being ‘racially charged’ or ‘racially tinged’—what the **** is that? Journalists will bend over and literally do gymnastics to avoid calling someone a racist. Or ‘verifiably untrue.

’ It’s just a lie! What is wrong with you? That actually drives me insane. It’s just a failure of journalism.” ..........

Her targets include her former employer CNN, especially politics reporter and editor-at-large Chris Cillizza; NBC News’ Chuck Todd, the moderator of Meet the Press—whom she compares unfavorably to Fox News’ Chris Wallace—and MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

Republicans Urge Americans to Follow Them Through the Fox News Looking Glass on Ukraine

" Americans who do not get all of their information about Ukraine from Fox News or right-wing Twitter and Facebook feeds have no doubt been baffled by the Republican cross-examination of witnesses called to give public testimony in the House impeachment hearings. ........

There have been frequent, context-free references to something called “the black ledger,” invocations of the supposedly nefarious role of George Soros in supporting Ukrainian anti-corruption activists, and even suggestions that Donald Trump’s former campaign chair, Paul Manafort, who is serving seven and a half years in federal prison for financial crimes stemming from his work in Ukraine, might have been framed.

The resulting spectacle has confused viewers unfamiliar with a series of conspiratorial reports about Ukraine from the conservative columnist John Solomon, whose work has been promoted relentlessly on Fox, and caused many to simply tune the proceedings out.

Virginia Tilley, a political scientist at Southern Illinois University, suggested on Twitter that making the impeachment hearings nearly unwatchable might even be the Republican strategy....

"Scariest thing about our national crisis: lying GOP has made even impeachment hearing so repellent that few can bear to listen. They win by just **** us with inane babble, demoralizing the principled with shrieking stupidities.

Is this how democracy dies? Through BS fatigue? "

.......... Behind all these lies there is an ugly truth. Under the guise of fighting corruption, the Trump administration and its Republican allies have thrown the full force of the United States government, and Fox News, into supporting a counter-revolution in Ukraine,

siding with corrupt oligarchs and former officials there who aim to discredit and suppress the reformers and anti-corruption activists ......."

They flood the world of information with garbage and lies masquerading as news. … There’s a phrase for that." ......

To Fox News Channel: Please, more of this. Have @realDonaldTrump

Maybe even have loyal #MAGA viewers call in and ask him questions.

President 'Fox News Grandpa' Had Himself a Morning on Fox & Friends

The world's most powerful man called into a TV show to rant about a server in Ukraine, a haunting demonstration of his inability to process what constitutes observable reality.

"....... There is a man who appears to be in cognitive decline, who does not read and who gets all of his information from the TV screen—he admitted here that he watched Fox News for five hours (!) yesterday—in charge of the country.

He seems legitimately unable to parse what is true and what is false, because it does not occur to him that it would matter.

All information is judged on a single criterion: Is it good for me, or is it bad for me? Do they like me, or do they not like me? This is insanity.

The contours of reality cannot be bent forever to prop up one loud grandpa's fragile self-conception. Eventually the bend will become a break, and it's all of us—the whole nation—who will fall into the void. "

"........... was that 'pushback' from two of the Couch Geniuses, Brian Kilmeade and Steve Doocy?

Did they just DARE ask the world's most powerful man if the nutso conspiracy theory that is percolating in his mushy brain is...real? .........

.... Sure, they gave him close to an hour to rant and rave about his various intergalactic resentments and rage-theories,

but they DID question whether the DNC sent a server to Ukraine,.....
