Trump vs. the Press/Media

LA Times Editorial: President Trump should be impeached-

Editorial: We’ve seen enough. Trump should be impeached

".........We worried that impeaching Trump on essentially a party-line vote would be divisive. It is also highly likely that Trump would be — will be — acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate, and that, rightly or wrongly, he would point to that in his reelection campaign as exoneration.

But those concerns must yield to the overwhelming evidence that Trump perverted U.S. foreign policy for his own political gain. That sort of misconduct is outrageous and corrosive of democracy. It can’t be ignored by the House, and it merits a full trial by the Senate on whether to remove him from office.......

It’s obvious that at least one article should cite Trump’s improper approaches to Ukraine, whether they are described as “bribery” (an offense specifically mentioned in the Constitution’s impeachment clause) or abuse of power. A separate article would be warranted for his outrageous efforts to obstruct Congress by keeping information from the impeachment inquiry.

Finally, we continue to believe that the House should consider an article of impeachment addressing the actions Trump took to thwart or hobble special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation........

Holding the president accountable for gross abuse of power is the business of Congress. The House should get on with that business by writing articles of impeachment that make it clear to the Senate — and the American people — why the extraordinary remedy of impeachment is necessary. And Republicans who complain that the process is partisan could easily rectify that situation by abandoning their lockstep loyalty to Trump and looking at the facts. "

At Glitzy GOP Fundraiser,

Devin Nunes Dodges Questions About Contact With Lev Parnas & has reporter ousted-

........ After The Intercept approached Nunes about his contacts with Parnas and whether he was involved with the effort to pressure the Ukrainian government, the California lawmaker sped off, walking through the Palace Hotel to the hotel’s lounge.

Moments later, he returned with a cell phone, pointed at this reporter. He remained quiet while asked again about his calls.

Nunes then conferred with a U.S. Capitol Police officer stationed at the event, who had The Intercept removed from the hotel. ....

Sinclair Broadcast Group drops Boris Epshteyn's “must-run” segments

".........For over two years, Epshteyn’s “must-run” commentaries propagandizing for the Trump administration aired on Sinclair local news stations around the country. He will now purportedly be “moving into a sales-focused role with the company,” a source told NBC.

After serving as a Trump aide, Epshteyn was hired by Sinclair as its chief political analyst. He predictably used the platform to defend administration policies, deflect from offensive comments by the president, and air softball interviews with Trump administration officials and other Republicans. While local news stations were forced to air Epshteyn’s segments, there was no natural audience for his commentary; a Media Matters review of his Sinclair commentary clips posted to YouTube found they typically received less than 50 views.

Here are a few selections from Epshteyn’s commentaries:.........

Fox News Is Now a Threat to National Security

The network’s furthering of lies from foreign adversaries and flagrant disregard for the truth have gotten downright dangerous.

"....... It’s worse than lunacy, though. Fox’s bubble reality creates a situation where it’s impossible to have the conversations and debate necessary to function as a democracy. Facts that are inconvenient to President Trump simply disappear down Fox News’ “memory hole,” as thoroughly as George Orwell could have imagined in 1984. ...

The threat posed to our democracy by Fox News is multifaceted:

First and most simply, it’s clearly advancing and giving voice to narratives and smears backed and imagined by our foreign adversaries.

Second, its overheated and bombastic rhetoric is undermining America’s foundational ideals and the sense of fair play in politics.

Third, its unique combination of lies and half-truths has built a virtual reality so complete that it leaves its viewers too misinformed to fulfill their most basic responsibilities as citizens to make informed choices about the direction of the country. .......

Fox’s clear willingness to parry the wingnuttiest ideas in service of the president, long-term implications to the United States be damned, should worry all concerned about the state of the United States. The Ukraine myth is hardly the only example; ..........

as the year has unfolded, Fox’s evening talk shows and its presidentially endorsed morning show have proven to be a particularly egregious and odious swamp of fetid, metastasizing lies and bad faith feedback loops that leave its viewers—and, notably, its Presidential Audience of One—foaming at the mouth with outrage .........

Fox News’ own masters of Orwellian doublespeak, its Hannitys, Carlsons, and Doocys, the ones who smugly declare down up and up down, aren’t even bothering to tell their viewers to ignore their eyes and ears, because the truth never even approaches their airtime.

Let’s hope that Fox News today, unlike in Orwell’s world, doesn’t manage to succeed in transforming our country from a functional democracy into an authoritarian cult. "

Internet flabbergasted after NBC’s

Chuck Todd named ‘Media personality of the year’:

‘Is this a joke? Serious question’

...... while calling his Meet the Press the “gold standard” was met with derision and laughter on the internet which has long hammered the NBC host for his failures to push back at guests making ridiculous assertions as well as his habit of not asking follow-up questions. ....

Spot-on,

: "In an unceasing effort to be seen as neutral, journalists time after time fell into the trap of presenting facts and lies as roughly equivalent

and then blaming political tribalism for not seeming to know the difference."

===================================

The two big flaws of the media’s impeachment coverage — and what went right

.........Their test was to cover the impeachment proceedings without getting mired in the usual traps:

false equivalence; distraction by presidential stunt; rampant speculation; the use of squishy language; and what I called Barr-Letter Syndrome, a reference to the way the mainstream press allowed Attorney General William P. Barr last spring to mischaracterize the findings of the Mueller report.

Now that Trump has been impeached, it’s not possible to say that the mainstream media has earned anything close to an A.

The Christmas Eve Confessions of Chuck Todd

That disinformation was going to overtake Republican politics was discoverable years before he says he discovered it.

"....... Chuck Todd has essentially said that on the right there is an incentive structure that compels Republican office holders to use their time on Meet the Press for the spread of disinformation. So do you keep inviting them on air to do just that? If so, then you break faith with the audience and create a massive problem in real time fact-checking. If not, then you just broke the show in half.

There is simply nothing in the playbook at Meet the Press that tells the producers what to do in this situation. As I have tried to show, they didn’t arrive here through acts of naiveté,

but by willful blindness, malpractice among the experts in charge, an insider’s mentality, a listening breakdown, a failure of imagination,

and sheer disbelief that the world could have changed so much upon people paid so well to understand it."

Also mainstream media outlets frequently book guests who lie, intentionally, on their air.

CNN is one such outlet. Instead of shunning those guests they are booked again and again and again.

When CNN’s media reporter pretends his own news org isn’t part of this BS, it’s a problem

Searching for truth in an era of 'alternative facts': Disinformation in the age of Trump

On a special edition of "Meet the Press," top journalists discuss the challenges of finding the facts amid growing disinformation.

"We live in an environment where people are able to spread crazy conspiracy theories and absolute falsehoods and lies," Baron said. "And that's made possible by the internet and social media. And people are drawn to sources of information, so-called information, that confirms their pre-existing points of view. And you know, that's what's contributing to this environment that we have today." .............

"if you want to propel your lie, just keep issuing falsehoods. The truth has one voice, but lies are infinite. You can continue to make more and more lies, which then wears out anybody trying to rebut them.” ...........

trump's hatred of the Constitution's 1st Amendment  and American journalists is simply his desire that the American people not know what is really going on in his administration.

He figures you have to accept his lies if no one tells you the truth.

It didn't work for Johnson and Vietnam--

It didn't work for Nixon and Watergate-

And it won't work for trump.

trump has no credibility with the American people--

even if he's the last person to know that.

The coda to @NPRKelly's interview with @SecPompeo is shocking. As described on @npratc: He screamed, swore at her, and said she couldn't find Ukraine on a map. He ordered staffers to bring a blank map. She pointed to Ukraine and thanked him for his time.
