michele31415
This is a movie that was on TCM last year but for the life of me I can't remember the name. It's about an an actor with a giant ego playing in an outdoor summer stock theatre somewhere in the midwest. The plot is vaguely like "Enter Laughing" but that's not it. A local teenager is a theatre nut and gets a job as a stagehand hoping to land a role in a production. The star (who reminds me of Howard Keel but I don't think that's him) takes the kid under his wing while he waits for his big break, hoping an agent from New York will see him and sign him up. Meanwhile the stagehands play pranks on him like gluing a mug he's supposed to lift to the table. It was very funny - but what's it called? This is really vexing me. Thanks! I believe you hit on it in your question; it's Summer Stock (1950) starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. It's set in New England, rather than the Midwest, but otherwise this sounds like the film you're looking for.
Azure
Michele31415, I think that it might be Those Lips, Those Eyes (1980).
BelleLeGrand1
Michele31415, I think that it might be Those Lips, Those Eyes (1980). I do believe you've done it again, Azure. Well done. The synopsis at imdb fits like a glove, down to the pranks. Think I'll retire from playing for awhile.

Azure
You're welcome, michelle31415. BelleLeGrand1 -- Thanks for your nice words. It would be a shame to see you "retire" because you've been very helpful on the information board. Please stick around!

If there's a board I won't leave at TCM, it's this one (that's why I winked) as I do love a challenge. Now, Off Topic Chit-Chat's another matter entirely!
