Trump vs. the Press/Media

I have to give credit to and

for how much they’ve improved their handling of live Trump events.

In 2016, Trump’s rallies were often aired in full without fact-checking.

Now, we either get fact-checking chyrons or they cut away entirely.

Bravo. #TrumpPressConference

Why are networks STILL throwing away all the $$$ they should be getting from Trump campaign for ad time????

ABC reporter doubles down after calling Trump a liar to his face: ‘There’s no other way to put it’

........“Why did you lie to the American people and why should we trust what you say now?” Karl asked the president, who responded by calling the reporter a “disgrace.”

“I’ve resisted using that word for five years of covering Donald Trump, as a candidate and as president,” Jonathan Karl explained. “But I went in there feeling that there was no other way to put it.”

According to the ABC reporter, audio tapes recorded by journalist Bob Woodward make it clear “that the president knew what the truth was and, in fact, explained to Woodward his reason for not telling the truth.”

“That is by definition a lie,” Karl observed. “So, I just felt I needed to ask the question as directly and plainly as possible.”.......

Russian operation masqueraded as right-wing news site

The latest operation centered around a pseudo media organization called the Newsroom for American and European Based Citizens.

"........

A network of accounts posing as editors and journalists then promoted the articles on social media sites favored by right-wing users.

Topics covered by NAEBC ranged from attacks on Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden to criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement and praise for Wisconsin shooter Kyle Rittenhouse.........

Trump calls in for rambling and ugly post-hospital interview-

..........He suggested he could have contracted the virus from a reception he held for Gold Star families at the White House last Sunday instead of the mask-less ceremony announcing his Supreme Court nominee, which has produced several cases...........

And he lobbed accusations against Sen. Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, that edged into the realm of Joseph McCarthy.

"She's a communist. She's not a socialist, she's well beyond a socialist," he said, going on to make false, fear-mongering claims that Harris wants to "open up the borders to allow killers and murderers and rapists to pour into our country."
He twice called Harris, the first woman of color on a major party ticket, a "monster."

The appearance shoved aside any coverage of Wednesday evening's vice presidential debate. And it seemed to solidify the impression of a candidate in deep distress about the state of his campaign...........

Trump portrayed himself a picture of health, even though he is the candidate who last week struggled to breathe and required supplemental oxygen.
"I'm back because I am a perfect physical specimen and I'm extremely young. And so I'm lucky in that way," Trump said. Trump, at 74, is clinically obese and has known heart issues.
"I could've been out of the hospital in one day," he added, attributing his recovery to the experimental monoclonal antibody therapy produced by Regeneron.

Left unanswered were the many open questions about Trump's condition.........

'Craven Ratings Stunt:' NBC Rebuked for Booking Trump Town Hall Opposite Biden's on Rival ABC

Calls for #NBCblackout on Thursday night after network accused of "caving to the Trumpian impulses the network helped hone."

".......As the Daily Beast reported, critics and employees at the network—the longtime home of Trump's reality shows, "The Apprentice" and "Celebrity Apprentice"—say the president will likely bring high ratings to the network as Americans tune in to watch the spectacle of Trump answering questions and spreading misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic and other issues.

"This decision is not just journalistically incorrect, but morally incorrect," said television writer Nell Scovell.

............"President Trump refused to participate in the virtual debate scheduled for Thursday night by the Presidential Debate Commission," the letter reads. "By agreeing to air his town hall as counter-programming opposite Vice President Biden's town hall on ABC, you are enabling the president's bad behavior while undercutting the Presidential Debate Commission and doing a disservice to the American public. We believe this kind of indifference to the norms and rules of our democracy are what have brought our country to this perilous state.".........

Why the media is still struggling with how to cover Trump

".........

— the difficulty of the media in dealing what I call with bothsiderism. If one person is saying something that's true, and somebody else is saying something that's simply beyond the realm of reality, like that the U.S. is doing fine with the pandemic, et cetera, it is difficult for the media to try to have our standard pose of centrism while having these two conflicting views.

I think more of the media have been trying on this second front to deal with bothsiderism than have been trying to resist the spectacle of Donald Trump. So I think it is an evolutionary process.

