Bogie56
Fans of Anna Magnani may wish to think about travelling to Toronto this winter/spring for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see many of her films on the big screen with subtitles and recently restored prints. The Magnani series commences at Toronto's Lightbox Theatres on January 27 and runs until March 11. Why is this event so rare? Many of the films that will be screened have English subtitles prints but sadly there are no subtitled dvd copies of the same films making it unlikely they will ever show up on English television. So see them on the big screen or not at all. Here is the line-up. Rome Open City (1945) Jan 27 and Feb 3 Mamma Roma (1962) Jan 28 The Passionate Thief (1960) Jan 29 Bellissima (1951) and Anna Magnani, a vignette from the anthology film We the Women (1953) Feb 3 Down With Misery (1945) Feb 4 The Peddler and the Lady (1943) Feb 5 Wild Is the Wind (1957) Feb 7 The Rose Tattoo (1955) Feb 9 The Fugitive Kind (1960) Feb 12 L'Amore (1948) and The Bandit (1946) Feb 14 Angelina (1947) Feb 16 Teresa Venerdi (1941) Feb 23 Fellini's Roma (1972) Feb 24 The Golden Coach (1952) Feb 25 Volcano (1950) Feb 28 Peddlin' In Society (1946) Feb 26 La Sciantosa (1971) Mar 2 The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969) Mar 3 ...And the Wild Women (1959) Mar 5 Full Speed (1934) Mar 7 1870 (1972) Mar 10 Life Is Beautiful (1943) and Women Trouble (1948) Mar 11
LornaHansonForbes
I've only seen a small handful of Magnani's movies, but anyone who wants to call her The Greatest Actress of All Time has some pretty solid ground on which to build their case. Bogie56
I've only just heard of a relatively 'new' Magnani film called The War of the Volcanos (2012) by Francesco Patierno. It is a documentary featuring Magnani AND Ingrid Bergman and is the story of Magnani gong ape when she learns that her beau Rossellini is making a movie with Ingrid Bergman - Stromboili (1950) - set in the volcanic Aeolian Islands. Magnani retaliated by setting up her own production, Volcano (1950). Looks fascinating. Let the fireworks begin!