But, basically, I think Donald Trump has played the media more than the media have been aware of being played........

at the same time as Trump is saying that he wants Amy Coney Barrett confirmed so she can weigh in on the election if it goes to the Supreme Court, that the media is spending a lot more time asking Biden about court packing.

And those things aren't equal. They're really different issues and really different from erosions of democracy. And when we play into that, when we sort of push to balance, just because we don't know another way to seem objective, we're doing a disservice to the audience..........

most journalists could assume that most politicians would try to avoid saying things that were provably untrue.

As we move into different terrain where those norms don't apply in the same way, I think there's a new movement that is necessarily under way in journalism to say, our two loyalties should be to the process of democracy, democracy, small-D democracy, and to observable truth.

And, sometimes, this puts us in a difficult position of saying we think this side is saying something that is true, and this side is not. But our larger, longer-term loyalty is — should be to democracy and to the truth, as we can best determine it.......

when you see that you're being played or manipulated, it's time to change the playbook and adjust to what's happening. And, to some degree, I think what Donald Trump really took advantage of in 2016 is that political journalism had become very akin to entertainment and had become very sports-like. People just constantly talked about who was up and who was down.

And if we just continue in that same pattern, we're going to just continue to have elections where people aren't getting good information,............

the main thing that the public can do is similar to what we in the media can do, which is to try to

avoid just the distraction of the spectacle minute by minute by minute, that, if we find ourselves, as citizens or as reporters, being in the mode of a cat chasing a laser dot, we're —

it's exciting in that instant, but we're not deciding about the things that matter in the long term......."

Glenn Greenwald resigns from The Intercept

"....... Greenwald accused Intercept editors in New York of becoming "increasingly authoritarian" and "repressive.".......

Intercept responds" "......the preposterous charge that The Intercept’s editors and reporters, with the lone, noble exception of Glenn Greenwald, have betrayed our mission to engage in fearless investigative journalism because we have been seduced by the lure of a Joe Biden presidency. A brief glance at the stories The Intercept has published on Biden will suffice to refute those claims," it continues. .....

As Trump Is Defeated, the Murdochs Try to Dodge Backlash for Fox News

The Murdoch family, owners of Fox News, oversaw a pivot against President Trump as his defeat loomed.

".........their media holdings — not just Fox News — began sending out clear signals to President Trump that he should accept defeat. On Friday evening, the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page skeptically noted that the Trump campaign “will have to prove” its baseless claims of election fraud, and advised the president to be ready to “concede gracefully.” The article’s headline was “The Presidential Endgame.” On Fox News last night, primetime host Laura Ingraham, a guest at the White House just a few days ago, said the president should exhibit “grace and composure”..........

Trump Appointee Unconstitutionally Interfered With VOA, Judge Rules

..........The chief executive over the Voice of America and its sister networks has acted unconstitutionally in investigating what he claimed was a deep-seated bias against President Trump by his own journalists, a federal judge has ruled.

Citing the journalists' First Amendment protections, U.S. Judge Beryl Howell on Friday evening ordered U.S. Agency for Global Media CEO Michael Pack to stop interfering in the news service's news coverage and editorial personnel matters. She struck a deep blow at Pack's authority to continue to force the news agency to cover the president more sympathetically.

Actions by Pack and his aides have likely "violated and continue to violate [journalists'] First Amendment rights because, among other unconstitutional effects, they result in self-censorship and the chilling of First Amendment expression,".......

.....Trump nominated Pack to be chief executive of the U.S. Agency for Global Media more than two years ago, and the U.S. Senate finally confirmed him in June.

Pack has since turned the agency upside down, firing and suspending top executives, reassigning Voice of America's top standards executive and initiating investigations of journalists for individual stories about the political campaign between Trump and Joe Biden, now the president-elect. Several contractors were dismissed; an editor was suspended. ..........

VOA and its sister networks — which include Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, the Middle East Broadcasting Networks and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting — reach more than 350 million people overseas each week.

Their aim is to present rigorous news coverage in countries that do not have robust news organizations or that crack down on a free press. They are also supposed to embody American values by modeling what a free press looks like............

On Friday, Howell pointed to those laws in ruling Pack's actions were unconstitutional. .......
